    In a lot of ways, these are the best kinds of knives. You can use them and abuse them and not worry about them. I tend to carry Bark River knives these days, but I use them hard. I figure if you aren't going to use it, it was a waste of money, but there is always a place for these good quality beaters around my backwoods homestead.

    I’ve been using one since I was 13. Chief let me use it until I found one I liked. 32 years later it’s still in my gear every trip.

    Great vid... I love my Old Hickory! I drilled a hole and attached a leather lanyard/loop to wrap a couple fingers thereby keeping the hand from slipping onto the blade. This is a great knife for such a reasonable and low price! Thanx for sharing!

    David, that was hands down, THE BEST Old Hickory Knife bushcrafting review I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of them. You are a real pro and how you got those tiny curls with the knife was awesome. Thanks.

    My grandfather was big on toggles. He used them to help pull trees down and ensure the knot was easy to release. Also, Grandfather had a kitchen drawer full of razor sharp Old Hickory knives. Very nice demonstration and great ferro rod

    Hey, thanks for the video. This is going to be a fantastic series. I have many expensive knives but the truth is you do not need to have or spend a lot of money to go out and enjoy bushcraft and the great outdoors. Expensive knives are nice if you are a collector or have extra money lying around but it is definitely not needed. Truth is, some of the inexpensive knives will outperform the more expensive knives. Sometimes you have a very beautiful expensive knife that you do not want to use it, which is a great shame because a knife is meant to be used.

    Blades get made for all kinds of special uses. But, if you don't know what you might encounter while hiking, camping or foraging the inexpensive OKC Old Hickory butcher knife is a great choice. It does so many things well. The steel is excellent and the length gives it versatility. You make good videos. Thank you.

    On oldy but a goody. That blade served in forging a path through the US, makes sense that it would still work today. Great job, my friend.
    Toggle are a great way to spread out the tension at a certain tie out point. Plus you just pick em up and out them in your pocket while collecting wood for the fire. Two birds, one stone.

    Say Heah Dave. I have a friend that when I got my Strimeng KS-9 Leuku, He couldn't afford ine since he was with family on the way and newky married. He decided to modify a 14" Old Hickory Knife. He did such a good job on it that everything I did with my KS-9 Leuku he was able to keep up with his modified 14" Old Hickory. Infact Lars Muncon crossed Canada using a Stromeng KS-9 Leuku as his main blade in his movie. I ended up getting the Stromeng KS-5 and my Bhuhu STAK. The smaller knives by Stromeng ate made out of the 1c27 Stainless and my Bhuku STAK is the lightest neck knife I have. It's a copy of the knife that was given to every Olympian that Olympic's that participated, I really like it. Yeah, My Stromemg KS-9 Leuku, with my Bhuku STAK and my G. B. Small Forest Axe with my Woiden Handle Fisjar Folding Saw make a great Traditional Carry. Sometimes I bring my Mora Handmade Firest Exclusdive $277 with this Carry. but only if I bring my KS-5 instead of the Bhuku STAK. It all depend's how I feel. Yeah I call it my Traditional Carry. But my friend still uses his modified 14" Old Hickory when we go out. It's holding up great from what I can see. Oh, by the way. I'm bringing some Gurka Shaggy Cigar's (in two different sizes) with my new Beretta Cigar Cutter and my Fox Parang Bushcraft Jungle Knife, with my 3V Master Hunter, and With my 17" Hultafors Bruks Agdor Hatchet, and my Silky BigBoy2000 with sheath for this weekend's outing. Coffee A La Mors goes great with my Gurka Shaggy Cigar's.,,.

    Someone told me how great rada butchers knives were. I found one at an Amish farm supply, and next to it was an Old Hickory like yours for $9-. The rada was like a butter knife next to a cleaver. As a bonus, you can easily reshape the handle if you see fit.

    I’ve been meaning to pick this one up for awhile, to replace one I lost years ago. It’s cheap, kinda fugly, but there’s just something about it...LOL. It kind of reminds me of the old trade knives from early United States. It’s not designed to be aesthetically pleasing, but it can take a beating, sharpens up easily, it’s reliable, and anyone can afford it. Great review! 👍

    • @HighCarbonSteelLove
      @HighCarbonSteelLove  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I couldn't agree more with your comment, my friend! Not late to the party, at all, my friend! I got the knife and sheath as a package deal from the pathfinder store, however, I don't think they make this particular sheath anymore. They make a couple that will fit this knife with no ferro rod loop but maybe they can add one on for you? Thank you for taking the time to stop by! -Dave

      Thank you for watching and leaving your kind words! Its a pleasure to have you here, my friend! I got the knife and sheath as a package from thepathfinderstore.com, however, I don't see that they carry it anymore. They do have several sheaths that would fit this and maybe one of them has a ferro rod loop. I also saw a few sheaths with ferro rod loops here - www.ltwrightknives.com/sheaths.html - but i am not sure if they will fit the old hickory. I have purchased some leather sheaths on eBay, so maybe that is an option? Let me know how you make out! -Dave

    Hello! I'm thinking about grinding one of these into a Kephart style knife. But the Condor version is only 40 and comes with a sheath. Do you have any insight into Condor 1075 vs OKC 1095 that might help? As always I hope you have a nice day. Thanks

    • @HighCarbonSteelLove
      @HighCarbonSteelLove  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for stopping by, Christian! I have an Old Hickory Kephart that Tom Chitwood made for me - th-cam.com/video/M11A5Zp7RHc/w-d-xo.html - and I have also owned the Condor for years and they are both outstanding! The biggest difference in the steel that I have noticed is that the 1095 of the Ontario strikes a spark much better than Condor's 1075, in using a piece of flint or chert. You have nice day, too, my friend! -Dave

      Christian Williams HL sells bags of scrap leather , about four pounds for $8.99 in my area . Bags are clear so you can get an idea of what's inside . Thats cheap enough to learn leatherworking by watching YT videos . One of the best is Step One Survival , he's a USMC veteran who shows how he makes leather products such as sheaths and pouches . He's also a humble family man . I don't want to hurt those who make leather products for a living , I wish them well and respect their craft . So if you want the best , pay a pro . But it can't hurt to give leathercraft a go yourself . The worst you can do is make something ugly that keeps you from cutting yourself until you get something better .

    I got 2 of these, one has a really light and rounded handle that seems to be made of softwood and the texture/pattern on the blade is barely visible. are they made dropping in quality or something?

    • @HighCarbonSteelLove
      @HighCarbonSteelLove  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats interesting, my friend. I don't think I've seen any in the pattern you mentioned and I wouldn't think Ontario would drop their quality. Maybe it was just that particular one that got by QC? Thank you for taking the time to stop by! -Dave

    Say Heah Dave, Say hello to Gulrica for me. But did you know, The Old Hickory in the 7" blade fits the after market U. S. M. C. Sheath like a glove, and you could get them for $7.00-$10.00 on web. I didn't want to make my Old Hickory Butcher Knife into a wood craft knife,, So I bought a Stromeng set of 3Knife set, I got the KS-9, the KS-5, and the Bhuku STAK, The 14" Old Hickory, My friend turned his into one and it's similar to my KS-9 but mine is only a 9 inches, The KS-5 is a 5" blade but in the 12c27 Sandvik Stainless which I really like a good tempered 12c27 and the Bhuku is Stainless also, I really like my set, But my friends Old Hickory is pretty good too, Lars Munson crossed Canada using the Stromeng KS - 9, But I think the wood isn't as hard up North as ours because of the growing season, Ours is longer and therefore more rings tighter harder.

    I was a butcher for many years and there's a reason we don't use the old style wooden handles anymore, they are harder on your hands with prolonged use and they're harder to clean (really clean) than modern plastic handled butcher knives. Be careful when buying those old wooden handled knives second hand too, some will have been used to the point of not being able to take a good edge before being sold on. I'm not saying don't buy the wooden handled ones, just be wary and don't automatically turn down plastic handled modern ones because if they're a quality brand like Victorinox you might be turning down a great knife.

    • @HighCarbonSteelLove
      @HighCarbonSteelLove  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can see how that makes sense for using it for it's intended purpose...heavy duty butchering. When using it for long periods of time in the woods, they do definitely get hard on your hands. Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave your awesome comment, my friend! -Dave

    Late to the comments but great video and demonstration... small correction though you lost it as a full flat grind.... definitely not, looks more like a high hollow grind. Full flat grind is a constant flat tapered plane from spine to bevel. This has a distinctive bevel at the cutting edge. If that bevel is perfectly flat, then it’s a scandi grind. If it has a slight concave then it’s a hollow grind.

    Say Heah Dave, When I got my Stromeng KS-9 My friend that just got married decided to make his own Leuku. Yup, he used a Ole Hickory in the largest size. Truthfully it come out great. I also got the KS-5 shorter Leuku that children start out with and women use it too especially in the kitchen. You know me I like to Multi Carry my knives. I also got the Lil STAK Bhuku. a beautiful L@@King Puukku size knife that's a copy of a Knife that all Olympians recieved for participating in tge Olympics that year. I hesitated getting the Stromeng because of the stick tangs, But after using them my hesitation went away, I realized that properly tempered stick tangs are strong enough. Not as good as full tangs but string enough. Infact Lars Munson used a KS-9 as his belt knife when he crossed Canada. But to be honest. I would of rather used my Bark River Golok it's a little more solid. Infact I made a A2 Set with Ghost Green Jade G-10 handles I have the Woodland Special, my Bravo 1, Bravo 2 and tge Golok. Now I'm working on my 3V Set. But I really like what some guys did with tgeir Ile Hickories like my friend. But don't get me wrong, I really like my Stromeng Leuku.,,. p
