  • The Nurburgring Nordschleife, Monza, and Spa are all famously good tracks. But there are also some famously bad tracks. Here are some of them.

    If you think the current Vegas track is bad, take a look at the one used for the F1 Finale of 1981 and 1982. The Caesar's Palace Grand Prix (like Miami) was held in the car park of the casino of the same name. The layout resembled an E, meaning it felt like a car park to drive. As a result, it wasn't popular with the drivers.
    Speaking of which, another track that would be up there with the worst, the Dallas Street Circuit. To quote The Race, "searing heat, a bumpy track, a track surface that literally melted, the one and only Dallas Grand Prix is not fondly remembered." Where the track did break up, it was dealt with by using quick setting concrete, which didn't help. To make matters worse, these were ongoing just minutes before the start, leading to some calls to boycott the race. The race did feature one somewhat iconic moment, Nigel Mansell pushing his Lotus to the point that he collapsed with heat exhaustion.

    • @SiVlog1989
      @SiVlog1989 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @FlashoftheBlades I don't like the Miami track, it seems to be a reflection of where the organisers would want the track to be ideally, rather than where it actually is (I reckon they'd rather have it at the seafront, rather than the car park of Hard Rock Stadium). What's more, the bizarrely large proportion of limestone in the tarmac mix meant that it was a one groove track in 2022 (indeed, Verstappen overtaking Leclerc for the lead was one of less than a handful of overtakes that took place) meaning that running wide even slightly meant losing any momentum gained. It's like Valencia, only worse in every way

    • @FlashoftheBlades
      @FlashoftheBlades 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@SiVlog1989 How easy was it to overtake at Valencia? You had a better chance of deflecting a gamma ray burst than seeing an on-track overtake at the Valencia Street Circuit. At least overtaking is possible on the Miami International Autodrome.

    Damn, this was pretty brutal, but also really funny :D
    I personally like some aspects of Shanghai (especially the long straight with the hairpin at the end), but Valencia, Sochi and Miami should be banned for life from hosting an F1 race. For Las Vegas, we'll see, but I'm also not a fan. It will be all glamour and no racing.
    It's funny how some people are capable of paying a million dollars to see the race at the worst track in the calendar. Just take the money and you can probably go around the world for the whole season (if not multiple seasons), get great seats for watching every race, plus a 5 star hotel and some of the best hospitality, all for the price of that one exclusive Las Vegas ticket.

Yes, most of his tracks are a bit samey and all whatever, but you can't deny the contribution he's made for racing i mean Sepang, Cota, Turkey, Fuji redesign, Bahrain, Hell even the hockenheim redesigns are good too

  • @bernardoberner4
    @bernardoberner4 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I have mixed feelings towards the Miami track, its not the worst thing Tilke has ever done but it really showed how limited the mans creativity is.
    It can basically be described as, a 90 degree right hander, a bunch of esses, a long ass straight, some very tight and twisty corners, another long ass straight and a hairpin, that the track for you.
    And I 1000% agree with you, its not memorable AT ALL

  • @saltyaphid3195
    @saltyaphid3195 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I dont understand the hate for Tilke. Yes his tracks were a little repetitive but (for most of them) it works. F1 fans seem to be really awful at judging tracks
    I remember last year when las vegas was on the schedule for the first time and everybody said it was gonna be terrible, but i looked at it and just said, this is going to be a wide track, as its built in an american city, and has hard braking zones, so itll probably be good. The event was cringe, but the race itself was exactly as good as I thought it would be.
    I agree with China though haha, ok track, but not a good country to race in

    • @FailedRacers
      @FailedRacers  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The race was only good because the track was slippery due to being new and cars starting out of position.

    • @FailedRacers
      @FailedRacers  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      But I do have to partially agree about Tilke. His tracks often suck, but it's not always his fault. He's often building tracks in dictatorships, and third world dictators aren't always known for being very smart. For example, the authorities in Abu Dhabi kept meddling with the design and wanted the track to go through the hotel among other things, so we got that terrible last sector. So it's quite often whatever third world dictatorship he's building the track in that makes it shit.

      @@FailedRacersi still believe that the race quality had something to do with the layout. Even if its not a great track its definetly not as bad as miami, but I guess we'll just wait and see this year.
      I totally agree with your other point. f1 shouldnt race in countries with a freedom score below 40/100. Not only does it often make bad racing, its literally sportswashing

      I've seen all sorts of negativity about Catalunya, although idk how much of it was only down to the chicane that we don't even run anymore. I will say I wish they would move pre-season testing back to Catalunya, or at least some other European venue. I get sick to death of Bahrain.

    honestly, I really like the first corner of the Shanghai track. With the newer cars being somewhat able to follow each other there seemed to be some side by side fighting there last week.

  • @garyhn2794
    @garyhn2794 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Shanghai t1 is not a bad corner just because its long, it is actually an overtaking zone as the outside line is viable thanks to the lack of the heavy braking zone as you said and the left turn it flows into, it creates awesome moments at the race start and its one of the most easily recognizable sections of track out there, which along with the other snail section, gives the track some character. i dont know why youd say tilke can't make anything original when the track has these two sections. the annoying turn 3 kink ruining all side by side moments coming out of the opening section goes unmentioned however; the esses are branded as a copy of sepang yet you probably enjoy those corners on sepang, and why would tilke making tightening esses once disallow him from making them again especially if its such a good combination? obviously not great for racing but every track needs some high downforce high speed corners imo. they are great for time trials/qualy and show the true power of the cars. the double left handers are indeed pretty boring, you forgot to mention the weird medium length straight that's only medium length to make the backstraight even longer, the snail section is again pretty bad for racing but it gives the track some character atleast, unlike the excruciatingly long straight where hermann tilke couldve used his "favorite design feature: a straight that isnt straight" to atleast make it a little interesting. the awful, flow-braking final turn goes unmentioned. i agree that the this track shouldnt exist and i do despise it (mostly because of the always gray sky and ugly architecture) but calling it bad from a design standpoint and calling it dull is weird.
    Miami: once again, average f1 fan calling the best recent f1 track shit and listing no real reasons for it, besides calling it unmemorable for some reason. the first sector is not kinks but esses that arent like cotas at all, in fact id say they flow much much better. the technical section provides some great battles, the stadium section is iconic, the chicane, while a bit weird, is memorable, the "stupidly narrow straight" is only "stupidly narrow"(still wider that the entirety of suzuka besides the front straight) for the first third of it, after that it widens to a very standard 12m. you did miss half of sector one, apparently it was too dull for you even though it created some interesting side by side moments, maybe put down your phone while watching the race or something. once again, a new track in f1 immediately gets branded as awful just because its in the usa and it didnt produce a crashfest or a surprise winner on its first race. you're right that the paddock is the most cringe on the calendar tho (along with Vegas)
    Valencia was terrible.
    Sochi is indeed in russia and basically made for putin, which sucks and i dont think its a great track either, at least t3 is memorable and i think the t13-14 combination is great with the curved braking zone in 13 and the walls being close on the exit of 14. the rest of the track is very stop-and-go and the rest of the corners just suck.
    Apparently every corner on the Las Vegas track is a 90° corner? when it has a total of 3. and every corner looks the same when it has:
    -medium speed flowing corners in the opening section
    -a very unique combination of a medium speed corner that turns into a chicane (albeit a pretty bad one) that flows into a very slow hairpin
    -flowy super fast corners that almost act as a straight
    -and a full throttle bend at the end
    this proves that when f1 gets a great new track (miami) that doesn't produce an absolute 10/10 just because the current cars suck so much that following someone even through a single high speed corner loses you half a second and the fans whine about it, they can give them a track perfectly manufactured for f1 with massive straights and easy overtaking opportunities, and they still find a way to whine about it, when this time its just the fact that it's in the usa. and that it's in a city that's basically a caricature of itself that thrives in the middle of the fucking desert off of gambling, fake hype and glamour and- okay that's a fair point this track should not exist.
