  • Hi Family, I hope you are staying safe and sane! There has been a lot of talks and canceling of homeschool curriculums for not being inclusive and correct in their representation of American and Black history. I wanted to share my thoughts and feeling as a black homeschooling, non-religious homeschool mom.
    Thanks for watching!

I agree with EVERYTHING you said! I’m so over us complaining about not being included in things when we can use that same energy to create our own. That’s what I’m in they process of doing and I wish more people had the confidence to do so. Great video 👍🏾

Great video! Thanks for sharing this. This is an important conversation. I've been teaching art for over 23 years and noticed a lack of Black artists represented in the art curriculum so I created my website and channel.. Our art curriculum is inspired by Black visual artists. We have art lessons, tips and resources for all ages.

That’s cool! What’s your website! My daughter and husband draw together often. He can draw very well. It’s one of his hidden talents lol 😂. I still have a glow in the dark flower he drew for me when we were dating. We’ve been married 23yrs. That’s how he and my daughter bonded during Covid. I’ve been homeschooling 3yrs now. I usually take 2mths to prepare my curriculum. She would love a drawing class to add to our stem experiments this year!

I’ve been a homeschooler for 9 years, I’m a homeschooler in the southish. I’m Jewish. This is such a great video, you are so spot on with everything. Glad to find your channel. It can be incredibly isolating. Christian groups and super expensive groups seem to be the only group options. I’ve always used secular stuff, but never really ever found an actual history that seemed inclusive or even factual. Luckily I used to teach so I just do our own stuff from good resources. I’d love to know your recommendations for later. I’m going to recommend your channel. It’s really great.

My family is still Christian, however, our beliefs are VERY different than the mainstream Christianity being peddled in most homeschool curricula and seemingly shared by most homeschool families that are visible online. Which is why I choose secular/inclusive resources for our homeschool. I related immensely when you said you were repulsed by so much of what's out there. SAME!

I loved this! I am a secular homeschooler as well. Disclaimer: we are a white family, but I want my children to grow up being inclusive and understanding history from all sides. I would love to hear any reccommendations you have for books or curriculum that don’t whitewash history. I feel they would be beneficial. Thanks for putting this video out there!

I found my tribe! I totally agree with everything you said. My son at the age of 4 discovered the white-washing with Abeka. At 4 years old! That's when I knew, Christianity would never work for him. And we were already on the fence with it and boy did confirmation come.

New black homeschooling mom in a small town in Iowa so I feel your pain all too well..I've decided to homeschool with no formal curriculum. I gathered all the info on the basics of what my son needs to know for his school age group and just use that to hold my hand while I find resources, topics and activities to encompass those skills he should be learning. We are very laxed in our homeschool style.

We were in Ottumwa for 3 months and I regrettably put my kids in public school temporarily. My son had his took kicked out on the bus, the boy said, " I kicked a black man's tooth out!" And all the school did was suspend the boy for a week or two. Went to the superintendent, spoke with the principal...they said there was no racism.

We always have the discussion about creating our own characters and recreating our historical, oral, griot stories instead of using those that the mainstream society have. We are substantial. Period. We have our own. Period. We have our own. Begging oppressors and those that continue to oppress is an endless cycle of discontent.

Thank you for this! I LOVE your honesty and how well you explained your views. I AGREE 100%. I followed a lot of homeschool moms ( most of them non-black because I couldn't find black ones when I started) and bought so many curriculums some suggested and used but it was easy for them to apply the curriculum to theirs family because it fit their views and also several things you mentioned like the lack of black history, or being to religious. I dont mind the religious part in certain cases but sometimes it became to much. My kids LOVE to ask questions they are aware and into stories and they like to find characters they relate to or who they feel they can connect with thats when I realized we weren't incorporating enough " black heroes" in our readings. I'm just glad I can find another mom/homeschooler I can relate too. Everything you said have crossed my mind several times. Once again thank you for your knowledge and wisdom!

Thank you for this video. I was today years old when the thought of homeschooling my daughter really became something to consider. Between now living in the South and being worried about how history is taught (which is even worse than the white washing taught in northern schools), the lack of care to do anything about school shootings, indoctrination, and crazy bullying, I'm really deciding if homeschooling is worth it.
One major concern I have is dealing with the stereotypical homeschooling community. I have no problem with Christianity from the standpoint of what Jesus actually said and did. But I have a major problem with stereotypical Christian conservativism. And that and white washed history is also my concern with private school.
I'm black and my husband is Hispanic so the messaging my daughter gets as a 3-fold marginalized person is important to me. Thank you for letting me know that there are "others" homeschooling their babies. ❤️

I just discovered your channel. I love this video and agree with all you've said. I was homeschooled myself, in the 90s and early 2000s, and we were the only family that, despite being Christian, wanted to homeschool secularly and use non-religious resources. In Texas 😆 Now, I am homeschooling my own children and I am so thankful that there are so many more secular resources and curricula available now than there were back then. I'm also so happy that there are many voices demanding more representation and honest history in our homeschool curricula. That being said, secular homeschoolers, BIPOC homeschoolers, and non-religious homeschoolers are still the minority, especially here on yt and on social media. I am so happy every time I see more families thinking outside the box and sharing resources and having important conversations! I have a channel here as well, sharing secular and more inclusive resources. I'll be subscribing to you! Thank you for your content!

I am sorry you have had a bad experience with the love and freedom of Christ. I am also a black homeschooling mother and I too have experienced the “ isolation “ with some not all homeschool or mommy groups. I never let that hinder our homeschool journey or even make an issue to my children. It’s quite a blessing to get to meet different people with different backgrounds.
We have always lived in suburban areas. A choice my husband and I made a long time ago. My children have a variety of friends and all people are welcome to our home.
I understand about the history to some extent. I have always read history with my children and we always talk about what is right and what is wrong. I never let lack of representation be an issue. Jesus was not white he was Jewish and he came for all. Making most people Gentiles making the love of Christ all the more beautiful and to anyone who believes Jesus is more relatable because he is white obviously does not read scripture.
I have also created groups in my area and all races came out. It was nice for that season. We are a black family but most and more importantly we are believes in Christ above everything. Thanks for your video.

Thank you for sharing your experience! I love all of this and love that your journey has been one full of enrichment. We haven't had any negative experiences with homeschooling either. Everyone has always been welcoming and very kind. Much like you we lived in predominantly white areas and my kids had a "diverse" group of friends (I use that loosely) but that was at the efforts of me and my husband ensuring they had diverse groups of friends. For us our journey has led us in a different direction. We still homeschool, but our beliefs, choices and decisions have changed drastically over the years. This is why I love homeschooling it provides the opportunity for us to make adjustments and changes as we see fit for our families and our individuality and uniqueness! I really appreciate you sharing your journey and experience!

I pulled my kid from public school over this type of mess. The school was making my child stand up and pray every morning to thier god...in a public school. They were telling her that evolution wasnt real. They were telling kids that the civil war wasnt over slavery, that slaves liked being inslaved, and basically teaching my lil white kid to be a big ol bigot. I live in Southern Louisiana and I could not believe that they were so forth coming with this bs, literally no shame. It was bad when i was a kid, its even worse now. I spend most of last year re-teaching her. I didnt just make her read books about slavery either, I TOOK HER TO THE PLANTATION. Imagine living in a place where you can see old plantations while youre just driving down the road and trying to convince little kids that slavery was ok or didnt happen. I walked her over to the slave quaters and asked her if she thought the slaves would have been happy there. I showed her a room with chains on the wall and let her know(age appropriately) what happened there, per the guide's recounts. I also taught her about the bible, all of it. So that she could understand why her peers and community act the way they do. I taught her how spiritually abusive it is to tell little kids that they're inately sinful, that her body is sinful and somthing to be covered or owned, that she is unworthy of Gods love if she doesnt follow certain doctrines and I also told her that hell is not real and was made up to control people. I told her the truth and it made people so mad. I let her in on some history too, of how America really came to be what it is. We learned about the genocide of indigenous peoples and how they are still being treated today. We learned through hearing stories of people who have been oppressed, not from Mr. Mathew, whos daddy was in the kkk in the 70s. I hope that more people find a way to afford to stay home and educate thier own kids. Its so sad to me that many can not. We moved into a 700sqft shack and gave everything up to be able to do this, I know that isnt realistic for most people. But I know that i wont regret it one bit. My baby is going into this world with her eyes and heart wide open and who knows in what ways she will impact others. Keep it up mama!❤

My husband is biracial (half black/half Japanese) and we have a mixed family. We are not religious. My 13 year old daughter strait up nti-religion at her own choice. We do not fit in anywhere. I will say however, the black homeschool community has been the most accommodating. We have tried some of the co-ops here and we either have to sign a statement of faith and then be the only mixed family with my hubby being the only black person or we are just straight up told we wouldn't fit in. My husband has raised our daughter since she was 3 and she knows no other father and we have had co-op instructors tell her that my husband is "obviously not" her father when it came to assignments focused on family. We just chose to stay away for the most part. Occasionally when we do join up, it is usually with groups focused on black history and started by black families. 9 times out of 10 there will be people of other ethnicities there and are welcomed with open arms. Many though, are still Christian. At least we don't have to sign a statement of faith. Usually telling people in these groups we are not religious is met with an "okay that's just fine too". It still is awkward for my daughter sometimes though. Almost without fail we will be the only mixed race family and my daughter has never met another white child who has a black dad. Theres usually a lot of her explaining that yes he's my dad and yes I know he doesn't look like me. We haven't met a lot of adopted homeschoolers either so explaining that her dad adopted her take a minute sometimes.

Such a refreshing video! Very enlightening as well. Im African..and homeschool isn't big here.. I noticed the white families who lead this lifestyle are mostly missionary families. And most homeschool social media mothers post 'faith' as part of their lifestyle content. So that makes a lot of sense now that you bring it up. We are just beginning this homeschool journey so Im just doing a lot of research on curriculums etc and Im on the same path as you of once being saved and now sort of taking a step back and questioning some things lol. Off to watch more of your videos 👋

Hi Cahylah, I know this can be difficult to navigate for both you and your mom. I would encourage you to have a conversation with your mom and express what needs you may have. Many areas offer co-ops, tutorials, and other things to assist with homeschooling. You could always direct your mom to my channel for ideas on how to homeschool while working. If you need to start looking for resources now on your own, I would start with Kahn academy. It's free and has several different courses, teachers, and tutorials. I hope this helps. 😘

I want to homeschool because I want to teach my kids the true history nothing white washed. I've subbed, I hope you can give some pointers on where to find resources that are accurate and actually represent Black culture and history.

As a multiracial, LGBTQ family I do think it’s worth talking to curriculum companies. On the one hand you may have a curriculum that includes LGBTQ history, for example, but unfortunately it’s white-washed and in the other hand you have a curriculum that celebrates racial diversity, but excludes LGBTQ history.

This is very true and also so sad! My hope is that it will get better amongst homeschool curricula and not worse as we see the curricula changing for the worse in public schools.

I think it's wrong to assume certain curriculums don't want certain races to be a part of it.your not even giving these people a chance and just assuming they're bad and wrong without ever trying to talk to them
