Next major update should focus on DJ mode : - FX Buses 1/2 should be assignable to CH1/CH2 like on actual DJ gear - Be able to hold in sync mode with key lock - Search function during file import - DJ oriented advanced scratch FX - Integration with Algoriddim Djay.
Search function could be great! Actually you can assign bus 1/2 to channels (REMAIN+pad14/16), I prepare it before to be sure is set up corrected. For sync mode with keylock, you can change the stretch mode for dj mode in the settings, from 'Vinyl' to 'Backing'. (Check my other video where i explain it)
Thanks for the demo and explainations! The import-BPM analysis bug is weird, but if that behaviour is fixed or bug checked the DJ mode will be totally legit. I only have small starter controllers for DJing with Tracktor, but I'd love to replace that setup with the 404mk2
can we preview songs which are stored in the sd card before loading them in any channel (so without having to wait for it to load - because it looks like it takes some seconds)? and can they be in mp3 format? does the device store the previous bpm analysis somewhere? so if it already analyzed the bpm of a particular song before, next time you load the same track, it shouldn't re-analyse i hope? Also can we save cue points? like not having to adjust the starting point of a song everytime i load it and instead save it once and it will be there next time. If these functionalities already exist, then this can replace a digital dj setup for most use cases. I just wish it had some sort of a companion mobile app to easily browse through/edit playlists/track collection. then you can basically put this in your backpack and party anywhere you want. or alternatively, let the mobile app/device handle the computing (like algoriddim djay or rekordbox mobilee) and act as a controller+audio device to handle the master & headphone output. and then at some point if roland makes a compact "dj mixer" controller that you can connect your sp404 and mobile device (like NI traktor z1 or similar), you basically have a full production+dj setup which you can easily carry around. I hope someone from roland reads this. 😇
Thanks for the info, about the bpm, i assume that i works like dj software, sometimes the transients are weird so the analisis suggests a wrong bpm. Also it would be nice that they add import of songs on the fly tough the app.

DJ mode is useless. The way the 404 deals with BPM makes it all awkward. If you manage to get two tracks lined up there's no good way to transition. There's just volume. If you want to EQ or filter or put an effect on one track, you have to think about what FX bus is assigned to the pad, and you need to remember the shortcut to reassign the pad to the other bus. It's just an awful situation where there's no playlists, there's no track browser... There's just scrolling through a memory card and arbitrarily loading tracks to pads in groups of 16. If you want to DJ like a normal DJ, the best way is to load two copies of everything, so you only get 8 tracks per bank, but then put the left half vs. right half on different FX busses so you can actually mix. But that's kinda ridiculous and it's still clunky. If I was going to DJ with a 404 I would use two of them and use the new looper to transition. That's actually completely usable. But then you're spending a lot to have a sketchy substitute for CDJs. It'd still be a total nightmare if you're trying to play for over an hour because you can't do simple things like browse a folder by BPM, or even see what's on the current bank's pads without checking each one individually.
Useless maybe no, harder than a cdj yes. It's perfect for 1-2 hours set, if you practice you can transition pretty well. If dj is your job, than buy some pro cdjs. If you mainly play live and sometimes you play some dj set, the sp is for you

I’m pretty sure the unit has to stop playing to determine the BPM of a new sample, just as it does when producing beats on it.

Wow, that is so incredibly stupid that you can't detect the BPM of the imported sample. Kind of ruins the feature.
Later it worked and he took it back. Maybe it fails to detect sometimes

I guess the safest way is to analyse your tracks beforehand and label them for bpm and key 🤷🏻♂
