Classic Game Room reviews THUNDER SPIRITS for Super Nintendo from Seika and TechnoSoft released in 1991 for the SNES!! This is the Nintendo version of Thunder Force III, or more likely the SNES version of Thunder Force AC which is the arcade version of Techno Soft's Thunder Force 3. Thunder Spirits is a side scrolling shoot 'em up (or SHMUP) for the 16-bit SNES which is very similar to Thunder Force III except with the SNES music style, no choosing levels and a few other differences. - บันเทิง
Love your channel so much. You review so many games that I wanted to play so bad when I was a kid but couldnt afford. Thank you
Thanks for reviewing this! I could not for the life of me remember the name of one of my favorite childhood games! Now I know!
I would definitely drink some Thunder Spirits!
Thanks Mark! The music in this sounds great, luv Thunder Force XD
Great review, this game is awesome
i think cgr could actually go on forever. there would never be a shortage of games for mark to review - which is a happy thought.
0:14 Wow, what a nice clean game cartridge.
The first SNES game I own !
I second this, Mark's opinion is going to be great, the game is practically made with him in (and myself included always being named Mark)
An absolutely awesome soundtrack!
I really suck in these kind of games. But I enjoy watching Mark playing it. Nice review!
I always loved that water level music on Thunder Force III on my Megadrive.
like the sounds at the end!
MVHH
Wow, never heard of this but it looks great, I will seek it out.
if this ever comes to VC i will get it!! never even heard of this game. thanks mark!
3:09 The laser sounds went well with the music.
Revenge of Shinobi gets a reference again! Woo!
I remember this game being inferior to TF3, mostly in the sound dept and had some slowdown, which was common in some SNES games.
I got this game not long, really fun.
My very first Super Nintendo Game.....
This came before AVGN, CGR was the first game reviewer on the internet starting in 1998, and Mark even reviewed GTA 2 when it came out...
man, that fire effect just messes with my head holy crap.
I like your style!
I wish they would make a disk with all the thunder force games...I need to get these games back.
Th3 was called thunder spirits in the arcade , this is a port of that version
Keep tryin! They take practice but dodging that hard pattern in stage 3 or beating that boss without dying in stage 5 is satisfying! :D
Holy cow, loving TF3 this would be a gem to find
I got this game with original box. It's a fun shooter really.
He did review thunder force 4. Its called lightening force...man I miss these games.
Did you see the shirt? Classic Game Room started in 1999.
thunder force 3 slow motion edition... Lol!
Sure, cause that he enjoyed , turned the game easier. lol
I don't mind the slow down. But I can't stand the no auto fire
I've been playing Biometal on the SNES lately, it's a great shmup!
Looks nice.
The Genesis chip produced some rockin ass tunes!
This game takes me back to my childhood when I was throwing my controller on the ground from frustration.
I love both avgn and cgr, and I'm not a moron, but I do agree with your statement non-the-less.
he loves his genisis!
Please review Thunder Force 4, it's my favourite Mega Drive game, it's actually a perfect video game.
CGR's been on the internet since 1999.
Madness!
The hunter is the best weapon of homing to chase enemies
Technosoft didn't do the Snes port; it was done by Seika
yeah, i heard of that emulator. i haven't went through the effort of trying it. i did try to check it out through youtube but there's not nearly enough videos of it to get a idea about it. i guess i have to try it out.
....
HOW DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME?!?!?!
First time on my memory Mark using footage from other games when referring them. O_O
Playing Jurassic Park on the SNES....ohh the memories....pity there is no save function...cos it took me 12 hours to finish back when i was 15...that is,in 1993
Thunder Force AC: OK, let's add another sound channel to kick up the rock vibes.
Thunder Spirits: OK, now let's take the same tunes but make it sound like you're in a supermarket.
This is the hardest game in the universe. The last levels are just an outrage.
Haha try Gradius iii
You're right. I just got mine in the mail and got my ass kicked!
Gradius iii is very similar to Thunder Spirits.
Now that I found how to get to the options menu it is way funner and more responsive.
He's also better because he's got an arcade, and he's not a vulgar hothead
Forgot to mention that this version has SEVERE slowdown, while Thunder Force III and AC has none. The gameplay is not as well as it should.
genesis is best for: heavy metal, techno, hip-hop, & pop.
snes is best for: rock, epic, horror, & jazz.
Cool game!
The lack of autofire definitely put me off of this game when I played it years back. Kinda wish I had known about the secret options menu (Start + Select on title.)
Even knowing that and discounting the slowdown (which isn't that bad for the SNES), TF3 still feels just a bit better I think.
Snes9x emulates the sound perfectly from what I can tell, with it's newest revision. The other emulators are obsolete. bsnes (now called Higan) is also accurate, but needs a fast pc.
Mark should review a free SHMUP for PC called Hydorah. I'd link it here, but TH-cam doesn't allow links in comments. It's got a very clear Gradius inspiration and style.
Agreed, it definitely works better on earthworm jim and both of them work better than the animated cartoon, lol
One game i still cannot beat
+Jacob Landrum I doubt anyone has beat this regularly without using the save & load function of emulators.
I beat it, but i think in the summer i beat it, it took 9 years off of my life :P
There are VERY few games that are harder than Thunder Spirits.
Considering the original is one of Mark's favourite games and he reviews games for a living, wouldn't he be the one best qualified to talk about this game specifically?
I loved the joke with the snes cartridge and the sega genesis
I think the music sounds better on the Genesis. Sometimes that chunky, ear-bleeding techno style just suits the game better, the same can be for Earthworm Jim on the Genesis...it's just better.
He is he tweeted about it last night.
I always loved the Thunderforce series. Great shooters. Why were you going to put the SNES cartridge in the Megadrive at the start. Am i missing something here?
this game is where skill was invented
I'm genuinely curious to hear some hip hop soundtracks for genesis games. Do you know of any good examples?
This SNES version is good, considering the slower CPU, but the Genesis original is the one to play.
so there's no difficulty level select on this and tf3?
The way you're shooting, sounds like you didn't know about the hidden menu to enable auto fire. Amazed you didn't get carpal tunnel playing without it.
Mark is my hero
cool profilepic
2 games got in mind because of the music while you showed the SNES and SEGA versions. 1: Super Castlevania 4 on on the SNES and Mega Turrican. I played these games not long ago so I can compare to them. Why is it relevant? No idea...
he goes back to the flipping 50's lol
Mark has also been at it WAY longer than AVGN.
DAT music at 3:10
Pura nostalgia
This game is like Thunder Force AC From Arcades and Thunder Force from Mega Drive and SEGA Saturn in gold pack 2
Well, obvious troll was obvious, but somehow I still want to point out that CGR came out about 6 years before AVGN, who started making his videos in 2005.
More like the Gradius and R-Type games. Those were tougher ;)
Moar Super Nintendo love!
Have you tried the bsnes emulator? It's supposed to be much more accurate than most emulators, but needs a fast system.
Why cant we get a thunder force collection on disc or on xbla psn.
Surprised he didn't make a reference to Thunder Thighs
Thunder Force III for the Genesis is one of the easier games in the series. Thunder Force 4/Lightening Force on the other hand pretty hard.
It might not be as great as the Megadrive port but that hardly is SNES's fault. There are also examples of games that have been ported better for the SNES compared to MD =)
The harsh sounds of the Genesis win this time!
haha, I lolled at thebegin cuz it looked like u wanted to jam the snes carttridge into the genesis;p
Thunder spirits is a super destroyed, super slowdown port of Thunder force arcade.
So who's Mark from Brooklyn, NY? Just wondering, because by some strange coincidence, that also happens to be my name and hometown. LOL!
long live mega drive!!! \o/
Break out the hypercolor shirts and flannels! It's the 16-bit war reenactors. If you're a classic gamer and you're not playing both you're doing it wrong.
I always thought that slowdown in shooters was cool. Like...slow motion when things get really intense. Eh, glass is half full, I guess!
what i remember most is no autofire!
IMO the only time the SNES sound any better was with orchestral soundtracks. Look up ChiptunedRaijin and geckoyamori's Mega Man Genesis covers and see for yourself how much more power and feeling FM synthesis brings to those tracks.
I never realized that the Sega version has an even better sound and Nintendo's version is kinda downgraded, probably because of the cartridge limitations that Nintendo suffers back in the days, but maybe its just me. O.o
Figures.
Now then, Thunder Force VII for the US! TECHNOSOFT, MAKE IT HAPPEN! :3
***** Actually Thunder Spirit is the port for SNES of Thunder Force AC that also is the arcade version of TF3, and I think the arcade version don't have anything to do with Sega. Anyway, that don't justified that Thunder Force 3 is really better compared to Thunder Spirit.
Lol honestly the lack of auto fire option ruins it for me
Thundertastic
not to mention that CGR is 14 years old...
I'm a TF noob, only played 3 and 4, but 3 is the better one IMO
is there more slow down?
dude this channel is much more older than avgn what makes u think that? ts da first game review in da internet!
._.
I was breaking the hello chain with "C-C-C-C-COMBOBREAKER"
