How to Make A Plumeria Ribbon Lei

- I’m thinking when we are in ‘shelter in place’ or ‘ work from home’, and want to make our own son/daughter/love one a lei for graduation, birthday or special events, maybe this video can be helpful.

This is the written version
In this video we are going to make plumeria ribbon lei. This all the materials that are enough for one 38”- 40” lei. Please use 3 yards Extra Strong Upholstery Thread (instead of 2 yards). Put the thread in the needle and make a knot at the end, and started from the knotted end wind the thread around the clothes pin and secure the thread in the pincher of the clothes pin like about 6 inches.
Because we use single faced ribbon, so there is a shiny side and a dull side. Put the dull side together, so the shiny side is on top (on the outside part).
Put the white picot ribbon on top. Measure about 6 inches, then we can start sewing from that end.
We are going to sew up and down every three loops. One, two, three up. One, two, three down. (it’s a running stitch every three loops).
Continue running the stitches, after about 8 inches pull down the ribbon. It will make a spiral by itself.
Work little by little like about 8 inches at a time. Open the thread and secure the thread into the pincher.
This is another lei that I like to make. It is a little bit different, but the same technique. We put the dull sides together and put the shiny parts outside.
The difference is I sew up and down every two loops instead of three loops. It will create a different wave of the ribbon.

Karyn Lam I had this same issue when trying to make the lei. The amount indicated for the threading won’t make for the length of the lei

Yes, I usually used about 14-15 yards for 38" lei. I wrote 16 yards to be safe, or maybe some people want to make a little bow, etc.
How long does it tske you ro finish one lei?

Hi! This lei is so beautiful. Would the length of this lei be appropriate for a 11 year old child?
Usually I made 32" for elementary children. It'll be more than enough. This kind of lei is supposed to hang by your chest. But if you want longer, it's still need to be higher than the person's belly button. That's my guideline 😉
What yard adjustment would you do for a lei for 3-4 year old kid?

I only have a 10 yard satin ribbon. Will that work if the person is not very tall? Please let me know. Thank you.
I think 10 yards is a little bit too short, but it will make an OK length. But you can make with extension ribbons, if you need, too. I have a video that shows how to add extension ribbons. Thank you for watching 😘
AYE! I made a plumeria lei (1 color and Picot) - watched a different video as I had not found yours as of yet, and they said to use a 5 in needle and every other picot hole... OMG, it would not spin, nor lay correctly. :(
My advice is sew running stitches (up/down) every other picot for about 2 inches only at a time, and push down clockwise little by little. I hope this helps.
The shape of each plumeria seems wrong. Did I make it too tight?
The thickness of the ribbon also make a difference. In this video I used 2 single faced ribbons sticked together. If you used only one ribbon, you just need adjustment a little bit. Usually tight is good, but try to loosen a little bit, maybe it will shape better. I used 7/8" ribbons, and the white picot ribbon is 3/16".
Satin ribbon are both 7/8”?

To connect the lei, usually I use this trick. Before I tie the thread together, usually I lock stitch both ends first. I hope it helps. 🌺🌸

What is the belt
Do you mean the white ribbon in the middle? The white ribbon is 3/16" picot satin ribbon. It has little loops at the edge of the ribbon. So, I count every 2 or 3 loops, to sew the lei, so it will look even and neat. If there is no picot ribbon available in the store, you don't need to use picot ribbon. Just use the blue/yellow (any colors) ribbons and do running stitches every 1cm, but the lei's ruffle will be different. The lei will be pretty, too. I hope I answer your question.
