    I think that you are correct about the perception of not needing good speakers and amps for Atmos. However I think the biggest difference make is actually the processor/AVR. I’ve heard my fair share of of theaters now. The two biggest differences I’ve ever heard was when I added amplification to the preouts of my AVR. Then when I went from that AVR to an Emotiva processor (let’s not talk about bugs 😅) but it was absolutely insane.
    You constantly hear people say speaker separation or speakers disappearing in a room but you never understand it until you’ve heard it. The best way to explain it is when I look at my two front height speakers. I see them, I know that they are indeed producing the sound, however you can’t perceive where the sound is actually coming from because they are so perfectly matched in output, EQ, and impulse response, that it’s just one speaker putting sound above. I can’t tell that they are both playing sound at all. It’s like my ceiling is producing the sound and not the speaker.
    I use the same demo content at friends houses that I’ve help setup home theaters in and when they cheap out on the AVR there is just no sound at all. Some AVR’s are definitely better than others. However it always sounds like the front stage is producing 100% of the sound and the other speakers are producing whispers. If the amplification in the AVR is good it produces decent sound however because the Digital to Analog Converters (DAC’s) aren’t as precise or accurate as separate processors you don’t get that speaker cohesiveness or bubble of sound effect that people talk about.
    I say all of that to say this. You don’t know until you know. Most people who say it doesn’t matter about surround or height speakers are just repeating what someone else told them. They don’t know any better and haven’t heard comparisons. They just know what they know. However boy o boy they really have no idea. Not really their fault either. I think we’ve all been in that boat. This hobby is cool, because it’s non stop learning. However it requires a non stop budget too. 😂

    Definitely consider taking it one step further: consider some height speakers that play down to at least 40 Hz with good power. You will be surprised at the impact of some of the effects that most people are missing out on.

      I think there is value in this recommendation but I have not seen research suggesting there is much in the way of sub 100Hz (i.e.20Hz-100Hz) content going to the Atmos channels; nevertheless, I tend to agree with you because empirically speaking I do think it aids in enhancing the overall experience (and I definitely think running speakers with the ability to play down to say 60Hz (or a bit less) helps dramatically when it comes to the main surrounds).

    My 7.3.4 sound system consists of 6 SVS Ultra Bookshelf speakers (2 for the mains, 2 for the side channels, and 2 for the rears), an SVS Ultra Center speaker, 4 SVS Prime Elevation speakers ceiling mounted for Dolby Atmos, an SVS SB16-Ultra subwoofer in the rear and 2 SVS SB-3000 subwoofers up front. The system is powered by a Parasound Halo A52+ 5 channel amplifier powering the 5 bedlayer speakers and a Yamaha Aventage RX-A8A AVR powering the rear speakers and the 4 Prime Elevation speakers for Dolby Atmos. Dual AC Infinity AIRCOM T9's keep the amps cool, and all are connected to a Panamax M5400-PM Power Conditioner. The output power of this 14 speaker Living Room home theater system is 4,300 watts R.M.S.

      Nice setup! I am also enjoying my all SVS speaker setup but currently in the home theater renovation process. Eventually I will be adding two more subs as my current two PB1000 Pro subs are doing good but I want more 😬 evenly spread bass in our room (25' x 12.5' x 8')

    Nice , went with the buckeye NC502 for all my surrounds and the NCX500 for the front 3. Runs nice and cool, low noise floor and so much more space freed up on the rack. Win all around!

    Cingrats on the new addition!
    Thank you for speaking the truth about Atmos! I can’t believe how many people throw the smallest, cheapest speakers they can find on their ceiling and then complain that they're not impressed and Atmos doesn't do much.
    I couldn't imagine not having Atmos at this point. For me, it is a true game changer when it comes to my systems performance and the enjoyment I get from it.

    Buckeye is a great value. The NC252 puts out the same power as a typical AVR, but with all channels driven. Sometimes the atmos speakers are far away and have lower sensitivity so the NC502 may be a good option for those folks.

    Love my Buckeye amp. I replaced 3 Crown DSI amps used for LCR with a 3 channel Buckeye Purifi amp and the noise floor was lowered dramatically. Those speakers are now silent when no content is playing. Power for price is unmatched in my opinion. I have a VTV amp using the Ncore amp modules powering all of my other channels.

    I just got a Crown xls-1002 amp to power my final two speakers in a 7.2.6 system. The other speakers are on the way as my Rear-Height channels. Finally where I want to be except for my Sub upgrade. Eventually I plan to externally amp all 13 speakers. For now I'll put my Fronts on the Crown but eventually I'll put those on Outlaw Monoblocks and the rest will be powered by Crown amps.
    I tested the Crowns on my fronts and it did add some noticeable dynamics and a hair bit more detail. So I'm eager to hear what they can do for my surround channels and heights.

    Congrats. These amps are also on my short list for amp in any future upgrade I may do. For now I’m fine w what I have which is two Monolith 7s that are Class AB power but these things are massive tanks. but if I do move to a smaller and lighter option like class D. Good get George.

      Emotiva BasX A3 Power Amp does a good job for LCR speakers, use it myself amp is powerful, quiet and runs cold to the touch, so definitely not overheating like some amps

    Nice amp George! May ask how did you get your Crown amps to start when the processor is turned on? Is it a specific model that has 12v trigger? If so please share the model #, thanks!!

    • @GeorgeTheaterAtHome
      @GeorgeTheaterAtHome  5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I used a 12v activated power strip. The power cables from the Crown amps are plugged into the power strip and when the 12v signal is activated from the AVM70 it powers up the Crowns.

    In my non-scientific estimation, the quality of sound is 55% determined by the speaker, 35% from the amp and 10% from the processor. And that may be giving the speaker too much credit. The amp is critical and may be the most over-looked A/V component. Also, simply comparing wattage when shopping for an amp is not a great indicator as to which one sounds the best.

    As someone whose only experience of separates has been a 5.1 receiver and some cheap speakers which had the cable attached to them (bell wire?) I'm curious to know how you get the audio to split out from the source such as a 4K player? Do you have to plug the processors into the receiver? 🤔

    • @MyFatherLoves
      @MyFatherLoves 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Audio will travel through the HDMI cable from the 4K player into your receiver. So, it'll just be the one HDMI cable from each source (4K player, apple tv, xbox, whatever...) into your receiver. The receiver will then decode that audio and send it to your speakers.

  • @Music.Movies.67
    @Music.Movies.67 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    Thats a lot of power for speakers that don't have that much sound coming out of them for Atmos

    • @MyFatherLoves
      @MyFatherLoves 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Dolby Atmos does indeed send full-range content at 105db peaks at the main listening position if your in-ceiling (or on-ceiling) speakers can handle it and if the content calls for it. But there is a very short list of in-ceiling/on-ceiling speakers that can handle full range content at 105db peaks [and] do it cleanly. Kef R series, Perlisten S or R series, I believe RBH has one that can, Grimani Systems has quite a few that can, JTR has a model that can, etc... But the Kef R series can do it at full range which is nuts.....

    Do you think there amps are good enough to power my LCRs cause my front speakers are power hungry. Because my Polk S60s are 300 watts continuous and my kef Q650c is 150 watts continuous so I'm wondering what 3 channel amplifier would be the best option

    • @KforConstant
      @KforConstant 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hypex NC502MP 4-channel would output 350W to the 8 ohm impedance of the Polk s60

      This 4 channel amp should be able to drive your LCR’s with ease. It works just fine to use 3 channels on the LCR’s and leave one channel unused.
