- Lainey isn't looking to impress anyone, especially celebrities. The ETALK Reporter and scribe of the immensely popular celebrity gossip blog, LaineyGossip.com, does what she does for one reason -- to provide a gossip education to the Canadian public. The Toronto-born, self-proclaimed gossip maven got into the gossip game in a very roundabout way. What started as an email to two friends grew to a website with active followers from around the world. More than one million people now read LaineyGossip.com every month, making it a leading international celebrity news source. Elaine's years of experience in the media, celebrity entertainment and blogging space have helped her shape a fascinating TED talk about gossip and it's critical place within modern pop culture.

At the end of the day, gossip is based in insecurity and personal character weakness

I love that any criticism of her talk just goes to reinforce her point. Call her talk rubbish, specious, or pointless and that is a comment on your own belief about what you find culturally, economically or intellectually valuable.
Art, music, film, history, philosophy, science. That's what my friends talk about and they are objectively more culturally, economically and intellectually valuable than gossip. This is true!

I believe that the simplest way to prevent "drama" is to not talk about someone behind their back, unless we are saying something kind. Gossip breeds heartache. But as Lainey shows, it also writes history. Very interesting...

This only shows you can make an argument about anything with the correct amount of bullshit.
I just want to say that all the comments are proving her point. They are essentially gossip on her presentation, and thus reflect our social culture, moral values, beliefs, social behavior, (to the extent of an internet comment), ethics, etc. Thank you, because I think that makes her expert point of view even more astute.
Discussing the presentation and the ideas conveyed is not gossiping.
Gossiping would be using one of her personnal traits or past action as an argument of the conversation.
Commenting on what someone is arguing is not gossip. That's just making a point about what one believes. Me commenting about what you wrote is not gossip, because I am not commenting on your private life

Yes it is a presentation. Gossiping entails spreading private information and defamation. It’s toxic and unhealthy. It makes people feel unsafe, bullied and and ostracized. There’s a big difference between documentation and gossip.

Nowhere in the talk did she claim that gossip was "good" or "bad". She simply pointed out its great potential to raise questions about our society, and therefore gossip can be seen as something less trivial and more academic. That's literally it. If you missed that you need to watch it again.

If you actually read her website you would know she is incredibly intelligent and well read. Not only that, the way she dissects stories is brillliant. She doesnt usually post trashy foder or made up stories. Its not just shit she spews out This IS a conversation about business marketing sociology and pop culture.

christiaan kruger I think it has positive and negative values. The negatives are obvious enough; but it's true gossip, as she explained, informs society what is acceptable and what isn't, what is highly valued and isn't, expected and not (etc; not to mentions reveals).

Excellent TED talk! Elaine has a very interesting view on gossip.
She basically claims that gossip is anthropology, and that it helps us understand the moral views of a society.
She encourages gossip because when you gossip, you indirectly communicate your moral views.
The only other time I've witnesses someone vouch for gossip so rationally was in the Happiness Hypothesis by Jonathan Haidt.
Regardless, I'm not sure if I see a lot of utility in gossip (esp., celebrity gossip).
Some of her key points:
- She gossips about celebrities for a living.
- The celebrity ecosystem consists of:
- Celebrities (e.g., Tom)
- Celebrities' Teams (i.e., publicists, make-up artists, agents, etc.)
- Media & Paparazzi
- Fans (e.g., us)
- Gossip is historical.
- Gossip can be found in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs.
- Gossip is a reflection of popular mores and ethics of the time they're from.
- Gossip allows us to set a standard of conduct.
- Gossip can help us explore the relationship between infidelity and gender.
- When Kristen Stewart cheated, she was penalized.
- When Ashton Kutcher cheated, he was rewarded.
- Celebrity mothers are celebrated.
- This is a reflection of roles (i.e., motherhood) society expects women to take on.
- 3 years after Chris Brown assaulted Rihanna, Chris Brown went on to winning a Grammy and got back with Rihanna.
- This says something about how we (society) view violence towards women.
- Gossip about John Travolta can help us understand popular views on the correlation between homosexuality and masculinity.

I've always felt great contempt for people who gossip and for the reasoning behind gossip in general, but as it turns out, even if we are not talking about celebrity gossip, in the end, everyone does it to an extent, and it mirrors our values and expectations out of our social environment. I have never thought of it like this and quite honestly there is all kinds of gossip out there, and some are of a plain disgusting kind, but the way it intercepts our lives says a lot about the people in them.

I don't see how the "gossip is bad" comments on this video are of any relevance at all.
The ethics behind gossip aren't what she is talking about, nor did she pose any strict moral statements in her speech.
She is simply trying to convey the fact that people collectively pour their thoughts, standards, and expectations of others into a giant pool in the media of celebrity gossip. This pool of thought is the object of her study. Thus, "the media", which is so often blamed for all sorts of things in society, can't really be criticised; the media is merely a reflection of our collective self. When people make large, defiant statements/speeches about society (and the media) they may receive large backing from their listeners, but none of them realise that they are simply criticising themselves.

gossips have been around since the beginning! my favourite period would be that of the bard... and a story is good providing that it is true.
This is not about gossiping guys, This is about dissecting human behavior in the mass media. The way celebrities behave is a reflection of human behavior and sets standards for many people that are influenced by it. This is a brilliant Tedtalk, and you will only get it if you think outside the box.

I feel that this is an unlikely topic, that she probably was expecting backlash from. Her doing this topic as a positive spin off of what most people think about it. No matter you have gotten from this video Ms. Elaine has given you a new prospective of something new. I thought that was the basis of TED talks to give new point of views, and not entirely change your view, but to enhance to seeing it from both sides. I think that she completely nailed this. One of the most interesting Ted talks ever.

This speech altered my views about the concept of gossip. I never before thought about what actually goes behind the study of gossip and in how it truly defines the modern society. While I don't agree entirety about how celebrities are in a way bullied and harassed in the public eye I agree with how it helps create history of how we all function as people within our reactions and responses.Overall good entertaining speech.

Gossip is simply talking about other people. How we JUDGE those people is on us. Gossip isn't bad. How we view each piece of gossip defines character, and as this woman points out, it defines a society. Very interesting piece. I think this may be one of my favorites.

watched the whole thing. didn't expect gossip could go beyond reflecting anthropology & sociology in understanding humans in our context - both historically & academically. Interesting and compelling. Good talk.
Insightful. Profound. And almost missed the train from "Great Speech Station". There were so many excellent points brought up in this talk that would have been utterly wasted without the very last thought of ascribing to gossip the value of an anthropological perspective. Not taking the time to think about what such stories say about "who we are and where we're going" is like the man who has a match that never strikes it to flame. Knowledge is nothing unless applied.

You should read the definition of what gossip actually is. Gossip is mainly discussing about others, not ideas of a subject.

This is something I've never heard before and it is extremely insightful. I would never have thought of gossip as academic until I watched this video. What a very interesting look on it.
I instantly wanted to post on here that this was the biggest load of crap ever spoken but then I realized that I would be doing exactly what she speaking about for the last 19 mins. Am I and the other 400 people who commented negatively/positively a reflection of what our society believes about gossip? This woman is a genius!

I loved her talk. I think anthropology is a very interesting science because it tells us about ourselves; where we came from, where we are now and a good idea or ideas as to where we'll go in the future. I really appreciated and enjoyed her remarks.
Through gossip, the dignity of people who hold the celebrity status that we bestow upon is sacrificed so we can attempt to understand what is morally permissible .

Value system of a society decides who goes on top and be famous. Famous and powerful does not have to be smart, has to to be like by the society.
In another word uneducated society, makes uneducated people famous and powerful.

This helps me be a bit more tolerant of business networking conversations that take a turn towards gossip. At that point, I usually think like Eleanor Roosevelt, "Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people."
Well, when you are in a conversation with someone that you don't know and your real goal for being there at all is to build relationships and build your business, the place you may have to start is "small". Besides networking events can be seriously awkward with more sellers than buyers in attendance. However, a "small", authentic conversation where you really connect with someone can be like Mark 4, "a mustard seed which is smaller than all the seeds, but grows larger than all the garden plants and forms large branches"

When gossip is filtered through the prism of [personal] experience, what comes out is a definitive declaration of what we believe, what we expect, what we reject and how we process. Gossip allow us to communicate a behavioral code to others and set a standard of conduct."
While I can't promise this every time, I at least have an on ramp to assign some value to gossip and the insight it provide to see if there is a good moral and ethical fit between you and a person that you would like to buy from or sell to.

i think she's missing the point that it's not necessarily good to create a society. Ex. If they gossiped about her job afterwards, ("that bitch does THAT for a living?") then they are encouraging/growing a negative society view towards studying sociology. In short, gossip is the creation of flaws in society. Yeah, it says what we accept. But that's not a good thing. - Because it's only talking about what we DON'T accept, and a good society should accept everyone. If I were to say "that's so cool that she does THAT for a living" then it's not called gossip, but it's still revealing what society thinks

I'm having a hard time with the word idea "gossip." Can't the same argument be made about media? Our tv show scripts, movie plots, music lyrics are essential the bigger players of this ecosystem she speaks of. What we watch, what we obsess over, what is entertaining to then becomes the "gossip." I think gossip is too narrow and specific of a social activity to give it that much credit. But, I see their point and enjoyed the conversation she started.

Incredibly, she doesn't address how hurtful gossip is. I appreciate the fresh look at it, but it seems incomplete.
Hey ultimate point was to show how the way we look at celebrities is often the way we look at each other, and what is considered "news" in the gossip world is a good reflection of where societies morals stand as of today.
Actually she did. But she did it in a very sly manner. The reason for not saying it outright is because it would sound trite, frivolous, and these elements would make the ideas presented here sound likewise. She actually said it at the end. More or less she says, "gossiping reveals WHO WE REALLY are and deserves academic study. So go ahead, GOSSP". Gossip IS negative, it is hurtful, but her talk demonstrated that it will never go away. It wouldn't be gossip if it wasn't hurtful because otherwise we wouldn't keep it within a certain circle, celebrities have it hard as the gossip about them doesn't remain contained within a pair of group of people. She approached this from an academic standpoint and the depth of her talk matched her ending lines where she almost challenges us to gossip (and not be aware that we are revealing more about ourselves than about the victim of the gossiping).

I don't think she conveys it quite clearly at the end, but I think her point is that we have to be more critical about what we read and hear in the media, and what we say about celebrities and whatnot. Everything in the media communicates a social message and expectation, so we have to be mindful about what we receive from this media, and what we say in response to this media.
I’ve never understood the “bad” of gossip as everyone shares situations with there own opinion. Taking someone’s opinion of someone and applying it without your own research is the problem.

She is not saying that the mens' actions are the cause of their subsequent success.She is merely making a point on how the two are correlatable. A very valid argument,in my opinion,as she offers abundant examples to support it.She explains that we can observe human behaviour and judge it with regard to sociology,psychology and anthropology.Evidently,"gossip" is the critique on our society.And the FACT that the existence of gender roles inhibits equality between the sexes is irrefutable.
