      The red door is the color that recruiters had around the time of the Vietnam War. I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes is in reference to the women who would wear all white in the summer their summer clothes. I see people turn their heads and quickly look away is a reference to how the troops were treated when they came home. The entire song is about the war in Vietnam!

      To me it always seemed like the story of a man who had given up on love and life. Either because it never presented itself or overexposure. But your interpretation is more sound.

    Really digging your concept of teaching colliquial English through popular music.
    Man, you remind me of my uncle Chris Mooney (spitting image, but he had a more Irish-American accent). Did he ever teach you? (American forces in Germany, University of California, his subject was history)? He "is late" now. For his last Christmas he sent friends & family a card with the message "the future is bright" (meaning he knew he would be in heaven "in the light" soon). It's those of us left behind who feel "paint it black" until the shock wears off and we can find the energy again to think the way he thought (that bit takes time). God bless you, and keep on teaching English as it is actually used.

      Thanks again Patricia! haha, that's funny. Sounds like a special guy. At least he lives on in your memories! Yes, we need to take the right attitude that every day is a gift. I read a book recently called "Tuesdays with Morrie", about a student who interviews his old teacher who is slowly coming to the end of his life, and he has an amazing attitude to the situation. Anyway, thanks again, take care!

    When I was younger I always associated this song with paint and painting and thought that's what it was about! I guess it is just a metaphor for someone feeling sad and depressed but ever since I heard GOB's cover of this song in the 2004 adaption of Stephen King's Salem's Lot, I always associate this song with Stephen King novels and movies based on them and I seriously always think of this song when I watch Carrie and how she takes her revenge with her powers at the prom after having pigs blood spilled on her and how she uses her powers against everyone at prom! I am also a musician and this is one of my favorite songs to cover in my repertoire!

    • @EnglishBGood
      @EnglishBGood  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, this song has been used in loads of movies so I can imagine how it takes you back to them. I also used to literally think of someone painting everything black. Funny when you go a bit deeper you realize that you haven’t paid such close attention. I naturally focus on the music more than the lyrics. Cracking track to play. Glad to hear from a fellow musician. Thanks for the comment!!

      I can see why you say that as it really fits, apart from the line “My love will laugh with me

The song was released in ‘66 which is a year after the US got involved in Vietnam so I’m not sure how many veterans had come back by then... it’s also been used in quite a few Vietnam tv docs and movies so I always used to associate it with Vietnam myself.
