I am no good at heights so I was getting the hebbie geebies just watching from my bed. Well done. I knew the boys from Fletcher Construction who put the crane together and dismantled it. Great video with loads of history. Well done. Cheers ian
At 4:24 or so you can see the roof of the ASB building and Auckland Centra Hotel gabled roof. I worked on that roof joining the butanol on the ply panels for a short time in the early 90's. The crane on top of the ASB building was about the tallest thing in town and towered above the roof of the Centa Hotel which was 20 something levels including the basement. Working on the 45° pitch is still to this day the most terrifying thing I ever did for money. The angle from the rear of the crane looking down far below to ASB roof is vertigo inducing to the extreme. Wow! Thanks for posting this. Interesting that it randomly came up on my feed.... The algorithm works in mysterious ways😂
@@michaelcrosse8001I have just randomly seen this... I have a copy of Fletcher's video on VHS, and probably gear to play it... I'm away for a bit but will attempt to get it up.
There was a Security worker who was killed there during the carpark foundation digging. He was driving a mini golf cart to get around, and ran it off a large cliff end. Most people never heard about it, but for those of us that worked on the Sky tower project, heard and saw it after it happened. 😢
i was a kid when this was being built, i lived in town and saw it slowly grow. my view was always from the bottom, so awesome to see this point of view.
Wow how rad was that, I was installing a roof on a 15 story building (Quest on Eden) at the same time back then and was so cool looking across and seeing the Sky Tower being built, thou the tower didn't have the restaurant part up at that stage. Cheers
I was 1 of many helping build the rotating rails for the restaurant The funny part is all the bolts that connect each stage of this crane I was to tighten by hand. May have been a joke but I took it seriously. At the age of 17 I learnt all I could.

Amazing to see this from your point of view- great commentary too. It must have been thrilling up there in high winds. Makes me wanna puke just thinking about it.
I've been privileged to go into the radio rooms a few times up there in the last five years. It's a great building, ugly as all sin - but great for Auckland. Thank you so much for sharing this! At 4:46 you can see the Auckland City Hospital and Starship before the new Main Building started construction and it was just a carpark. Bizarre! Unbelievably exposed there considering nothing man-made in the country is higher than you (in prominence of course). I also learnt in my journeys into the radio units that apparently the Skytower initially applied for consent on the corner of Symonds and K'Rd where there are apartments and Cordis/Langham now. It was declined under the proviso that it would hinder sightlines to Mt Eden from key parts of the North Shore (apparently).
Go the Algorithm ! I was 7 when this video was taken and probably somewhere down there in my dads truck off on a sick day from school, back when life was simple and social media hadn't turned the world gay
