But I don't think that's the only route to happiness. I agree with you, that you can learn to be your own worm too. And I hope you find happiness one way or another.
I think we’re all squonks, and at the same time we’re villagers, while simultaneously being worms. We feel like no one can love us, but we do have people around us who see past what we deem ugly. We all are naturally judgmental as well, it’s just a fact. I think this folklore is powerful because it illustrates the human being. There aren’t just squonks or just villagers, or worms. Everyone has a judgemental villager, a loving worm, or a lonely squonk inside of them, everyone hates part of themselves, which helps us appreciate the beauty of the world around us, the beauty of young love, or a bright pink sunset hitting the white waves of an ocean. Our inner squonk brings out the worm inside all of us.
Damn, the piano lick at the beginning is bringing back memories. Music is what keeps me sane, and Ants From Up There released at the perfect time for me. I played it all of last year, but it's been some months now. My mental state has been changing drastically, and my mind is always overwhelmed with too many "what if"s. I've identified what causes it and come up with new solutions that would be a massive help, as well as music, but I just don't because it's hard to break out. But hearing that piano lick just now... that pulled a heartstring. Coupled with this painfully beautiful video that I also needed, I think I'm gonna get started on a long overdue project right now, just to get the ball rolling on my long-awaited self-improvement. i def agree. when i discovered AFUT and BCNR as a whole my mental health was in a very critical state, with newfound anxiety i didnt know how to deal with, and having just come out, and having to totally ostracize myself from my former increasingly queerphobic friendgroup, among other things. i feel like it really channeled those feelings and the situation of being in a highly transitional state for me, as well as just being an excellent album to cry to. still one of my all time top albums :)

I identify a lot with the Squonk. As an autistic, I constantly question my self worth. I got bullied a lot in school. And combined with my anger issues, I felt like an outcast. I lack confidence and I doubt my own abilities. But after watching this video, I am touched. It made me recognize that I have worth in this world. My worm is my brother. I’ve thought about this a lot, and originally I felt connected to the squonk. Now I empathize with the worm, being loved is cool but giving love to someone who needs it, who is good on the inside, is that old honorable cause.
Man, this hit close to home for me. I'd always have falling outs with friends and peers, and a lot of that happens because I am scared of being alone. The best friends really are those who would venture into dark places just to find you, and sometimes the people you think you want to be around make you miserable. Never reject those who ernestly care about you and let you know you matter. You'll miss then when they're gone.
