Looks like I will be making one of those mistakes. I am starting my new retirement with a fresh start. Selling everything and getting down to one checked bag and a laptop. I've done several practice packs for weight (checked under 50lbs). I'm tired of the "clutter anchor" that follows me around.
Have you done an exploratory visit to where you are moving? Or are you going slow traveling to find out where to live? The later is great.
I wish I'd done that - and I wish I'd bought a luggage scale before I left the US 😂

I was planning to live in a van after my retirement in the US. Luckily enough, I found Dan’s channel before making that move. The most significant advantage of living overseas is the medical services you get for a quarter of the price in the US. I have been a lifetime member of his for over three years. It’s been one of the best investments I’ve made. I’m retiring this month and will be traveling by September. Be sure to have at least two Social Security checks deposited in your account before leaving the US, or you might be flying back sooner than you thought.

I can't WAIT to get out of America. I'm on track to retire in approx 15 years at age 59. I wish it were sooner because I want to start planning! But I know that I have to wait until a couple years before retirement to begin planning.
I have a very frugal lifestyle, I live well beneath my means, I save as much money as I can, and I know my money will go a lot further in a tropical location than in Michigan because Michigan's weather forces us to buy so many things we do not need in warm weather. I do not like the stay-inside-for-9-months lifestyle we have in Michigan either. I can't wait to move somewhere where I can be outdoors ALL THE TIME. I hate a/c, I love the heat. I cannot wait.

​@@user-bg2tn4kg5m I need to have enough cash saved up, and I do not have enough saved up in order to retire today and maintain my current lifestyle while I research and plan to retire AND move to a different country. But my savings ARE on track for me to be able to retire in about 15 years, like I originally said. It may come sooner, but it's not possible today.

Good day to you both. On the subject of retirement, I have settled in the seaside resort of Worthing, England. My grandparents lived here so all my best summer holidays and memories are in this area. Many people after travelling a lot return to the place that has the best memories. Where do you think you will finally retire when the time comes? There will come a time when you can’t face going to another airport and you have lost the motivation to keep travelling. It might not feel like it now, but I promise you, you will wake up one day and say, “that’s it!†In the meantime keep making all the great videos, many thanks 😊

Number one rule... if you currently live off American style fast food don't even bother moving to SEA!!! Having travelled to 106 countries, 97 different airports globally, and living in both the ME and SEA I probably know more than most...
Except Philippines - you can eat all american fast food there everyday.

Use USAA as a bank they have no problem sending ATM cards over seas. Plus main thing I need to know what phone service does everyone use to receive text's from America banks to verify who you are.? I heard Magic Jack is that true? This is the biggest issue I been coming across to moving to Philippines with my wife. Need a good answer I been watching and asking all expats on TH-cam hard to get a answer. Need your answer what you use with no problem
AOver the last 3-5 years, banks and investment houses have been slowly moving to 2FA applications rather than using 2FA texting. If you are moving overseas, set up the 2FA applications that your banks accept rather than doing 2FA texting. That will save you the trouble of doing it later when your bank changes, Plus, do it all and test it before moving overseas.
Don't tell your bank you are overseas and don't use online banking at all. Automate everything and have them email you your balance and transactions to keep track.

Dan, it's possible that in current world circumstances people are in a rush to detach from the home country, so leaving their finances in home banks can be a problem since they know accesseti their home accounts can be frozen, etc.

As an expat who's lived in Vietnam for the past 5 years I've noticed many people make the mistake of assuming the legal and regulatory systems that protecrted them in their home country all have similar counterparts in their new country that they can depend on if things go wrong. THEY DON'T. If, for example, the school you teach at runs into financial problems and stops paying you, there is no safety net in place to bail you out like there is in America. That's not to say, however that you have no recourse. I've been victimized several times but always found a way to get my money back. I had to be creative and leverage the friends and resources available. Accordingly, if you are a loving child of the Nanny State then I would reccommend that you stay home.
