  • Here we have an Argos budget cordless drill driver sent in by Stuart from www.infinitebargains.co.uk
    Everything works apart from REVERSE.
    Let's see if it can be fixed.
    If you would like to support these videos, please click here / mymatevince
    Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

    I recently fixed a dewalt drill that was dropped in the water at work 2 years ago (work on boats down at a port) and managed to get it working it was covered with barnacles. Took apart everything. Used contact cleaner and re greased the gearbox. Clean up really nice. I was so amazed that it worked after 2 years in salt water. I always used Milwaukee but now I realize Dewalt is great too.

    The voltage is not relevant if you don't get the Amp, i have a Hilti 12 V that is dangerous to drill with because it ha no 45° cutoff so if you get stuck your hand follow.

    Just so you know, the torque selectors on drill drivers set a *maximum* torque, just in case you don't want to overtighten something, it can also save it from flying out of your hand when *you* aren't prepared to provide the necessary torque. It hasn't 'kicked in' unless you hear the jackhammer/impact driver sound and has no impact on the power of the motor. It works using a ball bearing detent system aVe has a video which showcased one of those a while ago
    also, to help anyone out there wondering, the 'drill bit' is called an auger

  • @Kevin-op3on

    Hi Vince! Awesome work on the drill! I was wondering what happened to your left index finger. It reminds me of the time I almost sliced part of my index finger off with a box cutter. It resulted in a small scar and a failed attempt at a homemade bow and arrow lol.

    This is why I like the Ozito brand here in Australia. It's only sold by 1 company, Bunnings, and because of that, it doesn't matter how old it is, whether you are the 1st owner or the 100th owner, whether you have the receipt or not, and what damage was done to it, they'll swap it out no questions asked, receipt not necessary.
    They do this, because they know they are the only company that sells it.

    Vince, Grease is a lubricant, not a sealant. so that will not stop dust and dirt at all, just gives the dust and dirt less space inside the button to go. Out of the ordinary fix, and a pretty easy fix as well, as less that can go wrong compared to something electrical like an xbox or something. possibly something the amature should start off trying to fix if faulty.

I had one similar and it was great the first month or two but then began cutting out exactly like that. So i did just that i frankenstein'd myself one and it had been great for over a year now

  • @StevenIngram
    @StevenIngram 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I saw that another commenter stated that they had the same drill, but that it lost power after a couple of months of use and would shut off just like this one. That begs the question, are there electronic/electrical components that can just "weaken?" For example, can a capacitor gradually lose its ability to store charge such that it drifts out of spec (but continues to function for a time)? Or how about if you used an under rated resistor and the current demand cooked it? Would that have a "weakening" effect? (Sorry if this is a dumb question.) Oh, and to be clear, when I say "weaken," I mean, it makes the drill produce less torque or be unable to deliver the demanded voltage (and subsequently produce less torque). Anyway, just a thought. :)

  • @codebeat4192
    @codebeat4192 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just found a drill in the dumpster, also a cheapy one. Guess what, battery dead. "Zhong Gang" batteries inside. What? "Zhong Gang" batteries. Oh Yeah!
    That is the problem with these cheapy things, the gear and construction can be pretty plausible however they save on battery quality. It just a standard motor with a standard gear mechanism, doesn't have to be that bad. They even sell it separately. The battery however is another story, 12x 1.2V 1200mah cells in series of crappy quality ..... Another bummer, you cannot buy a replacement for it, the reason people throw it away. Lesson for the unknown: That is what you have to look at when purchasing this kind of stuff, are you able to buy a replacement battery.
    Replaced the battery with li-ion 18650 laptop cells (plenty of room to do this) and a BMS (you can buy at e-bay or ali - cheap). Guess what, works great! I think, that is what you have to do with your drill, put quality cells in the battery to get an usable amount of power, current! Actually, the battery is the powerhouse.
    The problem with your drill is the (enormous) voltage drop at an amount of current, the power transistor inside turns off. It isn't a special safety feature, it is just a weak or not strong enough battery. You can notice this while drilling, it stops while still spinning at 'heavy 'lift. A safety feature kicks in only when it is unable to spin or get too hot. There is no special circuitry inside that indicates it has such feature. Just a motor with a gear mechanism, potentiometer, diode (to protect against wrong polarity) and a transistor or mosfet to power the motor by pushing the potentiometer.
    It is not always the brand of tool that makes a difference, Makita makes mistakes too, many repair videos available online. Also mostly "made in China". With all tools like this, it is not always guaranteed you get the best for money. Own a "Bauker" (what?) screwdriver for many years, very powerful only 10 euros, still going strong. HAD a "Bosch" screwdriver, 60 euros and no luck. There is a channel "Project Farm" testing many tools, very interesting. Quality of brands seems very different nowadays.

    Am I the only one spotting this looks like a Chinese knock off of Lidl's and Aldi's Parkside/Ferrex drills? I have my own Parkside in my hand, its very very close, even the battery profile is almost the same. I like both the cheaper brands from the supermarkets as they are made in Germany which usually means a higher quality than Shenzen but seeing this ones shell profile makes me think perhaps Lidls and Aldi have had the shells made in China and the factory that made them churned out a million for themselves filling with Shenzen's finest of motors, batteries and whatnot.
