I think Sarah Keyworth's final joke is possibly the best example of using tension in comedy I've ever seen. The dead pan delivery, speaking just enough truth to add honesty to the set up. Taking the trope of the big dramatic proposal. It's one of those jokes that should be frozen in Nitrogen and saved for future generations. 😁

Turns out it was just unresolved romantic tension. I'm legitimately happy for them. How many couples are comfortable enough with each other to roast one another in front of the whole world? I guess when you drop a relationship nuke like saying "I will never marry you" in front of millions of people for the sake of a joke roast battle, there's no coming back from that.

Agreed, and I am from NY. The roast battles in the old days with Dean Martin and all the older comedians was absolutely the golden age of comedy for us, Nowadays, they just spew out a bunch of vulgar crap. I don't even bother watching them. British comedians always manage to keep it classy, even when they delve into the raunchy stuff.
Honestly I think it's because they all enjoy each other and aren't afraid to show it. American comedians all seem to be doing their own thing these days.

But that isn't as much of a negative as it seems to be over there. One of the reasons I prefer the UK version though is the genuine camaraderie that you can see between the Battlers. In Series 1 Mark Steel (famous Left Wing 80s comedian) went up against his son and after one truly vicious) joke his reply was along the lines of "I know it's wrong, but I feel proud of him coming up with that". 😁 I wonder if size is a factor? The UK is a pretty small island so the chances of comedians bumping into each other is higher. It means they have a chance to get to know each other more and know firstly how far to push each other and secondly what the likely reaction is so they can build their to integrate each other's humour. Or maybe they're just funny... 😁

But even though I'm from here, I've always loved British comedy. As far as why it's different, I think a lot of it has to do with our typical 'dog eat dog' mentality. Everyone here thinks they have to be the best, and that they have to outdo everyone else. I've always hated that, and I really don't see much evidence of it across the pond. I know we share similar social issues, but generally, I think you guys handle things better. At least, that's the way it looks to me.
A little bit of catharsis goes a long way. After doing some research it looks like Alfie and Jessie reconciled their relationship. That makes me happy after how personal that roast felt.

I can hardly think of a time recently where I've felt more inspired or my soul more full than seeing Rosie perform her tremendous act. For those unfamiliar, cerebral palsy is a condition where your mind is normal, sharp and able, but where you are limited in speech and movement. Unfortunately many people fail to comprehend and may reactively think or act abhorrently cruel. Rosie excels heroically in a career path where cruelty is the gimmick, and she spins that dynamic not only to succeed but fully dominate in her work. This is my first time seeing her on stage. IMO, she is an icon of the best of the human spirit, of tremendous talent, and for anyone who might have doubts about their capabilities when faced with adversity. My heart is greatly warmed by her tremendous accomplishments and practiced skill.

I wasn't sure if comedy is the right place for her so I was a bit sceptical seeing her roasting Alex - and it was absolutely hilarious!!! I laughed tears. Two humans with handicaps going at each other? Only on British TV and it's bloody brilliant and very progressive!!

I will say, Jimmy Carr being obvious as a judge for a roast, Jonathan and Catherine were two very professional choices. They understand the concept. Just that Jimmy is on the next level at understanding and dissecting the humor.

So awesome to see Brian Moses bringing his very popular Roast Battle Show that he started in the belly room @ The Comedy Store LA to the extremely hilarious top tier British comedians, and it being taken really seriously with high level joke writing. Very cool! Brian started it all way back in 2013...sux that most people only think of Jeff Ross as the creator of the modern roast battles but he was just put on the posters saying "Jeff Roast Presents" so comedy central could cash in on his name when it was really Brian who rejuvenated the classic roasts that were around when the rat pack were doing the old school ROasts with Don Rickles. Sux they cut out all Phil Wangs best jokes about Daniels dead sister...he would have one so easily otherwise.....fk comedy central

Well that's what it tends to be when Katherine is done awarding it to the woman and whoever the guest judge is awarding it in a way that Jimmy appears to often be disagreeing with. It does very often seem to be 2/3 with Jimmy having a different opinion, obviously one of those is irrelevant (Katherine's) because it's never based on the actual roast but even so, whoever the 3rd judge is often seems to go a different way than Jimmy too. Or maybe at that point he's just trying to be nice so the losing one will at least get one vote

Well that's what it tends to be when Katherine is done awarding it to the woman and whoever the guest judge is awarding it in a way that Jimmy appears to often be disagreeing with. It does very often seem to be 2/3 with Jimmy having a different opinion, obviously one of those is irrelevant (Katherine's) because it's never based on the actual roast but even so, whoever the 3rd judge is often seems to go a different way than Jimmy too. Or maybe at that point he's just trying to be nice so the losing one will at least get one vote
