The FCC site is helpful but not super accurate.
I get a bunch of channels that are not shown on there.
Some of the channels they say I should get are over the hill from me.
A bit of advice for people is to get a set of rabbit ears at the thrift store and give it a try. It costs you very little and for most people a scan will find some stations. It then becomes a question of how much effort is needed to get the stations you care about.

A useful rule when looking at reviews of antennas is: I the range claim is over about 80 miles, the review is not accurate and the antenna is likely to be junk.
Also: There is no such thing as an "HD antenna". A set of rabbit ears from the 1970s will pick up HD signals just fine. It is the TV or tuner that does the decoding and that is where the smarts are.

There sort of are HDTV antenna differences from ATSC antennas, but that has to do with other tech and political changes as much as digital modulation.
In markets with no more VHF, UHF only panel antennas with high gain and low directionality often work well.
There is no more need for low band VHF in most markets.
Amplifiers need to handle intermod from tight channel packing, and cell usage on frequencies formerly in TV bands, but no longer need the wide dynamic range for distant and close transmitters if the user is focused on one or two antenna farms FCC mandated to be closely colocated, unlike former ATSC site spacing rules. Cell band cutoff filters are often needed, and their spec's have moved down again as 600 band joins 700 band.
Call carriers are harded to identify as to conflicts, as licensing of them has changed from frequency cluster and specific tower sites, to general allocations over large regions, with 5G often implemented with massive numbers of short range sites.
Where I currently am in a rural Chesapeake Bay site within distant fringe reach of Norfolk, Richmond, DC, and sometimes parts of MD or NC, and "ideal antenna" is really at least 3 antennas and a network of combiners, filters, and amps, with a high gain UHF panel aimed towards each less extreme distance fringe transmitter cluster, and a high VHF plus UHF yagi (like an older extreme fringe yagi with the lower end boom elements removed, and mounting point rebalanced) on a rotor, on an absurdly high tower to get over 80-120 foot trees.
No one's going to order that based on an online site, though the better sites Tyler discusses do help a lot trying to track which actual RF signals are being sent from where, and who's using which for NTSC 1 or 3 primary or subchannels and what virtual identities (but those change in ways few sites keep updated well).
Also, remember physical FM traps on yagis, ahead of amp filters, as amp gain can substitute for more antenna gain with NTSC, as AM noise isn't an issue any more (often addressed with high directionality for gain and interference rejection), but overload and intermod and potential Channel 12 harmonic generation in badly installed amps can be serious problems.
Most people live in areas with fewer critical issues, and where two UHFpanels with cell filters and mediocre amps if any, into a combiner, work better than a fancier antenna and rotor, without the nuisance or conflicts if feeding multiple tuners.

@@lokiva8540 Amplifiers are really a different topic than the antennas. It, however is true that you almost have to work at it to make an amplifier mess up a signal badly enough to make trouble for TV signals. Any competent design of amplifier from the analog age will work on todays signals.

    • @lokiva8540
      @lokiva8540 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@kensmith5694 That claim is flat out wrong, as it's overgeneralized and has exceptions that make it falsifiable, due to the issues previouosly mentioned.
All ATSC era VU amplifiers cover a frequency range wider than the truncated post-auction TV bands. Some older ones that are VHF only are useless for most NTSC systems. Some crappy ones overload too easily, or have intermod susceptibility tighter channel packing aggravates.
Generally it's better to think in terms of "antenna systems" than antenna hardware alone, as mounting, coax or other transmission line, weather and lightning management, gain structures, directionality, etc, all have to work in the needed application. One nice element mismatched to needeed parameters or crippled with other problems isn't desirable even if it's a really nice antenna but for different applications.
Rebar, distributed ground systems, nitrogen cylinders or air driers and compressors, ice protective cages, and tower segments equivalent to scale model range tested models, can all be part of antenna systems, along with deicers, radomes, etc., albeit more common to commercial facilities.
How many people are aware that in cable systems that play nice with area broadcasters, that most do but some have long term corporate feuds, the cable signal is usually a private feed, historically on coax but these days often as IP over fiber, and that OTA antennas are used for backup or distant stations and not primary local channel feeds? IOW, it's best to reduce use of transmitters and receivers where possible, both for system quality and reliability.

@@lokiva8540 You are not correct and you appear to be attempting to baffle people with technical jargon.
A crappy design does exist but they are not all that common.
Intermodulation makes frequencies at the sum and difference frequencies for the inputs and both the sum and difference will tend to be out of band so nobody will notice them.
The channels are not actually more tightly packed than what many people had in the past all the way back to analog days. I can remember channels 2-5 all being used.
I may address the rest later but clearly a set of rabbit ears working fine to receive the ATSC is a perfect counter example.
On my channel I show that a stewpot will work as an antenna.

Antenna Man - the wife and I decided to cut the cord. Right now I'm streaming Frndly and we're using rabbit ears on several TV's. Interestingly, you briefly showed a map of where I live on this clip. We live right outside of the little town of Bessemer - southwest of New Castle, PA. We had a huge Antenna that we had installed over 25 years ago that we had removed when we had a new roof installed last fall. We also had Direct TV which we decided to get rid of several years back. More recently, we suscribed to our local Comcast cable to allow my daughter and wife to more effectively stream over the internet during Covid as both are educators. The fellas that installed it did an excellent job with the wiring and even came back to correct the wiring for the big outdoor Antenna which we still had up. We decided to cut the cable cord as mentioned at the beginning of this comment since prices just kept going up and up! And I had the Amish fellas that did the roof save the wiring which I feel is in very good condition. They wrapped it up and tucked it in - up in the northwest corner of our second story. I say all of this to find out what is a solid smaller Antenna that I could install up in that northwest corner of the house. We just need to point it toward Youngstown, OH to get the local networks and perhaps a few more channels. If need be, I can subscribe to your website but really all I need is a reputable small Antenna brand recommendation. Since you're in PA, would you know or could you recommend someone to help install it. I just turned 65 and climbing up on ladders to install antennas might be a little more than I care to tackle.

Tyler's recommendation for the Range Xperts XPS-1500 was spot on. I have always lived about 60 miles from the nearest TV stations, and at half the size, it beats out 10' - 12' boom antennas from name brand manufacturers. After looking up Antennaweb I thought I would be lucky to get a dozen channels, but with this jewel, I get 50, and two of them (CW,ABC) are now low power. I spent half the money, and got more reliable channels than I have ever had. On a side note, I am curious why the FCC would allow major networks to go low power in a semi rural community, because my old system would not have picked up these two networks despite the size and cost of it.

I saw one on Amazon that claimed a 928 mile range. That is stupid. An transmitter is sending a signal line of sight, it doesn't follow curvature of the earth. Higher your antenna, further you can receive a signal. Most TV antenna reception is about 20 miles, a roof mounted antenna will get 30 to 40 miles. Also, transmitter direction falls into the equation, that is why you may have to aim your antenna to a watchable signal. Digital is a lot more sensitive to antenna aiming then analog was.

There was a little sporadic pixelation at first, a few duplicate channels, but it's stopped now. Also have a dozen+ new channels in addition to what I had with basic paid cable. (Although I lost TBS. Meh...) That said, indoor antennas can be a very worthy tech investment, agree, & it doesn't hurt to try one. Super happy that I did :)

Question: Offtopic: Can Plex or something else be configured as an online TV guide for Android TV for OTA antenna channels? Using my antenna for tuning, I would like a channel guide where I can see the channel lineup (from the TV, not a mobile app) to allow me to select channels from the TV screen? Unlike LG and Samsung, Hisense has no Live channels configured to the antenna channels. I do not have a Homerun box or Zapper Box, etc., because I do not require DVR and those devices, especially Zapper Box, do not market a device absent the added cost for a DVR. I just need the guide. (I am not a full cord cutter. I have YTTV and other streaming apps. But I like some OTA channels, but lack a visual guide on my TV screen for OTA channels.) I tried the HomeWorx box, but the guide is way too plain. There's no tradition full guide, much less any graphics.

I suggest a set of rabbit ears like folks used back in the 1970s bought from a thrift store for about $10. You may also need to buy a "balun" to adapt from twinlead to the coax cable.
The nice thing about it is that they date from so long ago, you can claim to be going retro on purpose.
Rabbit ears can be adjusted and since they sit on something, you can rotate them. This will let you optimize of the station you are watching.

Rabbitears site is good, and by far most accurate, albeit not perfect. In a good way, where I used to live it showed stations that were rated as "Poor", yet got 82% with an indoor antenna. However, I've seen it VERY RARELY go the other way where it said TV 40 in Springfield, MA can be picked up in "Radio-Free" Athol, MA. Nope. If a signal meter can pick up and display strength in the very low single percent range, that's what you got. More often than not I'd say it's very good. I intentionally picked addresses with very different reception abilities, and it reflected them all, just that one rare Athol incident. Nothing's perfect. :)

Highly doubt that, a good antenna is only one of multiple variables to good reception. Here is some common things you need for good reception
      1. A Well-built, quality antenna designed for the distance between you and the towers.
      2. Good placement, facing the broadcast towers with good angle and no obstructions such as walls or trees.
      3. A good TV tuner which can decode lower quality signals
      4. A high quality coax cable, the thinner and longer the cable, the more the signal will drop.
I will bet that the antenna you got was good but something was wrong on steps 2 - 4 which made you falsely believe that the antenna was at fault.
