- I thought it would be fun and useful to show you the creation of a piece from where I start hammering to the finished product. This is shown in 2x speed. One more question - I want to make round metal disc earings. When purchasing these blanks, what thickness would I look for. I don't want it too thick because I'm new to this and I want a deep impression, but I don't want it too thin so that the earings don't bend too easily when wearing.
I would probably use 18-16 gauge metal. That will be thick enough to give a good impression without warping the metal, but thin enough to still look dainty. Check with Jeff's Heavy Metals on Facebook if you're looking for larger quantities (he sells 16 gauge), or The Supply Guy or Metal Supply Chick on Etsy for smaller quantities. 🙂
That is pretty. I like aluminum blanks because they don't tarnish. What type metal chains do you use? I had been using sterling silver filled but they turn black over time and need polished. I think stainless steel is a good option.

I love your videos. Have you ever compared Renaissance wax vs Mothers Mag Polish? And why didn't you apply the Mothers Mag Polish after you wiped off the ink with alcohol?
Thomas Kal Hi there! Renaissance wax and Mother’s Mag are used for 2 different purposes. The mother’s mag is used to polish away scratches and give the metal a high shine. The Ren wax is used to seal and preserve the piece once it’s finished. If I had used mothers mag after inking the piece, it would have also taken the ink out of the impressions. Hope that’s helpful!

saleema khan There’s really no good answer for that question. The market is already very saturated with lots of stampers who have been selling their work for years and years. Their work is basically perfection. It takes a long time and a lot of practice to learn to even see the differences between good work and rookie mistakes. Every person is different. Some people have hours each day for practicing, and others can only stamp a few items a week. Some have a natural talent and others really need to work at it. 🤷🏼♀️
I’m also just hoping to help people learn to make gifts that they can be proud to give. I’m not a good one to ask about the business aspect of stamping. :)
WHere do you recommend ONLINE for me to purchase blank discs? SOme say "raw material - ready to be finished" is that the correct kind? THank you in advance!
Lana I buy my blanks on Etsy. You can just do a search for "metal stamping blanks" and you'll see lots of shapes and thicknesses and prices. When I first started, I got blanks from The Supply Guy shop. I still use his for certain projects. Now I get thicker aluminum for most things from Blank That shop, and fancier shapes from Birds Eye Blanks and Metal Stamping Blanks.
When you see blanks described as "raw material ready to finish," that means that they have a sharp edge around the outside (called a bur) which needs to be filed off, or you need to tumble the blank in a tumbler to remove the bur. The blanks from The Supply Guy do not have a bur, and the ones from Blank That do have a bur. For starting out, I would NOT recommend getting raw blanks. So, I would recommend The Supply Guy, or even beaducation.com for good, finished blanks.
Hi! I'm BRAND NEW to stamping.... I am having trouble getting my impressions to darken. Whether I use the stamp enamel or a sharpie, every time I try to wipe off excess, it also comes out of the design! What might I be doing wrong??
I am so sorry I am just seeing your question! I'm sure you've figured it out by now, but just in case, it sounds to me like you're not hitting hard enough with your hammer, so you're not getting a deep enough impression. If the impression isn't deep enough, ink will just wipe right out. Let me know if you got it figured out!
Hi! I have had the same problem and that's why after 2 years of off and on stamping, with 90% ending up costly fails, I am here watching Kate's videos again!!! I just FINALLY got the Mother's polish she uses here (though I never saw where she mentioned it in any other video), and after watching MANNNY other stamping videos, I've learned:
- I couldn't get a deep enough impression b/c I had really cheap stamping tools, ....
- then I had cheap blanks that were too hard & too thin (Brass from local craft stores; that you have to strike as hard as possible literally 15-30 times, while trying not to move stamper tool, so you don't get a double edge! Also, when you do get it deep enough, impression warps and scratches the whole back!)......
I have been so afraid to buy the more expensive blanks, even though I got better tools......
but today, using the Mother's polish after I stamp, I got AMAZING RESULTS, and when I darken it with the Sharpie, the marker stays in the impression as I rub away the extra!!!! Woohoo! Success, FINALLY!

What is the name of the tool you used to create the curved hook on the bead? I have to do it by using the pliers but you seem to have a cool tool that shapes the wire for you.

Brooke Blauer I like to wrap my bench block or anvil in electrical tape (seen here) or duct tape. It works as a cushion between the blank and the bench block, so that the back of the finished piece is scratch-free. I have a video about it - I think called "clean backs" if you want to take a look for a detailed explanation. :)
Hi, i just bought stamps and stuff. Do you have any tips and trix stamping in a bow? Like you du on the video. To get the letters straight and not too far apart?
Mikaela Lind hi there! The biggest tip I have is to practice! Every set of stamps is different to line up and space perfectly. When I practice with my stamps, I learn where to put the stamp next to the last impression to get good spacing. To get a nice curve like in this video, I usually line the edge of the stamp up so that it faces me, with the edge of the stamp meeting the edge of the blank, and then strike the stamp. Then I turn the blank a tiny bit to the left so that the next stamp will be right in front of me. I like to turn the blank instead of trying to move my hands and body around a blank that is stuck in place.

Carla Yepez Hi there! I just use rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth. It takes the excess ink right away. And it’s a lot cheaper than other polishing products. So if you’re already happy with the finished texture of your piece, it’s a great way to go. :)
Wow i didn’t know there is a plier/tool u can use to help making the wire loop to the bead..may i ask what is it called and is it a good tool to use?
Esther Tan Yes I love it! It’s called a looper tool. I am horrible at making a nice loop on my head pins, so it’s a life saver for me. Here’s a link where you can find one:

What tools/pliers do you recommend to attach the finished discs to my chains? I'm reading a few would work, but curious what you use! :)
I actually just use any old pliers. You can find them very cheap at Harbor Freight. If you're worried about them marring your jewelry, you can dip them in something called Tool Magic, which you can find at the craft store. It's like a latex coating.

Shelley Dwyer-Murphy Hi! I'm so glad you like the videos! Honestly I change my routine all the time, but I do frequently polish before darkening. I like to use "Mother's Mag" polish, which you can find in the hardware store. I've also heard really good things about Penny Brite.The hammers I use in this video are a brass hammer for the stamping, then a chasing hammer at the end to add texture. So I'm marring it on purpose. 😉 But yes, if you want to avoid marring your piece, nylon or rawhide are best for flattening and smoothing.

Kate, is that some kind of special Sharpie you're using at 5mins 15 secs? I've never seen one like that. If it is, where can I find on online? (I don't have access to many stores, for a number of reasons)

BeadtheWay bySC Yeah that’s just what was happening for me! Just kind of a dull, dark gray. And I like that for some things, like maybe a brushed finish mandala, but not everything.
I've been using the blanks from impressart and I can't get a regular sharpie or the impressart enamel to work. Any suggestions welcome thanks in advance:)
moediddles1 I'm finding that either Elmer's or Sharpie oil-based paint markers work a lot better than a regular sharpie. (I haven't tried the enamel yet.) In my experience, I have a little more control of the ink with the sharpie paint markers, whereas the Elmer's tend to be more runny. The Elmer's seem to have more color selection though. (Both are available on Amazon and in lots of craft stores.) I like to fill in all of the impressions with the paint marker, then let it dry a bit before cleaning away the excess paint with rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth, like an old tee shirt.
I've also heard good things about gilder's past for darkening or coloring (I really want to try it!), and I've tried Vintag patinas with some decent success.
One other thing - the Impressart blanks are a good quality, but sometimes the stamp you're using can just have trouble making a good impression for the ink to stick into, no matter what blank you're using. So, if it's a shallow, detailed impression or maybe an impression with lots of wide spaces where it's just too easy for the ink to wipe or peel away. When I'm using stamps like that, I try to use a few coats with the paint marker, and then just be really careful and light-handed with the alcohol so I don't remove too much.

Thank you for sharing sooo much info!! I am a beginner--- purchased a bunch of stamps & other supplies at Hobby Lobby a couple months ago. Haven't used them yet!! Guess I needed your tutorials to guide me. I appreciate hearing you explain what you are showing or doing. Pls don't be offended, but, I found the music annoying. I kept waiting for you to talk. Finally, at 6mins into video I realized you weren't going to speak. So I muted it then. I hadn't wanted to miss any of your 'pearls of wisdom' in case you had started explaining what you were doing!! At 3:02, what was that little blank for?? You peeled something off it, & you stamped it... and then you put it away...??? At 9:00, what is that tool called? It said 1.5mm LOOP. I really prefer to hear you speaking... and no music!! Thank you!! I subscribed yesterday after watching your 1st two beginners' videos.
Carol McCollum The small blank that I put away was just a piece of scrap. I was using a new stamp and wanted to test it out before using it on the piece I was making. The tool is called a looping tool and you can find it at the craft store. I'm terrible at making a decent loop on my own, so it's a big help for me. You can find lots of tutorials on how to use it.
Awesome work! Do you put tape over your metal block? I need to get these tools you have for the beads and all but this hobby is already getting a little expensive lol
Christina V I do put tape on my bench block. :) Electrical tape or duct tape will both work, but it keeps the backs of the blanks from getting scratched, and helps the metal displace out the back, instead of up the sides of the images you're stamping. That gives the finished piece a much cleaner look. I have a video about it if you check back on my channel.
I'd say the hobby is a lot expensive! Haha! But once you start, the addiction takes hold!

Ankita Gada Hi! That’s an old t-shirt that I cut up into rags. In this video I dipped it in rubbing alcohol to remove the excess ink after blackening the impressions. Rubbing alcohol and an old t-shirt are my favorite way to remove ink, but I do still use propolish pads to give a glossy polish to pieces.
I’m currently working on a video where I talk about the alcohol and t-shirt. I hope to be able to upload in a few days if you want to keep an eye on the channel. :)

slowtrtl Hi! The stamps that I'm using in this video are a font called "Fornax." They're sold by Urban Beader, and it costs about $275 for the complete set of uppercase and lowercase stamps, unless you can find them used. You can't find Urban Beader stamps on Amazon. You have to buy them from the company directly, or through a supplier.
In this video, you see a lot of cases for Bead Smith brand stamps. I don't actually own any Bead Smith stamps 😏 I have purchased several fonts, from lots of different companies and stampers, Most didn't arrive with cases, so I bought those separately. I'm only using the Bead Smith cases for storage and organization.
If you're interested in the Bead Smith stamps, I've heard they're good beginner stamps, and I believe you can get them on Amazon, Etsy, etc.

Where did you get your stamping Kits?
Hi Lanice! I don't actually use kits. I buy all of my tools and supplies from different places. I find fonts and stamps that I like on Etsy, at the craft store, Beaducation, or from stamping groups on Facebook. I get a lot of my tools and supplies at the craft store, on Etsy, or Amazon. Fimo Girl Hi there! I was using a font called "Fornax" from Urban Beader. The cases are misleading. :) I just use inexpensive Bead Smith cases for storage.
