    At 635BHP, few have ever left a GT63S and said: that needs more power. Except maybe AMG, who took the world’s fastest 4 seat 4 door on the ring, and gave it an F1 derived 843 BHP hybrid power train.
    This is the GT63S E Performance, carrying the same model designation as Lewis and George’s F1 car, it is the first car from AMG we get to drive that gives us a glimpse at every significant future car, which will almost all make use of the P3 Hybrid system this car has.
    I’ll show you the tech, the new interior driver controls, the insane mix of EV and V8 sound, before we launch control the car onto Spanish roads and see what the future looks like.
    The big flagship cars by #AMG coming in this new generation are almost all going to pair combustion with electric power in some form. The most powerful of those will use the type of system this GT63S E is going to show us in full force today!
    That includes the top flagship versions of the new SL, S63 and every other big name to follow. As well as the next C63 and GLC63 with a 4 cylinder version, using even more AMG ONE hypercar tech.
    So what is this P3 Hybrid? It pairs an AMG combustion engine with a hybrid system, developed with F1 and the Project one. This GT uses the awesome 4.0 AMG V8.
    An engine that when used in isolation gives the current #MercedesAMG GT63S 635BHP and a 0-60 of 3.2 seconds.
    This hybrid V8 GT, eclipses this with System power of up 843 BHP, 1400NM of torque, and zero-60 of 2.9 seconds
    So, how does it all work?
    First the engine changes: we have the same 4.0 V8. Where they added a belt-driven starter-alternator (BSG) which combines the alternator and starter in one component, and gives an output of 14 hp.
    Then the big and clever change : the Electric Drive Unit or EDU. This is the electric motor, unlike having the electric motor in-between the combustion engine and transmission which is more typical, AMG have installed a super clever unit on the rear axle instead!
    This compact unit houses some key things within it, firstly: the E-Motor itself which is a permanently excited one. There is also a 2 speed transmission where the 2nd gear is for higher speeds and finally a more familiar limited slip differential. Power is managed in a totally variable way, meaning both ICE and Electrical power can be sent to any wheel as required. In this set up, the EDU operates independently of the transmission, so it’s more efficient.
    Theres a full EV mode possible too up to 130 km/h, it’s normally rear-wheel drive, but power can be sent to the front wheels via the cardan and drive shafts
    Next: The AMG Performance battery! This is an always alive system, directly out of F1, and delveloped by High Performance Powertrains (HPP) Formula 1 engine forge in Brixworth and Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach. Tech is shared with the HyperCar ONE.
    This is a 400VOLT battery, with 560 cells and can provide continuous power of 93BHP, Or 201 BHP at peak for 10 seconds! This is added to the V8 engine’s base power!
    It weighs 89KG which gives it a power to weight density of 1.7kw, which is double that of traditionally cooled systems.
    The entire system adds around 200KG weight compared to the GT63S.
    The new SL seems like it’ll benefit from a similar system, and the same is true of the upcoming S63. I wonder if the upcoming new gen of the GT 2 door will get it too? Hmm.
    Will it be worth it? We’ll find out today.

    They definitely need to design their next generation of cars from the ground up with this hybrid system in mind. That way they can better integrate it without the car becoming too overweight, make the packaging more efficient and no silly charger placements. Say what you want about hybrid tech and down sizing of engines, this stuff is cool as hell and here to stay.

But I think the time has come to upgrade to the e63s as the c63s has started to appreciate here in Toronto so I’ll be selling it for a great price with a renntech r3 tune on it. The brand new e63s should be here in the summer so super excited! I’m looking forward to a new S63 would be nice but im not so happy with the downsized c63 cylinders. No thank you to any of these AMG hybrids... Like the ownership costs after warranty weren't already high enough on an AMG....I can only imagine what these things with a much more complicated hybrid system would cost to fix down the road. Not to mention it completely ruins the whole point of having an ICE powered AMG. They should have just made the normal gas variants for as long as possible then release the EQ versions which are inevitable anyway.

    A tune can put an AMG GT63S close to 750hp, turbo upgrades and other goodies would add another 150hp to 250hp. This electrification being so small with low range is just added weight. If people want a silent vehicle, they get an EV, if they want an obnoxiously loud sports car they go for the AMG. As much as I like this car, i'd know that if i ever was able to afford one i'd know the ev side of it is only really useful for not waking up the neighbors leaving the house, instant torque, and a smoother start/stop system. I wish they added a larger battery pack and sacrificed storage or something. No need for the second transmission for the EV, the engine take over high speeds and high RPM...

Its a great combination but doesn't push the car faster than the non-hybrid version of the Turbo S, And also most people paying 200K Euro for a car doesn't really care about the few K anual emission tax and this is the main reason these manufacturers swap a battery in all cars now.

It is a new car developed from the ground up, which should've opened up the possibility to have the charge port on the fender. But then when you look at pics of the upcoming S63 hybrid, its charging port is on the left fender...

    I think I would just go with the regular non hybrid version or just go full electric at this point with an RS etron gt, taycan turbo or turbo s and go as fast or even faster (in the turbo s) than this car. This AMG hybrid and the taycan/etron gt weigh the same but the taycan/etron gt has better balance and lower center of gravity and will handle better (and look better).... Think this car only makes sense if you want that electric boost but you have to commute long distances without any charging infrastructure.

    Performance E-hybrids are such a niche market segment, I wonder why Mercedes/AMG is investing in it. Porsche is selling hybrid models since 2011 (plug-in since 2013?), but what you see is, that Panamera sales took a hard hit with the SOP of the pure BEV Taycan. I can see sports cars like the Ferrari SF90 or a RS hybrid model of the 911, but 4-door luxury sedans will go pure BEV by 2025-30.

      I know it’s regulations etc, so i get it has to be quieter but.. a soft limiter? Man.. that’s such an Audi thing to do. Doesn’t fit an AMG or BMW M.

    • @wasdwasdwwasd
      @wasdwasdwwasd 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That can't be that often, perhaps a few times a month max? Unfortunately I just don't think enough owners do that for them to avoid putting a soft limiter in. That being said I find cars sound best under load.

    • @Raziel_91
      @Raziel_91 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@wasdwasdwwasd it actually happens kinda often - like, groceries, young kids.. especially when you have boys pulling up their phones and recording you, i like to give them a rev or occasionally a little ride etc.
      Yeah, sure, i don’t disagree with you, but damn, i like being able to at least rev it when i want. It’s that extra control that i hate - i never wanted to ever buy an audi because the extra childs control (under-steer, unable to fully turn off TC, Rev-limiters etc) - so i really hate how the brand new AMG’s now also are getting these stupid limiters.. just leave it alone?

    I’ll stick with my Eurocharged tuned GLC63 for 650hp and a 3 second 0-60. The thought of adding nearly 500lbs of weight to get that extra power and 17 miles of EV range is ridiculous. If you want EV power buy a Tesla to compliment your garage and use it as your daily, that’s what I did. If that isn’t in your budget then you have to make your choice between a V8 noise or environmentally friendly. For the price of this car you could have an E63S and Tesla Model 3. Just WOW!

    Love the review, very happy to see some brutal honesty. Quite a few head scratchers with this car: all that extra power over the GT63s but only 0.2 seconds quicker to 60? Extra weight that ruins the handling? Absolutely baffling spot for the charging port? Call me a cynic, but ever since Tobias Moers left, Mercedes-AMG seems to be going downhill.
