NF being the old man, as revealed in the final seconds of the video is showing that this song is ALL about NF's old self (ie. younger NF). Elderly NF is allowing his old self to die. If you are are believer or not, dying to one's old self is a core tenet of growth in Christianity. Elderly NF is a father to his old younger self that still resides in his mind (or flesh), it follows him around. In a way we all are the parent over our past, our past habits and thoughts all started with us, and can stay with us. Nathan as a fellow Christian HAS to take up his cross daily, to put to death his OLD self in order to continue to become his NEW self. NF, like many of us is not proud of his past-he has to "let" his old self/flesh "down" into its grave.
Colossians 3:5-11:
"Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator."

About mental health; my xp: to anyone who's ever been a victim of violence because of their appearance, gender, orientation, race : DO NOT ever let a hateful notion 'there's something wrong with me' sink in. Trust me, it's a recipe for self hatred and compulsive anxieties later on. When we suffer and we need a break, it's only natural to think: 'maybe if I was as everyone else' I would be accepted. No, haters will always find something else to prey upon. I've always had kinda androgynous look, which was a fuel for bullies when I was growing up. I embraced it, used it to my advantage in my acting / modeling career, I was almost the face of Leon in these new Resident Evil games :)
Didn't even get through whole thing, stopped reading at "haters", would never listen to you as a therapist or open up ..no offense but yeah

Hey @heartsupport, I've been to many places and seen a lot of things. As an almost blind INFJ Sigma, I've used music and its reflective aspects. Many people never listen, only hear. We often limit ourselves based on others. The song I heard recently felt really necessary to me. Sometimes we don't know why we go through certain things, and the choices we make also affect others. But then, people break free from their limitations, chains, and barriers, ascending to new levels. It raises more questions than answers.

Two fold meaning. Lyrics are clearly about his father. Video shows an older version of himself. I think you can interpret either, but I side more clearly about his father
Interesting how you did this just after NATE... It could explain a little how it led to him warning himself to not let himself down.
this one hits hard i feel this deep especially with him drowning and the father figure is just watching him drown and doing nothing when i was going through the worst things in my life my parents blamed me and were dismissive and made no effort to stop what was happening and then worse they mocked me for the trauma response and said things like i don't know why your so wired about xyz thing and just acted like i was crazy for no reason
love the imagery when he's drowning, drowning mentally and people just stand around and do nothing or see nothing

I really like the song “paralyzed” its like the perfect picture of what it feels like when ur in a depression u can’t seem to get out of.
Most over looked lyrics in the NF Journey. "Shoulda had my back, but you put a knife in it. My hands are full. What else should i carry for you." Imagine someone close to you stabbing you in the back. You cant reach up to pull the knife out, because you have you're hands full with all their other BS. They are unwilling to apologize, and remove the knife for you. So, you're stuck carying around all their BS. Plus the knife that continues to hurt, and nag, and fester. To the point you become so broken all you can say is... What else would you like me to carry for you? Talk about feeling hopeless.

For example 1 Nate watched himself drowned, when he had the power to save himslef all along.
2 Nate's dad actually watched him drown in sorrow after his mom died.
This was one of the first songs of NF's I ever heard. And I thought it was nice, but nothing really incredible. It was only after I decided to start digging into his discography and story, etc. That I came to understand his music. Why it is what it is, how it became so much more than mere lyrics.. But I can safely say it was all 100% worth it. More than worth it. I needed it.

Taylor the old man is Nate, he’s looking back on all the things he did wrong. Hence the lyrics I let you down. It’s old Nate looking at younger Nate and saying I’m sorry I failed us.

7:32 I see what you’re doing there change the meaning of the word right? It’s a very kind thing to suggest. But I almost feel like it shows a lack of understanding. I think most people don't understand words or rather their purpose. Words or the means that we have to describe ideas and emotions and they are very limiting yes but they are also the only thing we have to convey our thoughts. If I allow my wife to understand me bye exploring my pain with her that is letting her Down into me. Unfortunately when I use that phrase it is generally because I have messed up or not lived up to an expectation that she had and therefore let her down it happens quite frequently said she put me up on a pedestal but then saw me break and so I let her down. He usually have real world physical ramifications something I messed up affected her and my children I let her down. It's a fact it happened I am a let down and I always have been one it took a long time but she finally saw. That's not the point though I'm getting wrapped up in myself that's why flipping that around changing my perspective or perception of the phrase doesn't actually do anything. Because I still let her down nothings ever been the same since
