    I think it would have been cool if you explained how the fingerprint image is turned into data that a phone recognizes as a password. How does it identify the correct shapes?

    I have used a fingerprint system that also checked for "life signs" by makeing sure you had a pulse and had uv light so a gelatin mold of a finger print could not work. It also registered the hemoglobin in your blood to make sure it was real blood.

    2:23 WTF I'm pretty sure scanning angle is deliberately possible because the sensor is designed to be able to compare the stored fingerprint and the scanned one independently of the angle, and not as a byproduct of "only requiring a good enough partial match" (which is true by itself, but still your point is false).

    • @tonyrulez69
      @tonyrulez69 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly. By the way an upside-down scan is COMPLETELY different, and it couldn't be matched to the original one with "good enough partial matching". It can be matched because it rotates the scan.

    • @Dowent
      @Dowent 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would be the case if you were able to get the exact lines on your fingers, but since you only basically get a bitmap, the pattern does change based on the rotation, so when you rotate it back to 0° and transform to match the cells at that angle, you end up with a different pattern.

    • @gamingbud926
      @gamingbud926 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's only if the sensors are arranged perfectly circular. If they're not, then some of the sensors will not be activated the same way from a different orientation.

    As I understand it the idea that fingerprints are unique is not actually proven. we know they are not determined by genetics as identical twins have different fingerprints, but I have heard of at least one instance where a person was accused of a crime they didn't commit because their prints were so similar to the actual perpetrators that investigators couldn't tell the difference. One more reason not to trust biometrics too completely.

    So capacitive biometrics use tiny plates that detect conduction which creates a general map of your finger.
    These are pretty reliable because even when the glass is severely scratched, they're still quite accurate.
    Moving on to the under glass biometrics like in the Apex concept, would the accuracy of that one be compromised if the screen is scratched? Since it uses an optical sensor through the display, through the glass, if the glass were scratched wouldn't it also be reading the scratch as a ridge or part of your finger?

    I was doing a Touch ID demo in a Target near me, here's a little trick. If you scan, use all of your fingers each scan. For example, though the home button with the thumb once, then carry on until you finish. That way, you don't have to keep adding fingerprints. This can work with different people too.

    I think it's worth noting that in the US a password or pattern is protected under the 5th amendment but fingerprints are not, meaning if anything on your phone can be used against you in court you cannot be forced to unlock a password protected phone but you can be forced to unlock a fingerprint protected phone. I know for most this is a non issue but I think it's worth informing people about.
