  • In this short, Carrie Fisher explains why she decided to accept the role of Princess Leia in the original Star Wars (1977) film, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. In this interview, Carrie Fisher explains that Princess Leia was unique for a damsel in distress. George Lucas told her that he wanted a fighter, and she was intrigued by the possibility of turning stereotypes on their head and planning a badass princess.

Probably for the same reason Harrison Ford hates being thought of as Han Solo. Neither of them viewed their roles as the end-all, be-all of their careers. They both were more than happy to move beyond Star Wars and do their own thing (Carrie slightly less so).
This being in stark contrast to Mark Hamill who, despite playing multiple roles over the course of his life, has always had a special connection with Star Wars and with George, as he himself has said on multiple occasions.

remind me, who strangled the worm? remind me, how did she get in the palace of said worm? she was never a passive object for someone to save, which basically is a "dmasel in distress" trope. She was always an active participant and/or initiator of action.
ALSO, "help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi" was not about saving her, it was about delivering intel to help the rebel cause, she has never asked to be saved from Empire, and didn't count on it.
You're either seen the movies very long time ago or are lying.
