Enzo wasn't his enemy; he was Ken's competition. His enemy was Beebe and... well that was it! You hate competition on the field of battle and in the heat of battle because it drives you to do better. But afterwards, you respect and sometimes are even friends with the competition. I don't think Ken or Shelby would ever be Leo Beebe's friend, or even respect him as a person.

It's all a scam. 🤷‍♂️ GOLD AND SILVER is what has value, and the paper dollar was simply representing how much gold or silver you had, NOT to take the place of that gold or silver. Ferrari did not win another Le Mans until this year (2023). A Ford GT40 won four straight years but a Ford has not won since then.
The movie did not kill Ken Miles for the story, he was killed while testing a new Ford prototype in August of 1966. Carroll Shelby was not present at the track that day but Ken's son was.

      For a brief clarification:
-The original GT40 was designed by Eric Broadley of Lola Cars for Ford
      - Ford Engineers and contractors redesigned it to install a Ford 427/ 7 liter engine, to give it enough horsepower to exceed 200 mph on Mulsanne. But the car was really too heavy.
The "J" Car was the name that the Ford prototype with a chassis/tub of honeycomb panels, to lighten the car. This car eventually morphed into.....
The Ford Mark IV, that won both 24 hour races in 1967, and was retired/outlawed (no more 7 liter engines).
The cars that won in 1968-69 were derivatives of the original, small block powered GT40s, not the Mk IIs with 427s.

1:05 - Formula One is different than the 24 Hours at LeMans (the first and last race in this movie). LeMans is a 24 hour endurance race (F1 is about 90 minutes). F1 focuses on open-wheel, single seat driving while LeMans has more flexibility in terms of vehicle design. F1 emphasizes engineering tactics and strategy (e.g. optimal chassis airflow design) and LeMans tests how well (or not well) a vehicle will last within 24 hours of continuous stress on the vehicle's parts.
4:06 - He wasn't really going to fire everyone; it was just an attempted motivational speech.
22:19 - $200 a day in 1966 would be similar to making $1900 per day in 2023. The average daily wage ($50k yearly) in the United States today is about $24 per hour ($192 for an 8-hour shift).
To give you some historical context, this movie showcases Lee Iacocca (Jon Bernthal's character) and Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon's character). Iacocca started his career at Ford and was responsible for the design and release of the Mustang, Pinto, and Fiesta. He went on to Chrysler in the 1970's and not only prevented its bankruptcy, he brought the company back to profitability as well as purchasing and bringing Jeep back to profitability.
Shelby was already a race car legend in 1966 and his Cobra roadsters were already doing 0-100 km/h (0-60 mph) in four seconds, which today is performance similar to supercars like Lambos and Ferraris.

  • @bizjetfixr8352
    @bizjetfixr8352 ปีที่แล้ว +2

$200/day was a lot of money in 1964. The minimum wage was one dollar or less.
They decided to redesign the car for the 7 liter/427 cubic inch NASCAR engine, because they needed enough power to go 200mph, and run for 24 hours. The 427 was the only engine they had that fit the bill. It didn't hurt that it was a "production" engine, that you could order in your new Ford.
Phil Remington was one of the greatest race engineers/mechanics. His job was to come up with solutions for all of the problems found during testing.. He learned metal fabrication while working in the Southern California aviation industry, and migrated into building road racing cars. The Cobras and the GT40s would not have been what they were without him.

I noticed a couple English expressions you didn’t understand: Ferrari actually called Ford “pig-headed” which means “stupidly stubborn” and a blank check is way to say any amount of $ you need. When you write someone a blank check, you leave the amount empty and the other person writes in whatever they need.

I love all the authentic northern English vocabulary and accents from Christian Bale and the actress, Balfe, playing Mollie Miles.
The Wrekin is a plateau in the English Midlands. "Going round the Wrekin" is a slang idiom for taking the long way, or the scenic route.
A Cob is another word for a bun, in particular a large sandwich bun, in certain parts of England. There are many names for the same thing.
A Pillock is a term of abuse, relatively mild, in between a twat and a cretin.
Buggered technically, literally means penetrated in the arse, i.e. activity which used to be a crime. But in British slang, it mostly means wrecked, broken, ruined. It's milder than fucked, because something buggered can still be repaired, whereas if it's fucked, it can't be repaired.
To lamp, as a verb ("don't make me lamp you with this") means to punch or hit. It's lamp as in putting someone's lights out; knocking them out.

NASCAR stands for National Association of Stock Cars. 'Stock' is the magic word here. Stock USED to mean cars off the assembly line. Now there's nothing stock about them except body style. Formula 1 racers are open wheeled and the tracks have lots of curves or on city streets, while NASCAR races oval tracks counterclockwise.

Back in these days, the races weren't necessarily about what car could go the distance fastest... It was more about, how far can it go without breaking down.

Thanks for the passionate reaction, with bonus Italian translation.
The GT-40 is a great looking legendary race car. This is such a fantastic but also heartbreaking movie. Unfortunately being a true story means they sadly couldn't change the tragic fact Ken Miles died.
As a car enthusiast I would have liked to see scenes about the initial design and engineering process for the first GT-40 prototypes. We only get to see the cars tested. Then of course the racing.
    Bisscute did you know
Enzo Ferrari's ego & snobbery is also what inspired Ferruccio Lamborghini a tractor manufacturer to start the Lamborghini car company.
Bisscute you need to see more classic cars. Yes new cars are safer, more efficient and a few expensive ones are not bad looking, but most are boring lumps of thin metal and plastic that stop working after just a few years because of too much technology.
A classic car is simple and can be maintained and driven forever because they don't have computers that stop working properly after a while.
Car manufacturers want people to buy a new car every few years but thats expensive and clearly terrible for the environment.
There are many classic cars that are beautiful like metal artwork, with curves like a woman. Very few new vehicles have that kind of character.

    • @Mark3nd
      @Mark3nd ปีที่แล้ว +2

There's also the Baja 1000 vehicles a Ford can go through. While the beautiful road cars are hypnotistic, them Gods of Terrain are just raw metal muscle.
You don't find that anywhere near today with Trophy Trucks. Class 8 is the example of those muscle trucks tanking the environment

The comment Ferrari made about Ford being "Henry Ford the second" had a deeper meaning. Ferrari was already known for saying that in racing only winning counts, and nobody remembers who came second. With this he was basically telling Ford that he's irrelevant, because he isn't first.

So Ken Miles would have been (and is still considered to be) the only driver ever to win the Triple Crown. That’s the 3 most prestigious races in the same year.. Le Mans, Daytona, Sebring. He won Daytona, Then he won Sebring. And he only lost Le Mans because he was asked to slow down for a photo. No driver has ever actually completed the Triple Crown. However, many racing fans consider Ken Miles to be the only driver to ever achieve this accomplishment. At least in the hearts of many, Ken achieved the impossible. Even if the record books say otherwise

(He also wasn't the one who suggested the three Fords crossing the line at the same time - I believe that was Shelby.
Whoever it was, nobody at Ford knew that the Le Mans race rules would have the run to the car act as a tiebreaker on distance and cost Ken the win.)

Going well over 200 mph he looks into the rear view mirror with the world disappearing at the speed an airliner would fly below 10,000 feet. He’s all alone though and decides that it’s better for him to be a member of a team than to blitz for a win. It’s an amazing story about a group of men that produced a beautiful car during an amazing time. Ferrari was an amazing adversary and just as formidable as Ford. Hehehehe. Watching your reaction to Enzo's cursing in Italian was HILARIOUS. Legend has it that's almost literally verbatim as to how the conversation went down. Enzo always was a smug, prideful bastard lol. And that mindset, sadly, was passed down over the decades into modern-day Ferrari's interaction with their customers and the media as well.

It was and is ...a great film. I used to watch 24 Hours when they were broadcast in years gone by and loved the race. I saw many and managed to catch several of the Ford Wins but missed this one. And I'm truly thankful Ken was so honored. Shelby was a hell of a man...and friend. I've always loved the, Cobra, and saw one the other day it still gets my juices flowing.

Excellent video Biss. Movies like this are great that are based on real life people and their story. The series that these GT40's raced in were not actually formula one cars tho, the formula one cars are open wheel with no roof on them. Much more dangerous back in these days than the sedan type cars.

$200 in 1964 when this took place would be equivalent to $1,972.20 a day or around $1,800 euros a day so yeah that’s a shit ton of money especially considering when they made him the offer he was only brought on as a technical advisor not a driver

54:14 "The disgust I have, right now..."
...is disgust we _all_ felt, at this point in the movie. We understand.
Consider Ferrari's conduct, in this race. They had a well designed, well built _car._ They had a properly trained _driver._ They had a NASCAR-trained _pit_ crew. It seemed like they had _all_ the things they needed to win _this_ race, just like they had won the last _several._ But it wasn't enough.
_Ford's_ car, aside from the door, was _better_ designed. Ford employed a _better_ driver who had worked on that car's _assembly._ Their pit crew wasn't anywhere _near_ as fast or efficient, but it didn't matter.
But Ferrari cheated _all_ this by buying off the _judge._ Yeah. It's _all kinds_ of revolting.

Presuming they're working on the car as the same year as the race (1966) and getting paid the same amount for the 90 days they need the car ready by, $200 in 1966 is about $1,887 today (pretty nice for a day's pay!), so after 90 days, that's $169,828.33.

19:46. Bad read here. He was talking specifically in code directly to Ken. Carroll Shelby is anything but a sell-out.
$200 is equivalent to roughly $1,886.98 today. So that's $13,208.86 a week, $52,835.44 a month, $634,025.28 a year. In short, it's a ridiculous salary. That's of course if you work every day for that time frame, so that's the theoretical maximum.
While I don't watch modern F1, or any racing for that matter really, I put my stamp on Ayrton Senna.

I’ve read and heard that Beebee wasn’t anything nearly as bad as this movie makes him out to be in real life, they just needed an antagonist for the movie. Lee Iacocca went on to be the head of the Chrysler corporation and saved them from going out of business. He brought Carroll Shelby along to Chrysler doing several collaborations of different car models, and also a huge part in designing Chrysler’s own sports car, the Dodge Viper. The scene contrasting where Ford flys away in a helicopter to just come back later while Enzo sticks around just taking a quick break for a meal is pretty much to be expected. Enzo was a racer who also sold some cars. Henry Ford was a car corporation owner who just happened to dabble in racing just to help sell some cars.
