  • BEAU IS AFRAID IS 3 HOURS LONG! - WHY THIS WAS A PROBLEM FOR ME - Double Toasted Bites - Today we are talking about the film that a lot of people may be talking about, especially the topic of its length, and that's Beau Is Afraid and although we've given our full review without talking a lot about the spoilers of the ending, or the attic scene, and not giving too much of an analysis on any scene in the movie as we don't want to ruin the film for people and also think that should be saved for one of those "explained' videos, but is the same 'ol song and dance of artsy movies that are annoying? Or was there not much else that Korey disliked about Ari Aster's new film?

      Yeah again depends on the type of movie that you're watching that you can get invested in or certain parts where you can just completely tuned out.
      It was a whole festival scene for me although I did love the animation I probably fell asleep for a while. At least that's what my brother told me.

      @@ryuusaki7309 But of course, YMMV. I’m down with 3 hours for Lord of the Rings, Avengers, and yes even Beau is Afraid, but Avatar 3 just felt padded to me, doesn’t help most of the characters just aren’t that interesting. Which is extra inexcusable to me since this film took 13 years to make, how the hell could they not put more effort into that script? Yes, Cameron’s visuals are great, but you know why I keep coming back to Aliens? Yes, the practical effects are incredible and the tension perfect, but those cast of characters are so insanely charming in both positive and negative ways. I felt closer to Ripley and the marines in only the first 20 minutes of their film than I feel close to the Avatar cast over 6 hours.

    I loved Beau is Afraid. Everything Ari Aster did was intentional, which made the run time even more impressive to me, if anything as a display of his raw talent. The one thing I feel is going to really alienate people from repeat viewings is just how hopeless it is.

    • @coreypack
      @coreypack ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm writing a horror novel I hope Ari Aster would adapt into a film! I think he could bring out that hopeless and dreadful feel I would be trying to convey in my story which in short is about a successful black attorney in San Francisco who is placed under a dark, horrific, and terrible curse by a mysterious voodoo witch from Louisiana who accuses him of "Taking" something from her many years ago! The thing he "took" from her was her daughter whom he raped, as a graduate student, while high on cocaine during Mardi Gras on Spring Break back in 1989 and killed her to keep her from telling the police/destroying his future! In the end, the only way he can make it right is to abandoned his family and live the rest of his life alone and forbidden from getting close with anyone else or the curse will impact them too and if he commits suicide, he will go to Hell!

      Basically the “was it all in his head or real” debate kinda misses the point because the answer is both.
      Ari Aster is showing a fantasy world based entirely off of how someone with intense anxiety views the world. No the real world isn’t actually like that but that doesn’t matter to beau because he doesn’t experience reality, he experiences the world according to his anxiety and the audience is brought along for that ride. It won’t make sense unless you realize this is Beaus reality. Simultaneously in his mind yet very real to him.
      My favorite reviewer Lucas Blue has a more articulate take on it if you’re curious.

    The thing about the last two Ari Aster movies is they were both double layered. I'm still peeling through all the layers in Beau between the emotions, symbolism, side stories, etc. I don't understand with movie prices the way they are why so many people would get upset if they get a shit ton of content in one go. Yet people are perfectly happy to pay the same amount for movies with a linear story and half the length.

Nothing a halftime break couldn't fix (I needed a quick break anyway, this movie is a lot to take in), but it did drag once or twice in a way that Midsommar and Hereditary didn't.
