My sister's father-in -law lived at Mitchelton. When he was a boy he and his mate used to put grease on the rails before the station and hear the loco wheels slip. Where the Mitchelton hotel is he said were Chinese market gardens. Once per month the farmers used to get professional ladies out from Brisbane for a weekend. The farmers might have moved back to China. I lived there until 1979. Heading out West or North West from the station there was rich volcanic soil where lettuces were grown on the left of the road but it's housing there now.

Yes I agree, there should be nothing stopping a locomotive hauled train, be it steam or diesel, from running into the new Ferny Grove station with a loco at both ends.
There were flyers and posters everywhere with the words of "Last Steam Train to Ferny Grove", that is the only reason why it appears in the title. I certainly hope that it wasn't the last one. Time will tell.

@LMatters1 There are other stations on the QR Network that have dead end platforms like what will occur at Ferny Grove, in recent years loco hauled trains have not visited these locations, so for the time being at least this was the last steam hauled or indeed loco hauled train to Ferny Grove

Steve Burrows Glen Waverley doesn’t have a run around and when the VR ran the Weedex weed train they send in a light engine to pull it out, nowadays it’s all done by HiRail trucks.

Gauntlet track for the standard gauge Countrylink. Too much gap between the platform and train if only using dual gauge.

@@lukenutterz Used to live at Mitchelton until 1979. I live in Central Qld. now and never heard of standard gauge track beyond Roma Street. Would someone be good enough to tell me more about standard gauge in Brisbane. I read that during the war there was a standard gauge goods line to the South West of Brisbane but have found no information about it. In Rockhampton, beside the river, I was surprised to see a short length of standard gauge in a park. Someone told me that it was built for racing hand-pushed trolleys during some sort of railway recreation event. There are still abandoned sidings further down river which were for coal trains for bunkering ships. One ran out to a crane in the river. The concrete base is still there. No ships come into Rocky now.

If I remember correctly it was the Blackwood St Chamber of Commerce in Mitchelton who chartered the train and the QR Heritage volunteers acted as the carriage attendants.

Awkward moment when a failed XPT stops it from doing a nice run around

A great video but why on earth would one make the bold claim that this would be the last steam train to Ferny Grove? No run around facilities at the terminus but so what? What about Cleveland, what about the possibility of a locomotive either end (they do it all the time in Melbourne). Please be careful about such 'dire' predictions guys!
