    I love how Grey immediately tried to give Brady advice on not liking advice as soon as he mentioned it.

      When Brady complains about complaints being met with solutions... Grey offered a possible solution.

  • @squook
    @squook 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The thing about giving solutions when a person is complaining might be more comparable to the Aesop fable of the bathing boy. To put it briefly; a boy was bathing in a lake but went out too far and began to drown. As he cried out for help a traveling scholar came by. Instead of helping the boy though the scholar simply began to lecture him. The boy cried out; "Rescue me now, sir, and save the lecture for later."
    Now the moral in the version I have (Aesop. "The Fables of Aesop." Book-of-the-Month Club, New York. 1995. p132. Print.) says that "Counsel without aide is useless." In other words; it's all fine and good to say 'Well you should do this that and the other thing' when you're not the one who has to do those things and don't have to take any of the steps to complete the solution. Something tells me even those who said to Brady 'oh just download another app' would have been less likely to have given that 'advice' if they actually had to help him search and down load it and set it up and make sure that it worked with all of his other apps etc...

    I am listening to your podcast in reverse order! I found out that you existed after episode #77 and I'm working my way to episode #1 (but will listen to episode #78 when it comes out). Time traveller.

    I have symptoms consistent with moderate to severe damage to the corpus callosum meaning I'm basically a split brain patient without the surgery. One thing that's interesting is that I know a version of sign language and so I'm actually able to sign with both hands. Sometimes I find myself giving an answer verbally while simultaneously signing it. I find it super annoying and at least once or twice I've kinda snapped at myself and been like "I DON'T NEED THE HELP, I KNOW THE ANSWER." But sometimes I actually don't know the answer. It's kinda weird, it took a long time to get the hang of multiple choice tests because my instinct is to read with one side and answer with the other which doesn't work. Eventually I was able to start delegating the entire task to the silent side and it makes me super quick at the tests. I put a star by any I need both sides to think about then just circle the rest of the answers. I don't have any conscious memory of even reading the questions and if you ask me five minutes after the test whether or not a certain question was on it, I won't actually know even though I can give you the same answer I put on the quiz. Sometimes when I'm doing writing projects I'll just delegate it and be like "I need a paper this size on this topic by that date". Then the day I put the timer on comes and I sit down and just start typing. I will sometimes include jokes and since I didn't know the joke before I typed it, I'll start laughing. Silent letters habitually confuse me and I'll usually just have to add them while editing. Sometimes I only type or write part of a word and then I have to use context clues to fill in the rest of it. In general it can be annoying but you make do with what you've got.

  • @coryman125
    @coryman125 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The other issue with "Give solutions, not just sympathy" is that a lot of the time, people already know the solutions. Or, they know the solutions don't work but keep being told them anyways. Like people suffering from chronic pain who are constantly told "Just do yoga" and the like, as though they've never thought to try that, and nobody else has thought to suggest that, in the 10 years it's been an issue. If people want to give advice, maybe start off with "Do you need help?" or something, to indicate that you have ideas without just barging in with them.

    About free will-
    Free will and a deterministic universe are not contradictory. You have to do what your brain decides to do, but you are your brain. Having to do what you decide to do isn't a lack of free will. You might not always be aware of the thoughts leading to your actions or the thoughts leading to other thoughts, but it's still you, just with a limited degree of self-awareness.
    About the split brain-
    It's probably a real phenomenon.
    There are lots of other weird effects like this. Here's an example. Each hemisphere as a pair of pathways for vision (side note: and probably pairs for some other senses, as well). One is the "what" pathway, which identifies objects, and the other is the "where" pathway, which identifies where things are. When the "what" pathway is damaged, the person cannot recognize objects but still knows where they are (source: brain.oxfordjournals.org/content/126/11/2463). Point to an object, and he or she won't know what you're pointing at, but can still walk around it. There are other weird results of lesions elsewhere, like blindness but still pointing to an object when asked to guess where it is.
    Consciousness is probably distributed because the brain uses distributed processing, so it makes sense for consciousness to split when the brain splits.
    If underlying brain functions give rise to consciousness, consciousness might be sort of distributed and sort of divided between regions, simultaneously, depending on the situation, or both. There are not clear borders between functional regions (unlike for some anatomical regions) because each region is functionally linked to a bunch of other regions.

    Unless there is some reason that I must go forward (Say, a on going plot), I always do almost anything from back to front. If I am to get hooked on whatever I am reading/watching/listening to, it always makes more sense to me to watch the newer, more polished episodes first to see if I may be interested in the older, likely less polished parts. I am actually doing this right now.

    agree with brady on the advice part at around the 30min mark, it feels invalidating when people try to tell you what you should do etc. instead of just being there to listen. there are times where you don't even need to find a solution, just letting it out makes you feel better

    In regards to Brexit, we should consider that the House of Lords can basically veto it and say, "nope, this is not happening". This is a good solution because it stops Brexit however it's undemocratic because the House of Lords are not elected but are basically appointed "nobles". They don't do this often but the House of Lords can in theory overpower the House of Commons on this matter.

    I believe that the argument of free will is a little pointless. The resin is because the end result is the same, if we have free will, we feel, learn and grow. If we don't have free will, then we feel learn and grow. In both worlds the same actions and reactions take place there is no difference. idk that's just my assumptions.

    I'm a little late to this because I just got some time to listen to the podcast. It's a little interesting hearing what Grey and Brady think about the, "You Are Two," idea. When I first say Grey's video I thought that it was just another way to talk about the conscious and unconscious minds: you have the conscious mind that makes physical decisions for the body in question, but you also have the unconscious mind that takes care of all the bodily functions. I may be completely off on the way I understood the talk of the studies, but I find that to be a more interesting way to think about the idea than your brain being two separate entities after being bisected.

    There is a corrective nature to the internet - a joke in wow is that its better to state wrong information out and be corrected with the right info than to ask for the info. 1:32:26 This is a completely unfair representation of the complaint, Grey. And I have a hard time believing that someone who explains things for a living is so baffled by the idea that how you say something affects how other people interpret it. If you're uncertain about something, you need to express that uncertainty. If it doesn't come across in your voice, it needs to come across in your words. It's all fine and well to say _now_ that you're uncertain about a lot of things, but if you want people to understand that when you _actually talk about the things,_ you can't talk like you're so cocksure about everything all the time.
