Federal 50gr JHP 22 Magnum Ammo Accuracy Test

  • I've tested many different types of 22 magnum ammunition from Hornady, Armscor, CCI and Winchester, but I find the Federal 50gr JHP the best fit for my Ruger American Rimfire Rifle. As far as 22WMR is concerned, it has decent knockdown and is capable of under 1" 5-shot groups @ 100 yards in good conditions.

If you multiple the bullet Mass by its impact velocity,it gives you the actual knock down effect. You can use bullet weight in grains instead of mass and still compare bullet effects. This derives from rifle mass times recoil energy equals bullet mass times bullet energy. It's possible to have identical rifle weights with bullets of identical muzzle energy, but the heavier bullet will always produce more recoil energy, so the rifle is recoiling faster. This "bullet effect" also happens with a heavier bullet. In fact a very heavy bullet can have much less energy than a lighter higher energy bullet and it will still have more "bullet effect"! That 50 grain 22 wmr by Federal is absolutely the best ammunition for foxes and, as you said, it's so much quieter! Nice video.

Great ammo review! I have not tried these yet, I normally shoot 40 gr. JHP, mostly CCI flavors. I shoot a Savage mod. 93 BTVS with a Vortex Crossfire II 6 -18 x44 AO scope. This rifle/scope combo is extremely accurate, especially out to 100 plus yards. The main use is varmint/target shooting, and the real kicker is the price point - value & performance! Really enjoy your rimfire content! Keep up the good work!

Your rifle throws hot barrel shots to left windage. Because in a hunting scenario your shot will generally be from a cold barrel, take your time when sighting in for your scope.

Excellent review, I'm a big Ruger fanboy and I have 10 Ruger American rifle's and I have a number of Henry lever action rifle's. I use almost all federal ammo and I love it. I also have two Ruger American rifle's in 22 hornet and 17 hornet, I took a hundred and 50lb hog with the 22 hornet and I've taken a lot of coyote's with all 3 round's plus a 17hmr out of my Henry 17hmr express. I don't know if you can get Henry lever action rifle's over their, I've only seen the Adler lever action. I know you have lost a lot of your gun right's over the year's by your woke government, but are you aloud to carry revolver's. I love my Ruger revolver's and I always carry at least 2 if not 3. I'm in a wheelchair and like to be able to defend myself and hunt with my revolver's. What the woke government both in Australia and here in America is they are a deterrent against other countries. When I was an oxymoron ( military intelligence ) the biggest threat to the USSR was that so many American's have gun's. The same would be for you against China. I love your channel and I also watch Sky News. Have a great day! Sincerely Ruger Rich

@@glennllewellyn7369 that's still pretty good. But our WOKE government want's to put limit's on stuff, but our Supreme Court is working on a big gun right's bill and so far it look's very good for us. God Bless everyone from Australia, both of my grandparent's were either born their or England, but they spent a lot of year's in Australia. They both died year's before I was born and I never got the full story. My son did a family tree but to many gap's. OK mate be safe and God Bless!

I have the same rifle in the compact. It shoots about like your’s. 2 years ago I bought 5 boxes of different 22 wmr to test. Then we move to the country. I can’t find them. One of the boxes was the Fed 50gr. My kids will probably find them after I die. 🤷‍♂️

I recently purchased bottle of this stuff for my Savage Precision B22 and it likes it. I achieved the same results at 50, if not better in some instances. I have no intent of stretching it out to 100 yds as I think the ammo is too heavy.

Yip the federal 50 grainers have more impact energy times bullet weight at all ranges useful to the hunter. Great stoppers.

Thanks for the video. found my Savage 93f shot the Federal 50 grain bulk very good, but wanted something a little more for target shooting so got a Savage 93 FVSS and got a few containers of the Federal 50 grain. Had it out to sight in the scope, starting at 35 yards, did not do to good, the 93 F shot a lot titer groups. The FVSS would shoot 3 out of 5 less than 1/2" but the other 2 would be 1 to 1 1/2" not good for 35 yards, shot 5; 5 round groups and all the same. Not sure if it is the rifle or the scope. Was thinking of betting a Boyds stock the same as came on my Savage Mark II TR but now wondering if it is worth it, or will it help tighten up the groups. This is the first Savage I had that did not shoot great right out of the box. Going to try remounting the scope and see what happens, the scope was put on by a store where I got it so should be done right.

Great review Ozzie and a great price you scored on the ammo also. I take it that you have set your rifle up with this ammo looking at those groups to be one inch high at 50 yards and it lands about one inch low at 100 yards? Thanks for sharing!

Might have to try them in my Ruger 77. I'm considering changing to 50gr's as a couple of rams I was putting down for dog food seemed to shrug off 40gr's to the sweede at point blank range. Had to finish them off with the knife.

I've watched alot of your 22 wmr videos now. I think your groups are suffering from poor bedding and a squishy stock. Those flyers are often from bedding issues and the stock on these is recycled milk jugs at best. I'm considering dropping the $170 on a Boyd's laminate stock for mine.
