  • For today's Tech Thursday we dissect both a freecoaster hub and a a cassette hub! For this tutorial we have a Primo Freemix Freecoaster wheel versus the Primo Remix Cassette wheel.
    Please be very careful when attempting to take apart your own hubs at home.
    As always, let me know if you have any questions in the comment section!
    Please let me know in the comments about videos you want to see, other tutorials, and any other suggestions you guys might have!

    solid complement to your other video on freecoasters, I don't usually deal with the small bmx drivers so it's cool to see the guts. nice to hear this stuff from someone with real technical knowledge too instead of just "yeah this one goes clickety clack it's rad"

    Yo, definitely on point with the guts and function between the two. Good break down. I say everyone try a "cassette" and a "free coaster" so you can use both. Be versatile!

    I wish we had " freecoaster" back in 1985! Sometimes I'd ride coaster brake to prevent the crank from rotating backwards when trying to do other maneuvers! I want to get " freecoaster" on my 22 inch! That's the bike I'm tricking out, I sure don't know it all, and I love your videos, thanks man!

      Please forgive my ignorance, but what is the benefit of female hubs? You know what I'm asking right?

    Old school cassette and freewheel for life. I do mostly old school flatland and they are perfect for me. I tried a freecoaster and it was terrible how it slipped I actually thought it was slipping and broken. I also like the noise of a freewheel and cassette, and pedaling backwards helps with balance and looks cooler.

    I ride a Saltplus Trapez rear hub, its is built like a cassette hub with springs, Pawls and an engagement ring inside the hub its self. However it comes with 2 sets of springs and pawls and one clutch plate, one set for freecoaster mode and one set for cassette mode, the only thing you have to do is swap them over and also flip the clutch plate 180 degrees. This will change the hub from a freecoaster to cassette mode in just a few minutes. Best hub I've ever ridden.

    From all that new to me info, I think there are only two reasons a free coaster might be of use to me. When I'm moving it around in my apartment so I don't get my shins hit, while I'm backing it out of a tight spot. And I think I'd like the quietness of it.
    But the lack of instant engagement is a real downside.
    The cassette is just a built in freewheel, so it would be much more familiar to me.
    Thanks for the informative video. 😎👍

    100% correct, i rode a cassette for maybe 4 years and once in a while i would try out my friends freecoaster bikes to see how it feels, after a while of thinking, i decided to get my own freecoaster and in a couple days i got used to it and i was as good as i was with a cassette, so yes start off with a cassette if you're a beginner, get used to fakies, try out a friends freecoaster bike, and if you like it then go for a freecoaster, dont go straight the a coaster just cuz u think its easier

    I rode both and they are both great. Freecoster does not mess you up so fast on a fakie, but cassette can give you a lot of energy and stability on the padles, what can also be very awesome.
    But I do not remember to have no axel sickicking out like you got on your cassette , you really screw the little screw out and then put there a peg onto it ?
    This is weird - this lil screw has to be damn brave and strong hahaha.

    I'm quite new to coasters but i can tell you that it's much more fun than cassette (well for me, just my opinion).
    Also fakies are much easier for me and no matter how fast you go you can 180 and fakie like it's nothing.
    But at first it feels like you never rode BMX before and it's awkward when you can't even properly bunny hop or anything easy (because you can really mess up the landing)

      @MurryFBM 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Erickridebikes not exactly, but pretty close.

    • @gienry
      @gienry 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Erickridebikes
      I ride the salt plus trapez freecoaster which is a "hybrid" freecoaster that uses pawls and can be switched between cassette and freecoaster; because of its design, even with the maximum slack ring, the slack is pretty short (aka the hub engages at 43.3 degrees/your pedals don't move very far before it starts going)
      I assume you ask this because you want to have the benefits of a freecoaster (not having to pedal while doing a fakie) but not have to deal with the slack when you pedal forward.
      Like the comment above said, you can do this, but kind of ...
      You'll freecoast when you fakie but if your slack is short, you have to be VERY careful of moving your feet forward and engaging the hub.
      I hope this made sense hahah

I've been out of riding for about 6 or 7 years (I'm 30 now) and have just recently been trying to get back into it. My biggest request with a cassette is that doesn't skip (that absolutely drives me crazy). Are you familiar with the BSD backstreet pro cassette at all or any of the BSD product?
