@@Darkwingdad Thanks man I appreciate that..really means a lot! Just subbed to yours also and I look forward to more of your videos and learning a new trick or two.
Nice. Great test. A few things that I would factor in as variables however are cost and availability. 2 in 1 Rustoleum for example is $11 here in Canada, but it is actually kind of difficult to find. Duplicolor can be found, but only at Canadian tire and is $18. I've never seen the other ones. I realize we're all in different places, but cost is a factor in my opinion. One other variable I would look into is post cure durability. I'm currently half way through a Scout Trooper helmet and I've already dented the primer (2 in 1) on a few occasions. I'm curious if the overall hardness of the primers is different once fully cured. Finally, I think one other variable I would factor in is wet/vs dry sanding. I wonder if any of them perform better under those different techniques.
Thanks for the input! I did do a pricing & availability rating in part 1. A cure test would definitely be a great post test to do which I’ve thought of. Great minds think alike!
All joking aside when I was spraying I was wearing a respirator & when I sand I always wear a mask, it was just hard for the short time I was sanding/talking. But ppe is always important
I'm having issues with my primers seemingly not adhering or curing on my prints after pre sanding with 150 gouges right down to the PLA layer with a fingernail even after 48 hour dry time. Have you had any success with a dusting layer of adhesion promoter or etching primer first?
Hey! I just today watched your video on using upol 1k combination and wanted to basically exactly replicate your process for sanding and filling prints but unfortunately came to discover that the bondo filler primer spray had been discontinued. What would you go with as a second choice? Have you found anything remotely similar?
Yea I just did a video confirming it’s being discontinued. I’m doing a whole new video with new filler primers to compare to Bondo. For the time being upol filler primer (orange label) is the closest!
it feels good to know youer not stupid , lol i used rustoliom and lost my mind because of how long it took to dry to matter how light of layer i spray , now after watching you i got to know why , FYI, if you guys wanna speed up the prosses place your coated models inside of any UV light machine i have one form my resin printer and i managed to make it dry in almost 2 hours instead of 2 days well without UV it took more than 2days . thanks a ton for this amazing Video man .
Appreciate the feedback, I honestly don’t know why anyone can use rusto. Unless you have 4-5 builds going on where they can sit for days & overlap there’s so much wasted time & frustration with using rusto primer.
Yep. Can't rush primer fillers. For me, 24 hours, minimum. A week even better. Oddly enough. I wet sand and it does reduce clumping and clumping happens more to finer sandpaper so got to be very gentle
I just hate introducing water into a semi porous filler, slows down progress that’s why for me bondo is the best. Sand it with 400/600 & it’s buttery smooth
What's your usual order of operations for sanding? I did one quick pass of 80 grit with a power sander on this part and one layer of primer. The can says to do 3 layers. Wondering if I should do 2 more layers or move up in grit sanding by hand after 1 layer of primer in between each round of sanding. Or do you do the 3 coats in a row still?
First things first always use a putty. It is going to speed up the process immensely. Do not rely on just filler primer, it’s a step, not a staple. Sand with 80 followed by 120 (80 leaves the surface gouged up) apply putty, sand with 220 Apply filler primer Sand with 320 Repeat as needed. I have several videos on how utilize a proper putty will not only speed up post processing but also improve your quality
seems like i would go with the krylon for more detail work and bondo for the heavier and flatter surfaced. i have only used the rustoleum 2:! and man did it clump even days later
I honestly don’t know how people use rustoleum! Once you get the spray technique with krylon it really isn’t all that bad! And bondo, yea you can’t go wrong with it. BIG tip which I didn’t mention, a water based primer is ok ON TOP of a solvent based(krylon over bondo) but solvent based on top of water based you want to give adaquate time for the water base to fully cure
Even when I used it here in the FL summers it would still gunk up being in a 100* shed after 10 hours. It’s just a bad product & a huge reason so many people fail when finishing 3D prints
Yes, all these primers contain thinners & solvents a 3m respirator is best but if you have a spray tent & are outdoors you can “cheat” with a 3m dust mask that has the filter on the front. Some with argue but with a exhaust fan & being outdoors it’s ok in a sense. If indoors 100% use a respirator, if you need links let me know
I hope you can answer this but it may be beyond the scope of this test. What if I have already used Rustoleum Filler Primer on my 3D printed armor & done light hand sanding. Is it possible to add another filler primer type/brand or would that cause an improper chemical reaction/orange peeling? I've heard Rustoleum & Krylon DO NOT get along well together.

Dupli-Color FP101 Scratch Filler Primer is the same as 29/40??
101 is very similar to refinish & dries like the 2 in 1, I wouldn’t be shocked it it’s a relabel bc I haven’t seen refinish available anywhere
I just need a decent flat black spray paint. The Rustoleum 2x goes on too thick. Any suggestions?

Try duplicolor or krylon they aren’t as heavy of a paint. I use both in satin for busts and they are great
