DUDE I felt your pain on that epoxy pour. Never have had anything go that bad but I have had my hand full of issues in the past. Nice work reviving it. RIP hand planer haha!

I love the honesty that so many woodworking projects...um..."season" for a couple of years in the shop somewhere before getting finished.

Ya for real, so many great ideas go into the shed to die. I was actually able to recover them.

Here I thought wifey would would be getting an upgrade. But you did put in ALL that work and dealt with that chaos mess so, makes sense to have it as a reminder in the shop to keep going. And it's gorgeous 😍!

Seeing the epoxy not cure properly was super painful, glad you were able to salvage it! The only time I've had a similar experience was working at Boston Whaler building boats, an entire section of fiberglass resin didn't cure. Worked an extra 6 hours that night.

I don't know why I haven't thought about just covering the ugly door in my shop before. That is a fantastic idea and it came out great (despite the drama)!

Thanks. Ya, I just wanted something inspiring instead of that organic builder grade door. I love the way it turned out.

God bless you for following through with this project especially after the epoxy issue. I give you a lot of credit there and what a magnificent piece it turned out to be. I’ve just recently filled some voids in a spalted maple piece to where the epoxy penetrated some of the punky wood as well. A plus in stabilizing the wood but has thrown me off on the finishing stage. These areas where it has penetrated are much darker . Even though spalted is filled with this type of presence it’s a bit to much. Any suggestions? I’ve only sanded to 120 so far but hate to take off any more of the thickness I’m left with. I’m looking for something to even it out as much as possible.

I am afraid that is sort of a consequence of punky wood. You could try a penetrating epoxy or a wet coat epoxy finish over the whole thing.

Ouch! You probably could have rented time at a carpenters shot on their wide belt sander. Love the colors!! Really makes the spalting stand out!

I tried to rent space at a cabinet shop and my local guild doesn't have a large format sander yet...I made do.

Would this work for an exterior door

  • @LokiEklipse

Dude tough break on the epoxy, If my experience is anything to go by I'd say you probably didn't mix the epoxy properly, don't use a stick, get a paddle mixer for your drill, and REALLY go to town on it, you can't over mix! Good result either way! :D

I think I poured too deep on too warm of a day and it overthermed.

I took the trim off to put the barn door on. I know it was a totally unneccesary project, but it was fun and I love it.

Ah man the pain watching you scrape that eppoxy out. Just after an estimate of the cost of your eppoxy pour if you can remember
