11:55 that is a great shot! Nice story to tell over a pint. Cool video this, at the Rydges staring at the sky tower so TH-cam’d how it got built. Thanks for the documentation!
Just stumbled across your video's by luck, started at 3 of 3 and worked back, thank you for having a forethought back then to record this, absolutely awesome !
Awesum video, i moved to auckland from wellington back in about early 1996, we had a mean view if the tower from our house in howick, i use to always look at our window at night & see the tower in the distance, made me feel like i was somewhere important because there was nothing like this back in wellington, still an amazing looking building & will always remind me of the years i spent living in auckland, must have been an awesum project to be involved with 👍
Neat alright. Crak up too. Good way of looking at the sky tower. Tu much for the hard mahi u all put down for Aotearoa Tāmaki Makaurau. Solid. Jah bless.
@@fantaaahhThey fell.. They were on the scaffold high up.. 👀 In the year 2000 I was living in the city 🏙 with a guy Gary, who said he was the crane driver when it was being built.. He told me he was the crane operator and he swung the crane around too quickly, knocked the guys off the scaffold, and because of counterweights and swinging around too fast or some shit, he broke the crane in half, and said he jumped 6 floors from the falling crane, onto the top of another building..🏢 And because we happened to be living on the 6th floor of a 7 story building in Wakefield street in the CBD, I said to him Wtf Gary.. You're telling me you jumped from here, to down there.? (pointing to the road)..You'd be dead, or have broken bones etc.? And he told me Nah, He just had the mad pins n needles, and was walking with stiff legs to the ambulance with the Paramedics 🚑 And he was showing me how his skin around his shoulders were all discolored, and said the discoloration was cancer.. That's what he reckoned killing those workers had done to him.. given him cancer from stress.. And as crazy, and unbelievable his shit sounded to me at the time.. I know, that the previous year, I was looking at the NZ Herald 📰 👀.. And on the front page, there was a large pic, of a crane, that had been snapped in half, and the upper half of the crane was straddled across the top of the next building over.. 📰 😲
Forgive me for the noob question but, how does the crane operator get up and down at the start/end of the day?? Does he just climb up and down?? Remote control??
Awesome that there's not even a fence seperating the site from the public where the crane cab's being lowered directly onto the road. not a roadcone in site! we've devolved a long way in 30ish years..
Incase you don't know the IMAX abd everything that was there is now abandoned now all shops resteraunts are all gone now the entire IMAX building has been closed down since a few yrs ago now when everyone goes to see it after all these yrs will be sad to see darkness and no shops or anything inside the building since few yrs ago I don't think anyone buying it up owell proces there sucked anyway probably why nobody went there price hikes and covid killed IMAX completely now days all u see is empty you will be shocked to see what it looks like in 2024
Kind of sad that the CBD looks exactly the same as it did in 1997. It's like they just the council/govt stopped giving a fuck and let everything age. But back in its day, Auckland was truly a modern city.
My brother and cuzzon was working on the IMAX the same yr that fella fell off the IMAX because somebody didn't stabilize the platform my brother and cuzzon were on one other platforms on the other side when that fella lost his footing and fell through the platform to the ground well smashing into everything else before he met his death on the ground bellow my brother came home work was stopped for a week for CSI guys investigations but we at home already saw the news not long after accident happened
Nice to see no high vis or hard hat needed when you are the man at the top. The good old times before H&S ruined everything and started the decline of common sense not being so common.
Invaluable footage of a key part of NZ history. Thanks for the upload
You're welcome mate!
You guys are bloody BRAVE. Respect! !!

My palms got sweaty once you boys got in the yellow taxi. Faaaaaaaa!!!
Hahaha!
A guy I worked with lost his mind running conduit in the basement car parks.
Past on from the stress.
Nice TH-cam recommendation in August 2021
I remember being a young teen and looking at that crane thinking ' fck that' 😁..too high for me bro.
No Hi Viz back in the day!
Yea.... much stricter these day eh!
There more cones then people in nz haha
Forgive me for the noob question but, how does the crane operator get up and down at the start/end of the day?? Does he just climb up and down?? Remote control??
Yes, that's it, must have good leg muscles eh!

Awesome

Common sense back then, if you see a crane operating - stay away! Road cones are extremely overused today.
