      With joy, my home, I now behold thee,
      and gladly greet thy smiling meadows;
      now I lay down my pilgrim's staff,
      for, submissive to God, I have made my pilgrimage.
      By atonement and repentance I have made my peace
      with the Lord, to whom my heart bows down,
      who has crowned my remorse with blessing,
      the Lord to whom I raise my song.
      The grace of salvation is granted to the penitent,
      who shall enter into the peace of heaven!
      Hell and death cannot affright him,
      therefore will I praise God all the days of my life.
      Halleluja for evermore!

    Enjoying this video now in 2022 and reading the comments I have nothing more to add except to say that I am grateful that this wonderful performance is still available for us to enjoy nine years afterwards and hopefully into the future. It is especially encouraging that the best European classical music has captured the hearts and minds of people everywhere.

    • @Alex-uy7pc
      @Alex-uy7pc ปีที่แล้ว +2

      European isnt the classification that matters here, this wouldn't have ever happened without Christianity. The best artwork of every genre is only achievable though Christ.
      I realize how cringe this may sound to some, but it's actually true if you have the ability to be honest, and a soul that's not degenerated enough to still see it.

    • @williamstringer6519
      @williamstringer6519 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Alex-uy7pc Whereas I can appreciate the connection between this beautiful music and the prayerful lyrics, nevertheless the music was written by a European, and so to classify it as European music is valid. Incidentally, Wagner himself was atheist and also anti-Jewish, so his personal connection with the religious theme here is problematic to say the least. There is an enormous amount of beautiful music with absolutely no connection with religious thought, so your view is quite subjective.

    • @hermannblock4597
      @hermannblock4597 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@williamstringer6519 I have to agree with Mr. Alex. Wagner may not have been a Catholic churchgoer, but he comes from a Christian upbringing and society, he comes from the heartland of the Christian West. This is also shown by the text, which is about the pilgrimage to the eternal, spiritual homeland in accordance with God, and that was understood in the Christian Occident to Jesus Christ.
      As an adult, many become atheists in the meantime, including Richard Wagner, because the church, when things are going well, only gives spiritual nourishment from its mother's milk. However, his music shows that he must have been given heavenly fare.

    • @williamstringer6519
      @williamstringer6519 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@hermannblock4597 Of course to add to the mix, most of Wagner's operas were based on a search for the sacred through tales involving ancient Germanic gods, so although his works have strong spiritual themes, they were not exclusively Christian.

    • @hermannblock4597
      @hermannblock4597 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@williamstringer6519 I agree with you unreservedly. It was and is unfortunately the case that the Christian doctrine of love was only imparted to a small extent by the official churches and therefore Wagner and many other people sought their salvation in the old Germanic gods. As a result, he had little luck in his worldly affairs

    Brilliant. Made me cry. It also made my mother cry many decades ago. She loved Wagner and this was one of the few records to play on our old Dansette record player in the 1960's. It is such great sadness that Wagners music is tainted by it's association with Fascism (deserved or not), and that also made my family members cry in the 1930's-1940's. I cant help but love the music and hate the fascism.

    the Lord to whom I raise my song.
    The grace of salvation is granted to the penitent,
    who shall enter into the peace of heaven!
    Hell and death cannot affright him,
    therefore will I praise God all the days of my life.
    Halleluja for evermore!
    With joy, my home, I now behold thee,
    and gladly greet thy smiling meadows;
    now I lay down my pilgrim's staff …"
