We emigrated during the pandemic (South Africa to New Zealand)

  • Permanently moving from one country to another is always difficult, but our emigration coincided with Covid lockdowns in both South Africa (our home) and New Zealand (our new home)!
    Moving overseas was something we decided to do in 2019, at which point we began the lengthy process of finding jobs, acquiring the necessary documentation and applying for visas. When the Covid19 pandemic prompted a lockdown in South Africa in March 2020 we kept going, packing up the house, selling the cars and putting our Durban house on the market.
    We managed to sell our house, and most of our belongings, packing the rest onto a crate to New Zealand. Temporarily homeless, we moved to Pretoria to try and get flights. Only repatriation flights were allowed to exit South Africa, and we had Qantas, Emirates and SAA cancel on us, before in desperation we bought two business class tickets on Qatar via Doha.

    • @OwenSaysGo
      @OwenSaysGo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Daniel, thanks for watching! NZ is a great place, if you are thinking of emigrating, I suggest you start with the INZ (immigration new zealand) website, they have tons of information. It can be a bit overwhelming so probably also a good idea to join some of the SA to NZ facebook groups, lots of people there giving advice on the best way to do it yourself, or the best agents to use to help you through the process.

    • @OwenSaysGo
      @OwenSaysGo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Mikey, good question! There are a lot of us here... I think it's a combination of the immigration policies of NZ that make it quite easy for South Africans to move here, and they have need of skilled immigrants. The climate and culture in NZ are close enough to SA that we fit in here.
