I remember having this performance recorded on VHS and listening to it over and over in mid 80s. It makes me very emotional as it brings back many memories, of lovely people who enjoyed watching it with me, and who are now long gone...
Simple Minds is a powerhouse 80's band with great stage presence. This video says it all; great vocals, guitar, synth and drums. Todays music isn't even in the same galaxy.
Fun to see the boys--and Ms. Robin Clark--cut loose on this version of a classic good enough to put a tear in my eye. For some reason I feel a tremendous NOSTALGIA--lost youth, perhaps?--whenever I hear it.
Greatest band off the 80's. I've saw this show three times in Belgium! I'll never forget these moments. Thanks Jim, Charlie, Mel, Robin and Michael Mc Neal....
Ah, brings back memories of their appearance at Mesa Amphitheater on April 13, 1986. It was an excellent show and experience. When I hear select Simple Minds songs from "Once Upon a Time" I can see them on stage. There was a hi-rise hotel on the southeast corner of the amphitheater and I remember seeing the spotlights from the stage shining on the hotel. The show was an experience because of the intimate feel of the venue.
I recorded this concert on MTV back in 1987, and I could not stop playing this song over and over again. Next, I got it off of Napster before the crackdown, and now it's on TH-cam, and I still can't stop playing this song over and over again. This version sounds so much better than the album track, as the synthesizers are more up front. This 1985 concert from The Ahoy in Rotterdam is the Simple Minds at their very best, and this is the very best song from that concert. Amazing!!
I laugh whenever I read that they sold out on this record, instead of enjoying this record to the fullest ..one of my all time fav discs...Mel, Robbin, John, Mike and Jim....hell of a line up!! Love you Robbin!! and no dis to Derek Forbes love him too!!
They didn't sell out, they evolved...and that isn't the same. When it came out I listened to it on average once a day for a year. Had to be special to maintain my interest like that. Still my favorite album.
.....! Once Upon A Time....That's once upon a time You raise me up when I know you're around But God only knows, what God only knows You lift me up and you spin me around God only knows, but God only knows...........
Happy30th, thanks so much for posting this. Your Ahoy songs have much better audio quality than the other posters, especially when I add "&NR=1&fmt=18" to the end of the URL and reload [give it a try].
Wow, was there too. Was that the one with The Waterboys, In Tua Nua and the Bangles? Great times and this was one of the best televised concerts of the time - all thanks to that iconic pop show The Tube! Can't understand why they've never released it on DVD
Cold play means nothing 4 me Sorry LOL !!!!! The 80s was HOT and following decades on showbiznASS is really cold and really death NOW since 30 years Watta heck
Its a shame that John was only ever classed as a session bassist. The man has true talent .

John Giblin was a poor imposter to Derek Forbes.
