    Good call on passing up on that one! Also just want to point out, just because it has a replacement tailgate doesn't necessarily mean it was in a wreck. My dad has backed up into a tree while cutting firewood with the tailgate down. The guy I bought my land from tried pulling out from under a gooseneck trailer, forgetting the tailgate was still up. There are a lot of reasons why a tailgate may have been replaced.

      +Stoney Ridge Farmer lots of nice clean rust free trucks here in California, you can find a nice running clean truck that for whatever reason won't pass the smog test, people tend to dump them fairly cheap. we had an 88 Toyota, bought brand new, drove it for 252+k, passed the smog check with no fiddling, no accidents, rust free, no leaks, no smoke, it was 2wd, all maintenance was done at dealership. She let it go for 1500. there ARE deals out there, you just have to be on your toes.

    In 2010 on Reno Craigslist I found a 1997 F150 XLT with 118,000 miles. Nevada truck with Zero rust, perfect body and paint. One owner paid $27,000 and $3,000 for the camper shell. Asking $5,500 I paid $4,700. It has turned out to be a solid runner, paid for itself hauling furniture etc. Still runs great.

    The beds on those mid-80s toyotas were all prone to rusting from the inside out. My '86 was in really bad shape when I finally sold it in 2005. The cab didn't rust at all. The story I was told was that the beds were manufacrured in a different plant, and the welds weren't sealed correctly, so water gets trapped from below and rusts its way out. That said, I miss that truck and would love to own a 90s model.

    Excuse me since when did body work ever concern a farmer looking at a truck for farm use? I mean really and since when would any real farmer consider a little pickup truck for real farm work? I'm curious I grew up on a farm.

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Ok...here's a "real farmer" response.....I called this guy and asked about the truck ...he said one owner..did have some rust but I had it repaired and welded in all new metal...clearly a lie....I had the engine rebuilt about 6 months ago....it was covered in oil...never been in an accident....clearly it had been hit in front and rear........just had it inspected.....but I couldn't drive it on the road...had to test drive in the parking lot......
      It's not the body work...it's the lies that are my concern....now....as for a little pickup.....it will do just fine for what I needed...getting around the farm and running errands....

Houses ROT and go up or retain value where cars loose 90% of thier value???? About a third of which was machine work (limited shop availability in my area) I did however do some upgrades to the engine while I was at it such as an 89+ upper intake so I have the newer style IACV, a cam, dual row chain, a brand new head and a better clutch. A little more than I wanted to spend but all said and done I know it's built right and everything is built to spec.

    Times have changed. I grew up on a farm in the Midwest in the late 70's and 80's. We didn't have fairly nice trucks (except the month it took for a fairly nice one to be put to work and get thrashed). We had dependable pile of crap farm trucks on the farm. That said, Toyota trucks hold up well where the roads aren't salted. I have a couple on my ranch in Oregon with sound frames and 300,000 + miles. I had one in Pennsylvania years ago and it rusted out like the one you looked at. I'm with you on not supporting shadiness, regardless if it's a deal or not.

Meet up 10 at night (I also had a headache so I wanted to just get it and go), looked it over really quick and said ok, here's the cash.
      He says, "I'm actually impressed you didn't try to start haggling on the price. Here's 20 back." Cool, thank you, and was on my way.

While I'm about halfway (90 mins.) into my drive to the truck, I send him a text as final confirmation of my arrival time, and he replies, "Sorry dude, it just left here."

    I'm sure you found a farm truck by now but if you're looking for another one...I have a 92 GMC 3/4 ton 2wd that was given to me. Cab corners and wheel arches are rotten but it's solid underneath. The bed floot is also beat up since it was actually used as a truck.Previous owner had trans rebuilt n new tires all around (I have his reciepts n warranty paperwork for trans) before it spun a rod bearing. I put a Jasper reman v-6 n new gas tank in it. Under 500 miles on engine just to make sure everything is right. Trans n tires have about 5k miles. The truck ain't pretty but is a worker. It won't pull a big trailer but will haul anything you want cause it's rated 8600# gvw. I'm asking $3500 but can negotiate some. I've known the previous owner for many years and he bought the truck used from a local dealer back in 94 so he got many years of work out of it n whoever buys it will get many more.

    I know about that fine tooth comb. I was looking at an 02 Dodge 1500 quad cab. People wanted 5k for it and the first thing I saw was dash trim was missing. Had a fog light switch, no fogs (found the original bumper under the tonneau cover with the fogs), tires were bald, drove okay, but had a pull. Stopped and made sure I didn’t hear anything unusual, checked all the switches and lights. Found a vacuum leak. Got back to the place killed it and wanted to see how it would start after. 🤣 Damn battery exploded under the hood. I tossed the keys back and told them to knock some off the price.

    Ahh yes, the old, I just had the engine rebuilt scam.
    When you're shopping for an old car and truck, and the seller says, "I just had the engine rebuilt."
    Right away ask, "Let's see your receipts."
    The odds are he will have nothing to show you. If he's lying about the engine, he's also lying about everything else he figures he can get away with.
    So shop elsewhere!
    As for this truck, the body work was crappy. The engine was original and had not been rebuilt.
    If that old guy is a scammer, he's pretty bad at scamming.

    I have an 87 Toyota Pickup, 251,000 miles and have had no issues thus far. It has probably one of Toyota's best engines --- period. The 22R engine is extremely reliable, it's an interference engine with a timing chain, so as far as timing goes, you need not worry about anything there. Mine doesn't haul 1 ton, but Toyota did make a truck just like this that did indeed haul one ton.

  • @johnme7049
    @johnme7049 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    88s were notorious for rust. I had a 74 Chevy truck and it was a desert dream, (I wish), compared to my 88 Toyota. I still have the Toy but only until I find something to put the engine in. It is rusting SOooo Bad that you can push chunks out of the frame by hand. I parked it last year because it was just unsafe to drive. Also the Headlight relays were BAD to go out. I always ran fog lights because I had several times when I would go from low to high beams and the lights would go out. Yes I took it to Toyota and was told it needed a new relay which lasted less time than the original one. I replaced it over and over until I just used auxiliary driving lights instead of high beams but you could never trust it after that. So foglights and driving lights and MOST times you could use the OEM low beams.

      My toyota truck was in worse condition when i traded my built mazda truck and gave him extra money. I spent over 1k in parts making that mazda suspension better.
      My engine is clean now that i replaced all the seals, but the guy i traded is a friend and he spent 2,500 getting my engine rebuilt. I had to replace my valve cover gasket and oil pan gasket though. I suppose he was being cheap where he could cause I’ve spent over 1000 in parts this month to fix my truck.
      The seller was a body guy and I’m an automechanic.
      My trucks body is in worse condition, but these trucks have value and they last forever. Just gonna be an expensive restoration.
      The seller didnt do a perfect body job on my truck either because it wasnt a car he was planning to keep. His cars, trucks and motorcycles are beautiful because he is a body guy.
      Anyways, i hope this perspective helps

      Luis.. You CANNOT build a 100% top to bottom rebuilt engine with 100% toyota parts for a mere $1000..
      I guarantee if you find one, its got the cheapest crap parts they could find inside it...
      Think of it like this..
      They wouldnt sell it for 1000 if it cost more then that to build, nobody does things to loose money or break even.. Which means a fully rebuilt engine for $1000 cost them 500 to 700 to build.
      5 to 700 to rebuild an engine = cheapest of the cheap crap parts.
      You get what you pay for. Which is why a proper toyota engine rebuild is expensive

    1. Rear plate was VA Antique, avail. to any vehicle 25+ model-years old. It's a permanent plate that costs only about $80; no annual re-registration/fees forever afterward. Truck cannot be used on the public roads for anything other than parades, "testing operation", or occasional pleasure travel; no hauling is allowed. Good news: the insurance is cheap as s**t (maybe $100/year), and to get the plate, all the owner has to do is "certify" (by personal affidavit) that the vehicle is safe to drive. No official inspections, no state police involvement, nothing. This guy went Antique b/c he knew it couldn't pass inspection to retain a standard registration. 2. To me, a number of pesky/crazy electrical faults means either a bad alternator, or a **flood car** that the owner has been paid off for as a total loss, but that has been (illegally) been put back on the market, or both. You were right to steer clear of this bomb-in-the-making.

Good thing you inspected the truck.

    Toyota has actually issued a internal tsb/recall. If you have a truck with frame rot (that is not heavily modified or been previously "repaired") You can have the entire frame replaced at a dealership.
    To my knowledge they have gone back as far as 2000. And the two vehicles that I saw had a majority of frame mounted pieces replaced as well.
    Its definately worth investigating

      That truck (if it was an 86... he said 86 and 88 so i don't know which) with no issues and a little rust would be worth MORE than $4000 due to the solid axle. I still see early 90s models going for over $10k and early 00s going for close to $20k

    "If you can't steal it, don't buy it.". What a bunch of cheapskate BS. Most people work hard for their money. Here's an idea: pay people a fair price! If you do, then they can do the same when they buy something from another person. Your mentality is troubling because, while it saves you money, it withholds it from others who may...and probably do...need it.

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      So...you must go to Carmax for your cars....what's fair to the seller doesnt matter and should not matter moraly to the buyer...keep on paying asking prices for cars and trucks and houses for that matter....folks price things with room to move...if this mentality troubles you I have several things I'd like to unload on you for a "fair price".....my money is what matters...not this guys money or feelings....or whatever snowflake BS you are trying to promote...get a good deal...make a good fair offer...and steal it if you can..vehicles depreciate...they are nearly always a bad investment buddy

    You don't want a farm truck. You want a Brand new condition truck for 4,000. Had that Toyota pickup from 88 been for sale around here for grand it would have been gone. You want a mackdaddy 88 that's for sure!!

A farm truck around here is a Thousand dollar 4 wheel drive and that's all it is. You want a Pristine Cream Puff from 88.. go to the dealer and buy a new one "farmer"

    Toyota makes a GREAT truck but ill never own one because i cant see paying 5-6k on a 30 year old truck with 250000 mileswhen 2-3k will buy a 15 year old dodge/ford/chevy. Not knocking them, just people want more than i feel like theyre worth.

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree....and I also think that somehow folks think they are more truck than they really are....these models are know for rust issues...just like this one had...I made him a fair offer and it would have made a great farm beater....but that's what the truck was worth on a good day...the dude was full of crap...and the truck was not what he portrayed...if it was 100% like new or close...$5,500 at best ...if it was moderately ok....mechanically sound...not pouring oil and rusty....$4000--$4500....and if it was leaky, squeaky and had crappy body work...$2500! That's what I offered..he was asking $4500 and told me he turned down $4k...once again another lie!!

    • @ericchapman8956
      @ericchapman8956 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stoney Ridge Farmer I wouldn't have offered that even. I learned to drive stick in a Toyota and they're great but a Nissan, Ranger, Mitsubishi, etc. can be picked up for $1,500 that do not need much of anything and in the long run are pretty much the same for half the price. $3000 will buy a nearly flawless Nissan or Mitsu of the same year. Had many Nissans and i didnt love them but they never broke down. Paid $2,300 for my 01 Ram and it runs and drives like new doesnt look perfect but has good paint and decent body and Toyotas are great trucks but value wise, theu aren't worth the money. They're popular because thats what highschoolers drive and park in the Walmart parking lot and the only reason theyre worth so mucb is because people decided they were based on popularity.

      Plus, one of the MOST DEPENDABLE trucks ive ever had i paid 500 bucls for and drove it home. 1980 K10 Chevy with a 292 straight 6 and 3 on the tree. It was ugly but it ran like brand new.

    There are a bunch of scammers out there. My 2002 dodge I was told was maintained, but after I got it home and got to using it. Valve covers leak, coolant reservoir leaked, air conditioning didn't work, leaf springs bent, and more. I've only had the truck 2 years and now it's just parked for parts. It sucks. Hope you found a good farm truck.

      Yeah, but all of his points are just guesses really. No facts pointing to this guy actually trying to "scam" anyone. Not much to these trucks. Crawl underneath it and look at it if you want to know if its been in a wreck. He seems to be kinda picky for just a "farm truck". 4k doesn't seem to bad to me either way. These trucks in parts alone are worth a decent amount.
