What does it mean to “skateboard like a girl?” How do we get more voices talking about women’s skateboarding? Vanessa Torres invites us in to explain how seeing yourself in skateboarding can give you the confidence to finally drop in.

I've wanted to skate my whole life, but when I was a kid it was a mix being too broke for a real deck, and the problem with people thinking skateboarding wasn't for girls.
I finally got my deck 2 months ago, at 33 yrs old, and got one for my 13 yr old daughter. I literally couldn't be happier. I have been AMAZED at the female representation we have seen. What's crazy is now that we are getting better and more confident, WE are that female representation when we go to a park.
Not only am I finally fulfilling a childhood dream of mine, but I also feel so good about being part of bringing the love of skateboarding to other women and girls.

I'm so happy to see this comment, for years this was my dream and now when I'm 20 I've been abele to dot it, what makes me so happy and excited, no matter what people say about sports that are or aren't for girls (or boys) you are the one who lives this life so go ahead an live it! This empowers me so much as a women, thank you so much and have fun whit all the skate adventures coming 🛹💜🤗
Same. Hung with skaters growing up, but girls didn't skate. My 20-yr-old daughter is a skater and similarly, it makes me so happy. Good for you for doing it, too!!

You are welcome here. Come to the skatepark. Come to the spots.. As a male skateboarder nothing makes me happier to see my sisters out there enjoying and being apart of something I love and have cherished for so many years. Not everyone is focused on the tricks you land or if you can afford the newest fashionable shoe.. There's always going to be one though and thats just life unfortunately. . I've felt a lot of judgment at the skatepark even as a man and that's truly a terrible feeling. Im sorry that you ladies have had to feel that same way x10. We need you ladies. Keep pushing and keep having fun. The person at the park with the biggest smile on their face is truly winning.
Between the ages of 8 to 12 i used to skate absolutlely everywhere but i had no one to encourage or teach me new things. I was continuously told by people that skating wasnt for me, that skatings just for guys and i believed them so eventually i stopped. I love this yt video so much now at the age of 21 ive decided to buy a board and do what the hell i want because it makes me happy.

This is inspiring to me, I want to get back into skating. I skated for years when I was younger. Ended up breaking my leg and thumb skateboarding and it left me traumatized to get back on my board. I’m now 31. Also being Transgender makes it more difficult. I’m a very very very shy girl.

This videos so well done and so true. Amazing to hear how well Vanessa talks and represents skaters while sharing her own growth. She was a super hero before but now! Damn. And he’ll yeah on Lisa making so much footage available over the years, and also giving the good vibes. Skating with other girls is truly just the funnest time ever. Skating at the park by yourself is definitely not too enjoyable (unless the parks to yourself) and skating with guys.... what’s even skating with guys. It’s not something that really goes down...

This is amazing! I surf, and that’s exactly how you feel when you paddle out and there are a bunch of guys out there. But now, I am confident and have practiced my whole life. I deserve to be out there.
i am from colombia, left behid the skteborading about 10 years ago, now i have 29 years, and buyed a new board an start again, mi wife never do any sports, but now she come out with me to learn how skate. is increduble how the skatebarding of women is grow so higth.

I am so happy because this year there are lots of more women in my city´s skatepark! Last year I cried once because I felt really anxious and observed. Now I can literally go on my own and not give a damn. Its a healthy hobby and nobody can take it from me :))

Teaching my 14y/o sister how to skate is a fucking honor. Women can do it just as good as men, if not better.
The 90's brought Steemer and the NYC girls, Jamie Reyes etc.. Since then there's been girl street rippers. There's a few vert girls from even before that.
Just skate. Don't worry about anything else. Age, gender, sexuality, handicap etc. Forget all those labels & separation. We are one community.

That’s why, even tho well intentioned, this type of sentiment I hear from a lot of cis dudes isn’t helpful. Again, it’s well meaning, but misses the point and belittles queer/women person’s experinece of skating as an automatic outsider.

So relevant, I’m so sick of this us vs. them mentality. I grew up skating in the 80’s and I was thrilled whenever I came across a female skater and I grew up in a largely Hispanic neighborhood so all my friends were Mexican American and skating brought us all together. Every body experiences insecurity when they skate in front of other people, I still do to this day. So just skate and do you, you don’t need anyone’s approval or acceptance
