    Brady, around 20:00, you mention how if everyone in a picture-chain of picture-pointing people pointing at the picture of picture pointing people were to try to be different it would become a sloppy mess, go to www.galaxyzoo.org and classify galaxies for 20 minutes. You see a bunch of elliptical galaxies (the round ones) and every now and then, a spiral. After a while, the spirals start being special and looked forward to. Then, sometimes you'll see a spiral and another galaxy merging and be like "sweet that's really cool". And if you do it for an hour or two, you might find something really, really cool and special. That's what will happen with these picture-pointing people chains. It won't become a slop of people trying to be special.

    • @danniejacob8573
      @danniejacob8573 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, the galaxies don't get to chose whether or not they are special to a human, but, people on the pictures do get to decide whether or not they can be special. This analogy doesn't work that well.

    (Around 1:32:00) the supply is *not* the hours you have available, it's what you churn out. The hours you have available are only a limiting factor of your supply. Saying the time you have is your supply would mean the supply would remain consistent if in three hours you churned out ten times as much work, which doesn't make sense. The work is the supply.

    I will have to disagree with Grey on the dashboard thing. To me it looks ugly, It looks like they stuck a tablet to the dash. If the a screen was above the steering wheel like a lambo I would love it. To each his own though.

      My mom has a 2013 Ford with mostly touchscreen controls for the climate and entertainment systems and I *hate* it. It isn't so bad as a passenger, but when In borrowed it for a week one time I practically had to pull over to change the radio station. You can use knobs and buttons without actually looking at them. Touchscreens not so much.

    gotta really disagree with Grey on the big touchscreen on Teslas being a good thing. There's a reason we still use physical, kinetic knobs and dials. There's easy feedback, you can change things without looking away from the road, and it's pretty much idiotproof. Now with Teslas it's like changing the AC is the equivalent of texting and driving. Not a good thing

      I wanted to say that. It's quite arrogant to think spec work is unique to creative vocations. It may not share the same name.
      Interns, high end restaurants have a "stáge" period where a person is trying out. Many banquet facilities will prepare a full course dinner for a perspective client. What do they think it is when food samples are being handed out? In a supermarket or a food court it free product in the hopes you buy more.

      +Phabel Greene I don't normally comment on TH-cam videos, but here's something reassuring:
      If you follow-through, finish and market your work, work your ass off to get better and learn new techniques, meet new people and make connections, you'll be in the upper echelon of people trying to break in the creative field. There are plenty of people trying to make it, but very few are putting in the time and energy needed to succeed.

    I disagree with the programming analogy, there is a severe demand for programmers on the world that is not being fulfilled at the moment. Maybe the app market is like that but not programming as a whole.

    • @BelacKriv
      @BelacKriv 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sakerdot I agree, and also unlike other creative fields, the final product performs a function that isn't subjective. There are some parts of programming that are creative, but the vast majority of it is not. Everyone wants to be the popular app developer, but not the guy upgrading an old program to work with a new platform.

  • @fingerboxes
    @fingerboxes 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The reason that Egypt is so unconcerned about the destruction of their national heritage is almost certainly religious. For most of the history of the pyramids it was probably heresy to say that the Pharaohs weren't gods, these days it's heresy to say that they were. Mohammad didn't order the destruction of the pyramids and other historical treasures of Egypt but neither did he order their preservation. That makes both preservation and destruction religiously/politically neutral. The reasons he didn't order their destruction are probably that he didn't know Muslims would own Egypt within a hundred years of his death; if he had known that, he wouldn't necessarily have known that the pyramids etc. existed; if he had known both, he would not necessarily have known who built them or why. He wasn't very well educated even by the standards of the day. Many of his companions and even wives were better educated than he was. This wasn't really his fault, he'd grown up an impoverished orphan and had basically been handed off to various relatives. I don't think that Islam is uniquely bad about caring for or protecting cultural heritage. Christianity and Judaism have mostly gotten their purges out of their system already. Polytheistic religions are better at co-existing with other pantheons: either they just fold the new gods in or they syncretize and say it's exactly the same as their existing pantheon.

    On the Spec Work video: I agree that it wasn't done very well, but the point is exactly to point out how silly making an analogy with these professions is. But Spec Work is abominable. Artists and creative people already have a portfolio of their past work, and a resume of their past work. You can already see their past work and style, and oftentimes the range of their capabilities. Asking for them to do the project you want is in fact a *commission*, and artists should always charge for commissions unless they choose not to (for charity, for a friend... who knows). You don't get to have a custom-made piece of creative work for free.
    Also, the problem with "exposure" as a concept in creative worlds is stupid. Just tell me the last pieces of graphic design work you've seen. There's some on these website right here. Now tell me who did that design work. No clue? *Me neither*.

  • @fiddleriddlediddlediddle
    @fiddleriddlediddlediddle 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Where do all of these programmers come from, by the way? Like if I wanna be an artist I can just open paint or any number of other free programs and just start doodling, but if I wanna program I gotta learn all kinds of jargon first. I have been trying with no success to learn that shit so where are these hundreds of programmers learning their skills?

    "There are no physical manufacturing costs..."
    No. Wrong.
    Digital work? Gotta pay for that computer, electricity, internet...
    Prefer traditional media? Pencils, paper, inks, oils, chalks, charcoal - professional grade materials are NOT CHEAP.
    Need a physical comp? Paper and ink, at the very least.
    Portfolio? Gotta pay for the binder
    Any sort of working example? Well, what do you need to build that? What about all the drafts?
    Let's not mention the time it takes to create these things, and to hone their skills.
    Just. Really, Grey?

    • @autohmae
      @autohmae 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually especially with digital works, if I have your file and I want an other copy of that file. I can make a copy of it. You as the creator didn't need to do anything. And the cost to me is minimal. As long as I'm not trying to mass-produce copies it's really low, the marginal cost is basically zero. Especially if you compare it to how much time/effort you have spend to create the original. Unlike physical items. Where with mass production things get noticeably cheaper a lot faster.
