Snarky Puppy's bassist and de facto leader Michael League stopped by Reverb to demonstrate some of his favorite pedal tricks, drop some knowledge regarding his favorite bassists, and talk a little bit about his pedal philosophy: "Is this the most musically appropriate thing?" - เพลง

If anyone is curious, the bit where he plucks exactly an octave above the note? Plucking at that point cancels out the octave harmonic, as a result you're hearing a lot more fundamental. Since we hear very little fundamental on any physical instrument, and instead usually hear mostly harmonics and overtones, usually 2nd harmonic and up (integer multiples of the 1st harmonic, to be precise), ie starting from that octave harmonic, cancelling out the octave harmonic does sound like going an octave below (since the fundamental literally is an octave below).
If anyone wants to read more about this, get a hold of the book "The Science of Stringed Instruments" by Mark French.

I have noticed that when i recorded all the harmonics possible on a single open string (without the fundamental) and layered them together. The sound I got was just a sound of normal string pluck. I was surprised!
@Dave Wallace yep, pretty much this. But also the isolated harmonics usually sound thin and trebly, so having the deep lows when you layer them was something unexpected.
I can't find this book, would it be 'Technology of the Guitar" or "Engineering the Guitar" by Richard Mark French ?

Absolutely love his enthusiasm, and he remembers that you play music, but you also "play" with music. Amazing.
Fun Fact: The OC-3 also has a Drive function in it, which you can use exclusively if you turn the octave mix all the way down. I used that pedal for years just for it's drive. And with a pick...watch out.

It also has a poly/split mode, so the lower frequency range is affected, but not the high, so you could play chords up high and still get bottom end on the root notes
I'm gonna try that! I never read the manual! The oc3 is a very underrated pedal. Everyone raes about the oc2, rightly so as that analogue sound is dope, buut he 0c3 tracks a lot better. You have to have amazing ears to tell the difference between the two in a live setting.

The fretboard sub octave thing is SOOO cool i just tried it!
yes the natural anti-node picking position is good.
But remember it is not a sub octave that is happening , just more fundamental in the tone. A bass guitar has little fundamental when plucked at the usual position . Mostly 2nd harmonic
how you do it?
I also discovered something, you can play stuff on the A string and get a kind of 5th harmonic with the E string: pluck the C on A string and drop your plucking finger on the high G on the E string with a kind of hammer-on, sounds interesting.
You can tell that he really, really loves doing what he's doing. His excitement is so up there! Respect!
I come back to watch this video every 6 months, it's such a masterclass both musically and technically, Michael League is a wonderful musician and looks like such a nice person
I've watched this video so many times now, not even to learn how to use the effects really but to learn licks lol. I always find something new to tinker with every time. Michael League is a master of music, he really knows how to show very interesting and inspiring bass lines. One of my faves for sure

My favorite part of this is just how excited he is to play, and even with how good he is still genuinely surprises himself with sounds with the "this is what this normally sounds like....NOT today hahah" *continues to shred*

i know exactly what he means though, holding a note and just letting it sustain on a bass isnt as cool as with a guitar

Not gonna lie I’m getting every pedal here now. Already had the MXR Octave and loved it for years, but the MOOG MF Drive is seriously one of the most versatile pedals I’ve ever played. I love this so much, it’s like pedal gear talk but with musicality in mind.

If you want to hear him play these styles all in one song, listen to the song "The Good Things" from Bill Laurance from his live album "Live at Union Chapel". Bill Laurance is the pianist in Snarky Puppy, so it made plenty of sense to have the great Michael League as his bassist. The bass intro is great, but the bass solo gives you goosebumps. Listen to whole live album actually, it's so worth it!

The EHX Bass MicroSynth lets me dial in some awesomely keyboard-esque sounds. Took some tweaking, but I was able to get closer to that late 70s synth bass sound (e.g., "Funkin' forJamaica") than with any other pedal.
What a wizard! his feel is something else.

Some sweet tones
How to get sustain from a bass guitar. Rotosound strings, crank the mid up on your amp, along with the volume, stand in front of the speaker cab, so that there is sympathetic resonance vibration between your bass and your amp.
Tune the tone control until the notes sustain. :-)
you dont get a suboctave picking an octave over. It just cancels out other harmonics making a more sinusoidal tone....that's just the natural fundamental..its cool though, sounds like electric piano.
