  • As he landed on the shores of Spain, he looked back over the sea, beyond which there was a different world. One, he was once destined to rule but then, he wasn’t. Running for his life, leaving behind everything he ever knew, Abd al-Rahman finally had found a home in Al-Andalus, Muslim Spain.
For the next 700 years, Muslim presence on the Iberian Peninsula changed the course of history. Not only did Arab and Berber traditions found their way to Spanish culture but also, by extension of their empire, found their way to the New World. For instance, did you know that California means "Land of the Caliph"?
The research for this episode was mostly from Muslim Spain and Portugal by Hugh N. Kennedy.

I really love your channel, as Muslim history is fascinating, yet widely unknown. I particularly like to hear the names in their correct pronounciation.
I don't know if that's just me, but I think you're talking way too fast at times. It's just but a little nitpick, but as a non-native speaker, it's been bodering me a bit.
On the other hand, I didn't even notice how fast those 6 minutes flew by, so that's a good thing, I suppose?

First and foremost, great content. It’s nice to see the other face of the coin in medieval Iberia. On the other hand, as some other comments points, I think the serie might be greatly improved with other episode about Tarik (Tariq ibn Ziyad).
    Some minor points:
0:41 The colonists were referred as Antioquians by Christians, and considered a smaller contingent than Berbers. They came as a result a Berber revolt, and were granted a Yund.
The maps are in general well done, but the Kingdom of Asturias seems too big for 755CE. Case in point the banks of Duero river were the norther limit of the Yund and León has taken by the kingdom just in 754CE.
0:48 The boats were from Olbán de Septa (sometimes Julián de Ceuta) an Arrian Visigotic count. No wander Tarik was so liberal in their use :-D
1:47 Yemenis were high echelons over a majority of Ibero-romans peasants, Visigotics nobles dissatisfied with Nicean creed and Berber contingents. Please, some more credit to Visigotics converts to Islam.
A bit of religious context by @Extra Credits:
    th-cam.com/video/hZsZXHPDwsw/w-d-xo.html
    th-cam.com/video/6d2lOQpuqd4/w-d-xo.html
3:55 Great extended version of the Carmona siege, I was solely awake of the aftermath with the head.
4:51 The Song of Roldan is absolutely fictitious, asseverating ideas like Zaragoza has placed in a mountain. As you referred any pact for Suleiman Al-Arabi was trashed by, and this is highly debated, Basques, Cantabrians, Nicean Visigotics or a mix of the above mention.
Other issue with the maps the Umayyad never came near Pyrenees mountains. The territory of Al-Husayn was promptly retake by Frank/Visigotic forces. After in 795 CE Charlemagne created a buffer area of counties called the Marca Hispanica.
As I said great content never the least. Keep going :-)

    • @AlMuqaddimahYT
      @AlMuqaddimahYT  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

The maps are a bit difficult to create so they're never 100% accurate. See, usually, you know that this city was taken in this year by this king but you never know if a smaller city next to it was seized or not. So, there's issues with maps in all my videos. Think of it as a visual aid rather than a main point of the video.
I thank you for your comment, I learned a few new things.

Interesting view that Kennedy has about Abd al-Rahman. Other sources, written much closer to the events, say that he was, more-or-less, allowed to escape because the Abbasids didn't place much importance on him. He was one of many grandsons of the Caliph and, as his father had died when he was just a few years old and having only minimal interaction with the court, he was considered to be a minor prince and, though he was chased, he wasn't pursued. When he reached Ifriqiya, the Fihrids initially provided safety but soon grew suspicious of the large number of Umayyad court officials arriving, thus they 'suggested' he move on. Ironically he did move on, killed the Fihrid governor of al-Andalus, and began ruling. Some sources contradict the currently prevalent view that he was the sole member of the ruling family to escape, being joined by a half-brother later in al-Andalus and that his mother and sisters escaped the Abbasid purges.

Peninsular Spaniards generally score very low (if any at all) North African DNA and the only region of Spain with any real significant genetic imprint is the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa, because of admixture between the Iberians and the indigenous Guanches.

The Kingdom of Asturias (today an autonomous community of Spain, the Principality of Asturias, from which the title of the Spanish Crown Prince is styled Prince/ss of Asturias) is the only Christian stronghold in Iberia to have never gone under Muslim rule. They have a saying, "España es Asturias y, lo demás, tierra conquistada" meaning Asturias is Spain and, the rest, conquered territory. There are some famous Christian nobles in Iberian history from this region, with King Pelagius of Asturias (Rey Pelayo), a Visigothic nobleman, being particularly legendary. He is credited with with initiating the Reconquista of Iberia from the Moors, and establishing the Asturian monarchy, making him the forefather of all the future Iberian monarchies (hence the title Prince/Princess of Asturias for the heir apparent/presumptive in Spain).

    *Umayyad Kingdom* * *not caliphate*
Caliphate only lasted 30 years. Abu Bakar, Omar, Othman, Ali, Hassan.
Caliphate = Shawra + Bayaa = technocratic democracy.
    Also according to Hadith :

@@AlMuqaddimahYT Because the ruling system in Islam should never be passed on by blood, within a ruling family, it's should be a vote, a coucil deciding, then a referendum so people choose who they like to rule over them, according to Ayah
" And those who have responded to their lord and established prayer and whose affair is [determined by] consultation among themselves, and from what We have provided them, they spend."
Considering that in old Arabic 'affair' usually meant politics or government matters. (In Arabic : Amr)
The whole sura (chapter) is called Shura. (Consulation)
It's so important that the ruling system in Islam should follow the example of how Muslims chose the first 5 Caliphs. By vote and referendum.
Also as I said, according to famous hadith of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) , he foretold that the caliphate after him would last for 30 years, (the length of the Rashidun Caliphate) and would then be followed by kingship.
Hassan ibn Ali (RA) ruled for 6 months, and his term completes the 30 year caliphate prophecy.

May I (an infidel) respectfully ask, how do you feel as a Muslim about the imperialism (as described in this video) and enslavement of other people? Historians say that the Islamic slave trade in Africans was 3X - 4X that of the entire Atlantic slave trade. We of the liberal West stopped the global slave trade (thanks Britain!) , regret our participation in it, and came to regard it as savage. I have been reading and viewing clips on TH-cam that say that Muhammad was a slave trader, that there are many explicit endorsements of slavery in the Quran, and that in fact it commands Muslims to conquer and enslave people. Is this true? Have Muslims come to recognize the evil of slavery? And lastly, is it true that in Muslim lands where rule of law breaks down, slavery emerges? Because I’ve read it has emerged again in Libya and other North African lands. In other words, what is the special connection between Islam and slavery historically, and what progress has Islam made in this regard? Do Muslims generally understand now that slavery is a savage practice? And do they condemn savage practices like slavery? I’ve been looking hard but I’m having trouble finding evidence of such condemnation.
    A Seeker

    • @AlMuqaddimahYT
      @AlMuqaddimahYT  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

First of all, thank you for being respectful. I appreciate it.
Secondly, slavery isn't something that complicated in the modern world. It's illegal in all Muslim countries (at least, I can't think of one that still legally practices it). Most Muslims think that slavery is bad, but they might also try to downplay the horrible conditions slaves were exposed to. Some might say that it wasn't as bad as it's said and stuff. Just as some people in the US South might try to.
Islam allows slavery but no one advocates to bring it back.
Muhammad wasn't a slave trader. He never bought a slave with the intention of selling it and never did end up selling anyone. He actually only ever kept one slave, whom he adopted as his son. There were servants given to him by their parents. He did have concubines. Two, I think.
In the Muslim world, just as in the west, Slavery lost its profitability, thanks to the Industrial Revolution, so, it's pretty much died out. However, it's still present in SOME forms. It's not legal but in regions where law isn't the most powerful force, it still exists. Such as in some regions of Libya, you mentioned. It's common in my country, Pakistan, in the Brick Kiln industry too where a son has to work off his father's debt.
In short, Muslims do think that it's bad and no one wants it back. Although, some try to downplay the atrocities. No one says that it was enjoyable or anything for the slaves but some claim that it wasn't as bad as historians say, which is pure bullshit.
