As a person who has had skin cancer a few times, you are doing what is best! Now that I live in PA, I see many of those hats with the Amish and Mennonites…you wear it well and with the beard, you add to your mystique 😊 Love your videos! 🎉
No tripod on my viewer! Amazing! I'd love to see maple. Thanks for putting together all these wonderful videos, even if they interfere with your work day!
When you said it nobodies business you were so right... each needs to vote the policies that they feel are Most important to them, and it is no one else's business
Anyone that understands anything about the current politics already knows who he’s voting for anyway. One ideology wants to burn everything down, and one wants to rebuild the country. Nathan is a builder.
Perhaps he can box grab bag assortments of odd sized pieces that would be suitable for pens, carving small figures or wooden spoons, making chessboard tops, etc.
We like the looks of your new hat. Good plan to always wear one in the sunshine. Between a straw hat and a tractor, tractor wins hands down! We also like your new rooster
Hi Nathan I tried to get some of your butternut bowl blanks but they were gone fast .I did manage to get 2 of the walnut blanks ,I wish you could make them bigger than 3 by 9, I know you're not making much but I purchased 2 to make a deeper bowl paid 52 a piece plus shipping I would be willing to pay more for bigger blanks .Any of those trees you mentioned would be good Ambrosia Maple sounds awesome keep up the good work (👍making shavins) your friend Henry
Greetings from England. Great new hat. Where I live there is not a tree in sight so my only exposure to logging and woodcutting is your channel which I find excellant to watch. Keep up the great conteent.
The hat is perfect! I have to use a hat for the very same reason you do. But i haven’t ever tried a straw hat. Guess I’ll have to give one a try. Thank you for the great videos.

I cut some black walnut bowl blanks this week too. Save those thick flitch boards for live edge bowl blanks too. The bark/sap wood/ heart wood looks good when turned.
Nathan most of the time for bowl turning the sap wood is not that big an issue. Most of the time it will get turned off. Even if not the contrast is an interesting look for the bowl. Thanks for the videos. The are great
Great Hat Nathan. Before you said anything I was thinking I saw a lot of those at the Paul Bunyan show last year. Never saw the tripod. Stealth mode works!
Suggestion for the hat. I wore one for years and had a sweat problem. I cut an old, thin towel into 10x1.5 inch strips and would tack one in along the existing inside band. I used rubber cement and when the strip got too gross, just pop it off and tack in a new one. No more sweat in the eyes!
I may be a bit of an oddball but I like a wide variety of both heart wood and sap wood. The contrast in colors is what I enjoy. It also depends on the project.
Nathan, you are the hardest working fellow on TH-cam. Never saw the tripod, but the views down your drive toward the hills look like they are straight out of Tuscany. What a beautiful slice of Nature where you live. Cheers.
Nice hat Nathan and it is definitely an Amish hat I see here in Lancaster County. I often see some if the men that use black electrical tape for a band on their work hats. They are hand made and I know some women that braid the straw which is then sewn into the hats. But because no one shocks their wheat anymore the long pieces of straw come from S.E. Asia. I remember well years back when farmers still shocked their wheat and corn stalks. The Amish were the last of the farmers that did it. I always love to see the fields in evening or early morning sun and the shadows it made. When I lived in Kentucky there were some small farms where they still shocked their corn stalks. Kind Thanks and I’m looking forward to see that new building going up! Seems like yesterday when you were making beams for your shop. Is there time anymore that doesn’t fly? Many Blessings for Family and Farm! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania
Take it from an old man who lives in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania... Your hat looks awesome! I'm biased, of course, due to the fact that I am a straw hat wearer as well.
Hat gives off an Amish vibe, looks good on you. Wood Blank sizes for turners, Pepper Mills 3x3x12 will net a 10" mill, Bowls are great 3" thick or thicker and 6x6 or larger those 9x9 should be awesome, but if there was an 'undesirable' log that could get 12x12x4... could be some very cool results.
I have a name for the new addition to your farm. "The Annex". It just came into my head while mulling over names to send to you. You might not like it and that's okay. I love your channel and watch all your videos for a long time now. Love your new equipment. I told a boss of mine once IF you want me to do my job, then you have to buy me the tools with which to do it. I got a new computer...When you do a job, it's done right and don't let anyone tell you different. Keep up the good work and Hang in there' Friends. Have a beautiful blessed day. Faye in Texas. Boy has it been hot here.
A farmer buys a rooster to service his 200 hens. When he gets the rooster into the barnyard, he tells him, "Randy, I want you to pace yourself now. You've got a lot of chickens to service here, and you cost me a lot of money. Have fun, but take your time." The farmer points him toward the henhouse and the rooster takes off like a shot. WHAM! Randy nails every hen in the henhouse, three or four times. Randy runs out and sees a flock of geese down by the lake. WHAM! He nails all the geese. Randy runs to the pigpen, the cow pasture -- soon, he's been on every animal on the farm. The farmer is distraught, worried that his expensive rooster won't even last the day. Sure enough, the farmer wakes up the next morning to find Randy laid out flat in the middle of the yard, buzzards circling overhead. The sad farmer shakes his head and says, "Oh, Randy, I told you to pace yourself." Randy opens one eye, winks, and nods towards the sky, "Shhh, they're getting closer."
Good hat. Also from Tennessee and these sunny days can be brutal. I got skin cancer several years ago and lost a big chunk of my left ear, also have to wear long sleeve shirts so I use fishing shirts because they are well ventilated while keeping the sun off too .....
I like sap wood mixed in my wood. The pith is fine if you can turn it away. We work with what we have, but I prefer blanks 12 to 14 inches when I can get them. But you are talking walnut here, that is premium stuff.
It would be nice to have a vertical saw 23.5" dia cut max capacity like they use in machine shops to just cut vertical blanks and sell bowl blanks by the pallet load all different size logs, just part them out on an automatic saw, the one i used uses blades that looked like a sawmill blade but it was made to cut metal. Leave them live edge with the bark on them. The wood turner most likely has a jig to cut them on a band saw how he wants them. I think a bowl with bark on it would look cool kinda flintstone looking. Im sure you can soak it in wood harder to keep the bark from rotting.
Great video Nathan. Hey I do like your hat. It looks good on you. I really like your mowing implement on back of your tractor. It does really good. 👍❤️
As a wood turner I sometimes like the sap wood on walnut. The contrast in color can make for a very striking visual for the finished piece. Other times depending on the style or shape of the vessel I am turning I prefer no sap wood. That being said I think there is a market for both.
Would mothballs under the tractor seat help keep the snakes out? I noticed the shadow for selfie stick over the past few videos, never saw the stick itself. Amazing.
Hi Nathan, just wanted to thank you for your videos ... I really enjoy watching each one and looking forward to more. I just ordered a walnut bowl blank and can't wait to receive it. Thanks again and keep up the great work, God Bless, Dennis Holba (La Mesa, Ca)
Nathan, just one thing about hats. I’m from Australia and we have the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Please wear a hat even when there are clouds. I’ve noticed that you don’t always wear a hat if it’s cloudy.
Get a Tilley hat. SPF 50, broad brim, lifetime guarantee and vented. I’ve worn them for at least ten years, first in Phoenix and now in South Carolina. And they look great! Just a bit expensive, but really worth it. I wear them for the sun protection.
Order a straw hat from the Grasspad in kansas city mo. These have more of a western style top like a cowboy hat. Or better yet a Sombrero from mexico with a larger brim to cover your face. The hat the grass pad has has vents close to the top for air conditioning helps keep the heat off your head also has a chin strap to keep it on your head if your driving a tractor. That hat looks like it was made for a Northern clement you need one made for a southern location your closer to the equator thats why mexican hats have a larger brim cast more shade.
Did not see the tripod or the shadow. I have a hat just like that that does a great job of keeping the sun off when working out in the yard. Great choice.
Like the new hat, noticed right away no hole. Looks good on you brother. Enjoyed the video. Ambrosia Maple. Happy Father's Day, God Bless you and your family.
Randy is definitely one handsome rooster, and quiet too!!!! That tri-pod sure does give a neat perspective with no drone needed, and maybe I'm blind, but I didn't see anything of the support!!! Damn technology is something!!
Great video Nathan. I trust the walnut blanks sell fast for you. We took several black walnut trees down when we built our home. I’ve been trying to decide how I should mill them. I think it may be bowl blanks-lol.
Regarding walnut sapwood for bowl turning, you'll find a variety of opinions. It isn't a functional problem to use it, so it's just a matter of aesthetics. I personally don't mind a little, depending on how it presents in the wood. Bowl turners often do prefer the grain to be somewhat symmetric -- that is, the center of the tree (but not the pith, obviously) in the center of the blank. This is especially true for wood that isn't dried, as it allows the wood to warp evenly. Again, it isn't a hard requirement, just a preference. I know you're shipping these, so cutting them to blocks makes sense. But if you ever have the opportunity to sell them directly to customers, you can save yourself a lot of trouble. Throw the log on the mill and center (and level) the pith as well as possible horizontally. Make a pass above and below the pith to take it out as best as possible (you can cut on either side of this to make spindle blanks if you'd like). The top and bottom can then be directly cut into blanks (a little bit longer than they are wide, please). Just leave the bark on -- we'll turn it away or even make a natural edge bowl with the bark intact. For really premium wood or blanks you can't move quickly, slap some anchorseal on them or dip them in paraffin to keep them from checking. (Look for "log to bowl" videos -- often this is done with a chainsaw, but the techniques translate to a mill just as well. There's a pretty good one by Alexander Designs that I just found. He cuts away the outside edge of the bark, but you don't necessarily have to.)
I totally get wearing gloves. I'm at ground-zero for brown recluse spiders. We have black widows too, but they don't hang out in my shop like the fiddle-backs do.
Good video Nathan, lots happening. Your hat is good for the job at hand to protect your face & neck from the sun. I too have had to have skin cancers removed from my face, the last one got into some of the nerves so I had to have radiation therapy. All seems good now but I wear a large straw hat similar to yours when outside in the sun. I look forward to seeing your equipment shed go up & see how you are going to organise it. Cheers mate, Don from South Australia.
Happy Fathers Day Nathan. Thanks for the thoughts on the POLITCAL garbage going on right now. I agree with you. Stay safe and keep up the great videos and fun you have around there. Fred.
As far as bowl blanks go Nathan, anything burl or birds eye would be nice. But if I could get ahold of the rancher who owns the field across the street from me, I’d have a very interesting log for you to cut. As I am not sure what species of Oak it is, but if it’s live oak it’s a seriously old one to be nearly 8 foot wide. I’m thinking it’s possibly red oak or Spanish oak, what makes it so interesting is what the tree is revealing in the wood as it’s dying since it got struck by lightening about two months ago.
Very informative video especially on the yard vs forest logs. With all the work you have been doing on the fence line you probably disturbed the snakes living in that area. I enjoy your videos. Best wishes.

You and your hat, looking good. See a lot of those around me in Michigan. Lots of Amish. May even get one for myself
The hat. I think a couple fishing hooks would look nice. Don't really need the hooks, just the flashy and pretty colored bobby thingys
Yes to the hat. Meant to say that on Patreon. Enjoy your father's day!
Awesome! Thank you!
