- This video explains how to troubleshoot a Door Lock Mechanism that won't work with the key.
In this particular truck, the part that was causing the issue was a broken rod clip.
This part was not something we could find at any of the local Auto-part Stores, we ended up having to go to the Nissan Dealership to locate the broken part.
The part numbers for the broken rod clip are:
8053434A05 : Plate
8055234A00 : Holder

I have a 1990 Nissan Pathfinder and this was the only video I could find for this repair. Although you posted it 8 years ago, it's still relevant for older models today. Thanks
I've been a Nissan Hardbody buff for over 20 years. What a fantastic helpful video this is, right down to how to use part #'s!!
Thank you soooo much!
Here it is in 2020 and your video is the first one I found that shows the entire technique for repairing a Nissan with a manual lock problem. Thank you for posting. You gave me what I need to attempt this repair. Thank you.
2024 still the only one i found
Excellent video and explanation. I have exactly the same problem on my Nissan and have lived with it for a few weeks. After watching I am ready to fix the lock this week. (I have already had to replace the handles and their mechanisms a few times--usually because one or another plastic part broke.) Thank you for making the video, for posting the parts numbers and for so clearly showing how to install the parts.
Thank you for posting, this just happened to my 1996 D21 XE pickup this week. I took my panel of looked inside but had no idea how it was supposed to work. I was ready to take the other door panel off but I said let`s check TH-cam first and here you go. Thanks so much for the excellent video.
Thank you. I watch another of videos on various issues for many different vehicles. You video is among the best. Short, concise with clear instructions and camera use. We'll done. I subscribed for these reasons.
A life saver! Thorough and to the point. My 97 hardbody driver side just did the same thing today.
Thank you for adding the part numbers. You just made my day easy!
James Tyson thanks cn i order that two small plastic pieces
Thanks for the part numbers! Exactly what I needed. Already had the same problem diagnosed and open and made myself a plastic fitting with a Dremel to get going but tolerances are fine and it's jamming and $3 gets me that little yellow part! And it was all about knowing how to describe it and what to call it!
I just did this sort of repair on both doors of my D21. A few pointers from my experience.
After removing the crank handle by puling that clip, put the clip back onto the handle. This prevents losing it. When you go to reinstall the handle, just push it on. No need to remove the clip again and put it on with the crank handle in place.
Those clips that hold the door panel to the door are a PITA. I got a panel clip pliers from Harbor Freight, which helped, but I had to modify it a bit because the two jaws did not line up properly and they weren't both sharp enough to slide under the panel and clip. A few minutes work with a propane torch and a pliers, to rebend one jaw, and on a grinder, to sharpen them, fixed that. A working tool makes the job easy, but you're probably going to want to have some spare clips around. I suggest ebay as a source of those, as they're $$ at the auto parts store, if you can even find what you need.
If it's cold, it's useful to warm plastic parts with a hair dryer before popping them apart. Plastic is much more flexible when warm than when cold.
My problem was different from the one in this video. Both outside handles had broken, and for a while it looked like I might get locked out of the truck if I weren't careful. What I discovered when replacing the handle is that I could not fit the internal parts together without first removing the three screws on the vertical edge of the door that hold the latch mechanism in place. No need to remove the latch, just let it drop about 1/2 inch, and then you can fit the internal parts together -- one part from the outside handle nests into one from the latch.
FWIW: Around 8:26 on the video you can see the inside of the keylock. Note that flat metal plate (with a lip in the foreground) that holds the keylock in place. This is very easy to remove and replace. I suspect that, in the factory, this entire assembly was installed at once, not piecemeal. IIRC, the entire mechanism can be withdrawn (to the outside) through the hole the keylock mounts in. I did have it out on one door, and had no trouble reinstalling it, but I didn't take notes.
Recently I've been using the trick of crazy glue + baking soda to repair or build up broken plastic parts. (There's lots of info on this trick on TH-cam.) I don't know whether that broken part in this lock mechanism could have been fixed that way, but it might be worth a try -- it's almost free, and there's no drying time for the repair.
I spend 3 hrs trying to snap the yellow part w the white pin till I have up and finished viewing your vid then I saw the yellow part goes snap without the pin. I'm glad I didn't break the part. I'll get to it tomorrow God willing. I done this before 5 months ago for passanger side I'm doing the drivers side now.
Big help I'm fixing same on the passanger side. Gives me confidence and part number big plus! God bless you my friend!
Really happy to have a working door lock again!! Thanks!
It was a tight place to get in and see the clip and I was able to to replace the rod clip on a second try. Thank you Howstuffinmycarworks.
Thanks from Japan. I had the exact same problem, and you saved me from breaking anything. Kudos. Thanks!!
Great video, thank you. Replaced broken driver's(RHS) side today, and was going to do passenger side but it seems some previous owner, in their wisdom, has glued the window winder to the shaft.
The same thing can be achieved using two zip ties. one inside the lever hole [tight fit] and a zip tie that goes though that tie wrapped around that white plastic part [loose fit]. Thanks for the part number.
Make us a video !! :)
^william is eight
I mean *right!
Still won't last over time with cold weather they break
Awesome man thank you for sharing the steps to take my driver side door just stopped locking/unlocking 😊
Thank you for making this video. I now have two working doors on my truck.
Great video. Very detailed, great camera angle you can see everything going on. Plus the part number for the parts. Thank you. Need to work on mine with same problem
Outstanding Job Sir! This was the very same problem I had with my 91 niss d21 p/u. Thanks Soo Much and keep up the Good Work!!
Great video man! Very concise and quick.
i had this problem with mine.I just took the part out and put a hanger wire and that did the trick.
Great video, understand completely, got the right parts, now the dreaded install...
Cheers from New Zealand. Exact job needs doing on my WBY TD27 (D21). Perfect man, thanks again.
Just finished, got the parts in the mail yesterday, left off the little plastic washers, was a bit of a pain to get back on but the jobs done, works and doesn't interfere with the remote lock/unlock/alarm. They disabled them when they put in the alarm with the remote access, possibly to make it harder for thieves but that is not the way to get in to these trucks so really, a waste of time disabling the mechanisms, left the passenger side disabled. Cheers again.
Great video just what I needed
Exactly what I needed. Thanks dude! Great video.
Or go to the parts store and get 'dorman door lock clip assortment' for about $4. It doesn't have an exact replacement but it does have a black rod clip I think is common for chevy that fits the hole and the rod perfectly. I could never get it to work by installing the rod clip first. I don't how you did that and it's not in the video, but I could never get it installed that way. Instead, I assembled the rod clip with the lock arm first, then sitting on a garage stool I was able to line up the assembly to the hole on the door lock and then push the rod clip in with one hand thru the bottom of the door frame and use a flashlight with the other hand thru the top so I could see what I was doing. It takes some practice but once you get the rod clip inserted into the hole then the whole bracket should stay in place for you so you can mount it to the door lock with the 'c' clip. The hard part is getting the rod clip into the hole. I used a bit of electrical tape jammed into the plastic bracket to keep the rod clip from twisting sideways. Once it's installed and you test the lock a few times, the tape should just fall out.
Thank you! My exact problem also. I love my 93' Nissan D21 Pickup.
Great video man! Your video totally helped me out and was spot on! 🤙

Nice. Just happened to my hardbody. Ez fix. Thanks for the video.
Thanks didn’t have my flashlight. Thanks for the part numbers also,
Thanks man, very helpful.
thank you for this very helpful
Nice video, thanks. This part seems to have a rubbish design. I have my D21 for13 years, and mine just broke for the third time. 4th time replacing it now. I am going to have to scavenge the one off the passenger door for now to make this work till we can get spares. Lucky mine has central locking which works off the driver door key. This could however be the reason mine is not lasting very long because it has to push the central locking actuator and the normal lock which is putting additional strain on that part. I will take some measurements and see if we can do a 3D print of this part. But testing time will be long to see if it outlasts the Nissan part.
Thank you
Thanks so much for your help
Nicely done. But how to fix broken lock mechanism when the door is locked and won't come open?
Use a slim Jim or coat hanger or something and pull up on the rod. Maybe just call roadside and see if they can get it unlocked if you have AAA maybe
Awesome Job.
Thank you for this video

I have same problem with my 90 Nissan D21 door lock . Question I want to leave off my door panel after I get it fixed , would that be ok to do ? I suspect more door lock problems because the little plastic dimestore pieces will probably brake off again and again . Please respond about leaving off door panel .

What is the name of the white piece that the rod hold goes into? I'm missing one of mine..
Did you even find what its called or anywhere they sell them ?
Im hoping if i can get a part number or name to get because i still do not know where to get one. Or one the smaller white pieces that goes into the yellow one. All of these tiny parts are so hard to find.
how do you get the c clip out?
I used a small flat blade screwdriver.
How did u remove the c clip holding it
I levered mine out with a screw driver and fished it out of the door well using a recovery magnet. Levered it back on OK too. There are C-clip removal tools available.
1998..hmm I have 1991. Those part numbers say they wont fit my truck..
Nissan dealer can give you the part number for your 91. Most likely they stock it. I have replaced mine on my '91 at least 4 times. PITA (thus the reason I was looking at this video for an easier way) but it solves the problem.
Not a 1998. 1992-94 model.
both of them are broke on my 97 nissan; garbage ass design
ebay sells the parts
Super helpful. Thanks
Very helpful. Thanks.
