Karel Čapek is Czech, and quite famous in SF circles. His play RUR gave us the word robot.

@@SciFiScavenger His "Absolute at Large" (1922) is a very unique science fiction story that tackles the absurdity of war among other things but is hardly ever mentioned. I still think about it some 40+ years after reading it.

    Great selection!
Joe has shown some exquisite taste as always.
    And everyone else too.
In fact I had Nor Crystal Tears as well as the one of Showboat World on my list too - that were twp of the pictures I wanted to send in my follow-up mail. (Which I have obviously forgotten.... :D )
BTW, Der Wüstenplanet translates into The Desert Planet.
The Pip and Flinx books are set in the Humanx Commonwealth (The Iceriggers are also set in the Humanx Commonwealth for example)
    Till next time, Jon!

The New English Library cover art is consistently evocative. It's a pity there is no comprehensive, definitive compendium, an all-encompassing work for the ages, about SF cover art. It's the copyright quagmire of course, that prevents such but still, there's just got to be one coming along someday hopefully. Pretty good narrative for not having a script, Jon! Cheers.

Hi Rick yes i really like the art on the NEL books. I'd settle for a list of those so I could get on with collecting them. Thanks for watching 👀!

I love the Michael Whelan cover for Nor Crystal Tears. I borrowed the book on the beautiful cover alone from the library. First Alan Dean Foster. Highly enjoyable. Wonderful book.
So annoyed when the Kindle version had a horrid cover, that made the protagonist look like a roach. Seriously, do they want to turn people off the book?🙄🙄😖

I have a copy but not that one. Mine is OK too art-wise. Not a Whelan tho. 🤷‍♂️

I don’t know if you've come across the word *bildungsroman* before but it's a word English borrowed from German to describe a coming-of-age story - *bildung* (forming) and *roman* (novel). So that's where it comes from; you may have come across it in English already 🙂

Some of those German covers were fantastic.* Its interesting to see how other cultures interpret material. I'm a fan of Moomin creator Tove Jansson whose illustrations for the Finnish version of The Hobbit give it a very different feel (her work is always a tad spooky).
*insert superlative here. I feel like I've overused all the ones I know. I originally wrote "awesome" but then cringed and changed it.

Wow, great collection of artworks. And I had no idea that there are so many German followers (like me) around here, so hello everyone! … HARDWIRED is a cyberpunk classic about a female assassin with very interesting killing methods and some kind of tank/battleship pilot. It’s hard to describe, but the story immediately sucks you in and throws a lot of stuff at you that you have to decipher while the story progresses.

#1) Squee Zelazny endorsed it, I would read it for that alone.... not sure the cover WITHOUT Zelazny would do it though.
Krakatit - Lovely cover art... Just don't say the title aloud at work...
The Starport image is great, I would totally hang that on my wall.
Showboat planet disturbed me! Please tell me that image was done by photographing the cover TWICE and pasting the images together and NOT by opening that old Vance book completely out and wrecking the spine...
The dark side of the sun! Nice, mine is a Kidby image though.
    Lol, dad joke fungi....
