Just received my handles and need to replace the passenger side too, it seems like the passenger sides always the first to break. Update: that was a pain in the ass, but I did it.
You're not missing anything..You're supposed to put the 90° side in too the whole ..u need to pass it first hole than pass it to the next hole..the first hole will secure it from moving out of position

I think this may be a crucial point. There’s another video, for d21 pick up, and he had it backwards. So he puts on the plastic thing from the inside, then pass it trough the handle.

Before you put in the handle take out that plastic tap because the tap folds on the metal 90 degree piece

Exactly. I literally just did it right now and that little plastic clip goes in the center and pushes the rod down not up
