POV : You're a highly trained urban response unit, The last thing you see is a man running at you with akimbo glocks before wildly crane kicking you into another dimension.
Every Combine APC in vanilla Half-Life 2 is "locked" so you can't get in them. This is because they still are enterable (Valve planned on having the player use one at some point but that idea was scrapped) but entering them is so broken that it results in you being unable to leave the vehicle or even drive it.
that's why they added their very own vehicle and not just any old model but the drilling machine from 1990 movie Total Recall or at least that's what they were aiming for, right?
Not every single of them locked, the first 2 APCs you encounter (that shoot at you when you run on the rooftops) are unlocked, if you manage to get to them. And you can even drive them on the xbox 360 version, although the viewpoint is broken.
The last thing you see is him starting to swing a shotgun and kick at the same time, and then turn towards you, instants after, you are promptly discombobulated
That'd require a bit of work to implement, as you can't just copy the functionality of an existing weapon and call it a day. I'm sure they tried, but I'd imagine the result was too awful even by their low bar.
So lore wise this is just the alternate universe where Gordon decided to learn martial arts so he could use his thunder thighs to kill anyone and anything with naught but a kick. Excellent mod 10/10.
I love how they added lost coast as an easter egg, but entirely failed to account for the fact the player wouldn't have their car afterwards. This shit is great.
Best part is, they removed the trigger that spawns the car per level. In base Half-Life, if you move on without your car, it will spawn it again once you go into another level. In this mod, they seemingly removed it for whatever reason.
This thing really does prove one of the reasons Valve decided to reduce the amount of weapons you have available, and why enemy placement really matters, and bugfixing, and a hundred other stuff
My favourite part is how the devs basically responded with "cope about it" to the criticism about the mod. Truly a passionate and well intentioned mod team.
This mod is Smod for a new generation, it's stupid, buggy, completely undermines the careful game design Valve had in mind for the game, but it also has this childish innocence to how it was made where you can tell whoever was the project lead was just like "wouldnt it be cool if our mod had THIS thing" and never considered if that would make the game better or worse and I kinda respect it for that even if the end result was a mess
I think that's the whole point of nodding, if I wanted the experience the devs intended, I would be playing the base game, seeing a load of shit thrown at the wall is just part of the mod
Best way to implement feature creep. Wish George Broussard was like this, Duke Nukem forever may have still been late and needed Gearbox to finish it, but it would have been more fun!
"Adding more NPCs, weapons, and complicated additional gameplay features into the game would definitely make the mod x10 more better than SMod!" - The developer after smoking 50 cracks
The image of Gordon Freeman just hopping around on one leg constantly side-kicking while rapidly hot-swapping between twenty identical weapons is honestly more terrifying than his usual 'mute psychopath with a crowbar' meme persona
Imagine being a CP officer, cowed into submission by the Combine, and the first thing you run into in the field is some dickhead dual-wielding Berettas, bouncing around on one leg while using the other to kick everything within three feet of him like a deranged Chun-Li. I'd be more scared of him than the aliens.

Jolly: "wow, night vision. What a useless idea that has no need here" Also jolly: "god it's so dark, I can't see a thing. Really wish I could see in the dark somehow"
You know, I see *exactly* why the Combine soldiers were sliding down the stairs at around the 53 minute mark. The modder didn't set up the stairs to be a slope, but individual steps instead... like we're back in the late 90s with mapping.
54:34 Fun fact: Those blue textures are actually tool brushes. They are used to help the map function and aren't suppose to be visible in the final render. Either the devs broke something there, or they just wanted the windows of that particular house to be painted blue with some letters for extra detail. If it's the latter, then it's a rather suave look for what is an otherwise rather unimpressive abandoned building sitting somewhere on the coast of Eastern Europe. Edit: I just noticed it on other buildings on Highway 17, and this time not even all of the windows are painted. Truly some bold architecture for the modern era.
@@chrisfratz I'm so sorry, I really like your answer, but I suspect that, like the first comment that answered the same thing, yours will also disappear. either, because someone doesn't get the reference and reports it, or because some AI is overly cautious.
The text is area portal but got cut off because the placement. It was used for optimization for houses or closed area, basicly when you are certain distance away from the window, it will unrender everything behind that window, or when you got close, based on your view cone it will only render what considered visible to your field of view. The dev did break the map, it should only be visible when you are debugging or testing the map, my guess because they have to add changelevel trigger to the lost coast level int the coast beach and forget to check few flag when compiling plus no play testing at all.
They took the term "throw it at the wall till it sticks" but instead of just throwing a few strands they yeeted the entire pot and not only got spaghetti everywhere, but busted a hole in the wall with the pot. Can't wait for part two.
Everything in this is just so perfect, from the surprise lost coast transition to losing the car to the needless smudge on the crossbow scope, it’s a masterpiece
I love the visual image of Combine soldiers running in terror from Gordon Freeman hopping after them on one foot while reloading two pistols and doing the can-can.
54:35 Area portals are used to occlude parts of the map when the player is far away, helping to reduce the load when rendering. Somehow they managed to destroy the area portal, but it still has its texture applied to its faces.
Rly late, but they probably got the leaked valve vmfs, and than optimised them by func detailing the house (valve never properaly optimised their maps for faster compile times), they also accidently func detailed the areaportal itself making it visible ingame
54:35 Those funny colored windows are supposed to be area portals, it’s basically a thing you put in Source maps (usually on windows or doors) to optimize maps and make the game only see and process what’s in that area portal's view. I’m guessing they never tried to turn them into normal brushes that with these kind of textures would not be visible and only do the function they are supposed to.
But that building was already there in the base game, meaning that they would have had to turn the areaportals... back... into... world... brushes... I think their logic process is above our understanding
You know, I just had a thought. You know what this mod needs? Quadruple wielded pistols! You hold the third and fourth pistols with your feet. When you triple wield you can't kick and move more slowly, when you quadruple wield you can't move at all. Possibly add in quintuple wield if you want to get creative on how Gordon manages to shoot the thing.
@@lukevankleef4245 Russian overkill. It adds several characters with different fighting styles and big pile of stupidly overpowered guns. Like Machine guns that shoot miniature MiG fighters that carpet bomb the area in a straight line.
As someone that watched the 7+ episodes on twitch, then tried it by myself, it's a mixed bag but the fact that you could play it as a F.E.A.R game with akimbo, kick and bullet time is indeed cool... The itel bloat and doom plutonia levels of ennemy spam? Well ....
The vent at 13:50 is actually the same in vanilla hl2, for some reason when you break the cover the entire vent expands. With the mod the vent is already expanded and the cover is where its supposed to be
Fun fact: those teal colored windows are called “area portals”. They are often used in windows and doorways, they usually black out the area covered by the portal from a distance. Typically they are supposed to be compiled as a func_areaportal. Here, they weren’t, therefore why you can see them.
That's the first ever realistic dual wielding reload I've ever seen. Every other game just goes with the below the camera reload to hand wave it. That was sick!
There are a few games that manage it, like the Left 4 Dead games. At this point it's mostly just Call of Duty that's too scared to show off a dual reload.
CS:S has had a reload ani on the dualies since like 2002 that looks good. They drop the mags and load new ones in on an open slide then close both slides at once.
34:34 this is giving me major "The Raphael Parable" vibes. The player can choose to play the game however they want, explore whatever emotionally driven story they want to, set the kick damage insanely high.
After seeing how this mod plays, as well as how the Dev Team responds to criticism, I have come to the conclusion that the driving force behind this entire mod is Tommy Wiseau
This mod is like trying to challenge manslaughter charges in court by saying "Actually, it was COMPLETELY planned, thank you very much, and I ALSO killed 12 other people in the process that aren't detailed in the charges!"
The pistol in Half Life 2 is based on a Heckler and Koch USP chambered in 9mm Parabellum. The other pistol introduced here at 13:08 is a Beretta M9 chambered in 9mm Parabellum. And yet despite essentially being the same damn thing, the Beretta is treated like some sort of super pistol. An upgrade to the USP. Classic video game thing right there.
It would technically be an upgrade to the usp, because that's the usp match, meant as a competition grade pistol instead of a pistol meant to see a lot of use.
@@ng.tr.s.p.1254 incorrect actually, compensators, different barrels and differences in barrel rifling can have an affect on bullet velocity, reducing the round's effectiveness.
The worst part is, at some points you can see some good shine through in this mod. At the beginning seeing a citizen being decimated by that Cremator was actually pretty awesome. And being able to overcharge the gravity gun with suit energy is also a neat concept. Sucks that the mod mostly actually plays like a bad Mario Maker level. Edit: I also like how they implemented back things like the Hydra that were literally removed in the first place because they weren't fun. Why would you implement something back that isn't fun. Who decided what went into this mod. (because of the edit i have lost the heart but it was worth it)
The Cremator introduction was how I thought this mod would be. Scripted introductions to NPCs like in the actual game, instead of just spamming them in random places like a GMod dupe campaign.
the cremator introduction was just goofy af due to the ragdoll and no, getting the supercharged gravity gun in any section of the game other than at the end is a big no no
@@dkskcjfjswwwwwws413 I never said the ragdoll wasn't goofy, apart from that it was really cool. Also, yes, that's why I said a neat _concept_ as it'd have to be nerfed a whole ton from how it is in the mod to be balanced.
The devs did take down the downloads since they are supposedly updating the mod to fix problems the community reported, which tells me that the dev team at the very least cared about the feedback and want to make it a better experience.
I now have to imagine Gordon entering the water, then proceeding to just aimlessly drift and float staring at the sky, arriving at the Lost Coast, fucking shit up, going back into the water, drifting and floating to repeat the process.
Imagine the horror a combine soldier or metro cop feel when they see a man, with an HEV suit giving a weather forecast, aggressively bunny hop, kick, swing weapon, lean, and fire a weapon towards them.
This is like playing someone else's "immersive 1000+ mods" Skyrim modpack without reading a modlist. And, yeah, we Russians looooooove modding. Edit: 34:23 I faqing died from sensory overload. Thank you, Jolly.
Just want to say that the absolute funniest and most hilarious part of this is when Lost Coast just appears. I'm a Lost Coast Certified Enjoyer, and the fact that they just... smacked it into this mod? Is just so insane. Like wow, it's just. There!
Jolly's impression of the mod can be plotted as a sine wave: from "this is shit, how do they even released that" to "YEAAAH, BABY, THAT'S WHAT I WAS BEEN WAITING FOR"
This escalates so gradually from "nothing seems to have changed at all" to utter insanity, with such perfect pacing to when each new ridiculous thing-both intentional and unintentional-is introduced, it's hard to believe this isn't just a brilliant parody. A troll fic (e.g. _My Immortal_ and the like) in mod form, if you will. Like, take those ERROR model soldiers for example. They show up after you've already been fighting those particular enemies for hours, and stick around just long enough to remain funny before going back to normal. (Not to mention, it's the sort of thing that would be caught in testing if they played through the game even once.)
It's the perfect shitpost mod, a thing fairly common in eastern modding and apparently unheard of or at least severely underappreciated in the west. There's this weird expectation that everything _has_ to be "serious" and "balanced", it's really odd.
Either those were supposed to be shotgunners (which don't appear in Lost Coast, but you need to switch to LC assets to see the fisherman - they just forgot to have the assets set back when you return), or more likely they're the "Optical Camouflage" troopers from SMOD. The corpse he finds on the second floor of the house that he thinks is a texture glitch is using the optical camo, so it's possible they stole the code of SMOD and forgot to also steal the model that goes with it.
I get your point, and I agree, but the fact that your example of a troll fic is one that is still debated to be legitimate to this day and not the confirmed Half-Life 2 troll fic Half-Life Full Life Consequences bothers me more than it should.
The first time I played Half Life 2 I did the entire airboat level on foot cause I somehow missed the boat. The thing is, the game will let you do this all the way up till the last puzzle of the level where you have to lock a see sawing ramp and jump off it at airboat speeds to finish the level. So I spent a very long time thinking the game was terribly paced due to how long this level was on foot just to get stumped at the last puzzle before quitting. When I tried again I found the airboat and realized what was wrong lol.

@@trianglemoebius kind of. if anything they stole some NPCs from other HL2 mods (e.g. the dead OpFor 2 someone mentioned above), because it's quite too much effort to port Lua code (Gmod addon) to pure C++ (Source SDK)

it says so much that not only does this game have a kick button. but a melee button and also 3 different melee weapons. its like the devs saw some games have kicks and melee buttons and didnt once realize why no other game had both bc they serve the same purpose

This is because they still are enterable (Valve planned on having the player use one at some point but that idea was scrapped) but entering them is so broken that it results in you being unable to leave the vehicle or even drive it.
that's why they added their very own vehicle and not just any old model but the drilling machine from 1990 movie Total Recall
or at least that's what they were aiming for, right?
@@Shifty989 The digger vehicle was the excavator from the HL2 beta.
