@@BB2O2 so im sorry im not understanding... after its sold out, its impossible to get ever again? Or if it does well they bring it back? Im confused...
When will we ever get another gorgeous, Gothic-Styled Castle in a wintery, mountain landscape from Lego? Yes, I 100% pruchased this bad boy and am hyped to pair it with the Lion knights castle.
This is not a bottom-of-the-valley castle, this is a mountain fortress as the name says. It can't have, and doesn't need a moat. It has steep mountain slopes in its place. About your concerns of enemies reaching the basement, I've visited a real life medieval mountain fortress (beautifull by the way, a main fortified body built in between two natural occuring rock pillars carved out and used as watch towers) and its main defens strategy, once the enemy has passed the drawbridge, was exactly to retreat to the upper levels, pulling up ladders and blocking stairways, then deal with the enemies by shooting arrows and stones from the floor above through trapdoors. I assure you, nobody could've brought an explosive large enough to do any damage anywhere near the fortress, let alone inside. At least before dynamite-age.
Thanks for your reponse! I appreciate that you took the time for it since I love talking about this kind of stuff. A common medieval siege tactic was to tunnel under the opposing castle and bring it down from the inside by weakening the foundations. This involved fire in the early middle ages and gunpowder starting in the 1400's. Either would be sufficient to bring down this castle once the attackers breached the portcullis. Since there are no murder holes or access points to the stable other than the drawbridge, the defenders would have to open it up to stop them. I'm curious which castle you visited!
@@BB2O2 It was the Castello della Pietra (Castle of the Rock) in nothern Italy: it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castello_della_Pietra (unfortunately there is no english for the wikipedia page). It's relatively small but it was originally an actual castle (with a noble residing there) before becoming just a fortress under the Republic of Genoa. I understand your concerns about tunnelling under the walls and then burning the tunnel supports and/or blowing it up with some early explosive mixture. But depending on the terrain that would be very difficult for the attackers, at least without starting the tunnel unpractically far away from the fortress.
@@BB2O2 tunneling the foundations of a castle only works if the castle is not standing on solid rock ... however "Mountain Castle" as qDaniele mentioned is supposed to be set on a mountain top. there is only hard rock underneath. The "burning the tunnels" method only worked because those tunnels had support structure that kept the tunnel stable. Once burned, the tunnel collapsed under the weight of the castle (im sure you know that already, but to make it clear for other thread readers...) Now if you already have a tunnel/cave/cellar or whatever that stands soundly on a hard ground and is made only from stone ... there is nothing you could do to weaken the foundation. A fire would only serve as a floor heating for the upper levels, especially during winter. You would have to bring masons/stone cutters with you to chip away on the arches and pillars. Like ... who does that?
I’m on the fence about this. I love the exterior, but I find the interior to be a bit drab and boring. I think it’s a bit overpriced with no new parts or prints, but I love castles and it would look good next to the lion knights’ castle and castle in the forest. I’ve got the green light from my wife to get it if I want, I just have to wrestle with the internal conflicts. EDIT: I think I'm going to skip this one. I think the interior could be made better with some additional pieces, but the price is just too high for what we get, and I'd rather wait and see what the medieval town square has going for it.
I have the same dilemma, compared to the lion knight's castle, it's just weak, but since I'm a fan of the castle, I'll definitely buy one (after all, it's an attraction - 30,000 pieces for the whole world and it's not a complete dud - the interior can be improved).
Well, I went ahead and pre-ordered one. Seeing the medieval town square helped; too, because I found it a bit underwhelming. Although my daughter says the town square is her favorite new set, so we’ll end up with one eventually, haha.
I wasn't interested at first but the more I watch reviews, the more I like it. I think whereas the LKC displays really well opened up, this one is a lot better closed up. And it's a shame that most of the pics of it have it opened up. But when it is closed, it basically is a tall towers surrounded on all sides by outer wall. The interior is very sparse and will need to be customized, but the castle is architecturally more appealing to me than the LKC was. It's pricey, but still under 10 cents per piece. And lots of the pieces in the LKC were small fiddly bits that added to the interior detail but not the overall size and mass of the castle.
you mean the 1) lack of interior 2) mediocre selection of minifigures 3) having only 15 minifigs less that 10305 4) obvious design flaw with the portcullis in the middle making drawbridge a waste of time from a defence point of view? 5) fact that black falcons are not a winter faction 6) fact that we didn't get the obviously superior Brickwood Castle...sure sure highest standards
The portcullis leads to the ramp towards the drawbridge when the build is closed up, so then there is two barriers for entry. It is a little weird how it’s before the drawbridge, but closed it that’s an two barriers in and the „basement“ is not accessible. You can’t tell though unless you watch Solid Brix‘s early review
Price is def too high, but I realized that the size and detail was exactly what I was needing for one of my projects. Solidbrix did a stellar job reviewing it, and that was what pushed me into it. I’ll def be making some mods to it, but at the end of the day I can justify the price because by the time I finish designing, ordering parts, and assembling the castle, it’d basically be this thing! Only got one, but I think it could be a decent investment if someone did the “buy one sell one” strat… though it wasn’t something I wanted to bother with. MOST IMPORTANTLY, I think that his should really show LEGO that the castle fans need more content. Hopefully things don’t cost us as much though…
What had happened with the castle in the forest was that it was only supposed to sell 5k but bricklink/lego had a glitch and it allowed for 10k pre-orders, people were scared their pre-order would be canceled so lego decided they would just produce 10k of it. But to be fair to the other designers in the same series they re opened the preorders up to 10k for all the other projects except the castle since that one had already been ordered up to 10k. It might have been another set that had been allowed up to 10k due to the glitch and if so all this info would just apply to that one but no matter its all the same
I really love this castle and even at that price, I had to have it. There are two things I don't like so much and which I will probably amend: I think the black roofs are too plain, there I might add some proper roofing. I will probably also tile the interior floors and the way up the drawbridge, making it look like cobblestones.
I did think it was weird the portcullis being at the basement. I didn’t really think about what it meant as far as the castle being undefendable lol I’m still definitely going to buy it though. It’ll look nice next to the Lions knight castle, and I’ll have somewhere to display all my Falcon knight minifigs
I did not buy one of these because of the high price point and lack of exclusive figures or new parts. But that being said, I'm very glad that it sold out so quickly. LEGO needs to know just how big of a castle market there really is.
I am in full agreement with the price being too high (however someone did say the more sets Lego makes and sells, the better it is for them - so this having a limited run may have been the reason for the high price). I have 5 Lion Knights Castles, will get only one of this (I like it, but I prefer getting the better deal to make a lot of different castles out of it). I do have a point to make about it being defensible or not. I think the Portcullis opens up and you have to go through the gatehouse and under it, then over the bridge to get into the rest of the castle. Presuming we have (or imagine we have) murder holes there, the enemy can't station tehre. The stables seem to be there as well, with direct access before the drawbridge, however it's a nice design overall.
Thanks for sharing! I agree with you that you'd have to go through the portcullis to get to the bridge but once the attacks have breached it they can bring down the rest of the structure from the inside. The defenders would have to sally out from the drawbridge to stop them.
