Been a production machinist for the past 28 yrs and no it is not a rip off for something made in America. The cheap Chinese machined stuff being imported from overseas has us spoiled. Do something for the republic and buy American.
Love this lighter, love Exotac. I have kickstarted all of their products they made that way and own everything they make. Great quality stuff made in the US.
Here's a thought. Take a Nite Ize Sbinder, hook it to the Exotac top. Take a Metal Pill Bottle, fill it with a Fire Starter. Clip them together and put in your Pocket. Voila! Fire Kit.
Regarding their Fire Sleeve, I saw this in a different video and had to have it. Ordered two. They are excellent for their main purpose. Though have noticed that it can be a very tight fit getting a standard Bic to fit. The Bics with a paper design wrapped around the lighter create just a tiny bit more friction when inserting them. I'd recommend going with the smooth single colors with no paper-wrap on the lighter. Main issue with the Fire Sleeve I found is that the little cover that comes over to hold down the red button of the Bic so the flame stays on.... Yeah, too stiff. You can get it to work, but don't be surprised if it takes several attempts. Easiest way is to use the little cover first, then try to move the wheel to get it to light. even then, the little cover gets in the way of the wheel, and the little cover tends to slip off after you rotate the wheel. THAT always on feature is a gimmick. But the sleeve itself does make your Bic waterproof. So now you have a lighter that will never have the fuel inside evaporate on you, and is now waterproof. Yeah, one is going in my BOB as my back-up lighter and the other one is in my work-bag just in case. And even though it uses non-refillable Bic lights, the sleeves themselves are refillable. (Just toss in a new Bic when the old one is out of fuel.)
I use a Zippo with a piece of bike inner tube slid up around the seam.Lights for months.Lotion like Oil of Olay under the ribber inner tube sleeve makes it slide easily.Yes waterproof too and in ONE piece.
Have you tried the electronic lighters? Waterproof and windproof supposedly. I got 2 of them for about $20 on Amazon, so they're extremely cheap. I haven't really tested them, but it stays lit in a pretty good breeze. The waterproof part, I haven't tried at all. They charge from a USB port, so if you have a small solar charger, it should last indefinitely without worrying about fuel or flints. Might be worth a review in the future.
Great review. I really like it and it seems like a great product. That being said, i don't see what big advantage it has over the Peanut XL or even the Numyth Tohil which are both less than half the price(maybe a review should be in order comparing those similar style of lighters? just a thought). If it was around $30 or so, i might grab it, but at $50 that's just a deal breaker. That being said, thanks for reviewing it.
I think it's really and for 50 it's not to bad considering the other options out there and with this one being well attest looking a lot better then others.
They're kind of expensive UNTIL you realize ZIPPO fuel is $80 a gallon, and they evaporate and wear with time making fuel retention even more sketchy. If you top off a Zippo every other day and use one you quickly realize that ZIPPO makes money off fuel , flint and wick. You can ranger band one or wrap it in a condom, but they still evaporate over time. This lighter is better suited for outdoor emergency fire starting in harsh environments unless you have a short butane torch handy😂 I've had mine a month. Filled it when I got it and used it. A few extra drops after heavier use because I'm neurotic about it😂No leaks or evaporating. Fill it right. Wipe the lighter after fueling and your hands, just like a ZIPPO, you're fine. Get a few extra o rings and cotton balls, flint and wicks, cause you won't be spending $20 a quart on lighter fluid😁And I love ZIPPO/CASE BTW...Great American Company.
Hey Sootch! Just wanted to come back by and say I've had one of my TitanLights get lost, found it over a year and a half later. Lit right up. I love my Maratac Brass XL peanut but dude...carry a Zippo fuel canister and a couple o rings #35 and flints under the bottom cap these things are hard to beat
I think people are correct, it is expensive. I bought one during their 20% off Black Friday sale. They have a SOOTCH15 code for 15% off. If you figure any kind of semi decorative zippo is over $20 and the really fancy ones are over $30. It’s not so bad when you think about the waterproofness and fuel retention. Makes it a good lighter for hiking or prepping.
Had mine over a year so far sitting in my bag & still lights up every time. Seems the fuel will get burned by using it instead of evaporation as long as the O-ring is in good shape. I ordered replacement O-rings for it.
Like Zippos, you carry spare flints underneath the first layer of... insulation (the fluffy stuff that absorbs the fluid), I've always carried at least 3 to 5 spare flints inmy zippos. As for fluid running dry, sure it'll happen eventually but that's why you refill your lighter before planned outings. Running out of fluid in an unplanned/emergency scenario, that's the whole reason we carry redundant back-up devices (extra lighters, storm proof matches, ferro rods, etc).
I keep a small 3 dollar peanut lighter on my keychain. It fills the same roll for way less. Cool product though, just too expensive. Reminds me of the lightning strike fire starter, good product, bad price point. If money was no object, I would get one.
And how exactly is this different from Zippo other than roughly 35 dollars more?...same kind of flint, cotton and fluid as well as aluminum construction
thanks you for the video. I wonder how long does the fluid stays in there without using it. A year like Douglas Field S ? and also how long does it take that 3ml to burn out?
#SensiblePrepper How would you compare this to the numyth lighters I've seen in several of your videos? Seems like a similar concept. Keep up the great work man!
I find $50.00 a bit much for a lighter. Additionally, you have to carry fuel, extra flints and wicks. If you lose the top, then it's just another lighter. At least the Zippo has a top that is fastened. They should have added another small watertight compartment below the fill access containing 2 wicks and 2 flints. JMHO. Thanks for sharing and have a Merry Christmas.
William Logan Zippo leaks out in about a week. At leat this is waterproof and the o ring would help with leaking. Zippos are about 12 bucks. I think thats way over priced for what you get in a Zippo. A lighter that wont hold fluid. Id rather buy this once than 2 to 3 Zippos.
Yes to both ideas, Coleman fuel is a cheap alternative - although a bit smoky. The primary ingredient in lighter fluid is naphtha, it's super cheap at hardware stores - just look for "VM&P Naphtha" (varnish makers &, painters). Once you smell it you'll know it's the same stuff.
No one has ever conquered that you're grinding on a stone, flint, with sharpened steel. Dulls in time and doesn't spark. Replaceable flint required before I'll purchase any other expensive "trench" lighter. 124.00 on a Douglas to learn that. Loss. Let me know if things change. Thanks.
Hello: I Guess I am getting old, I don't know what he did wrong on this video. Well Guys and gals don''t forget your Tampons and dryer lint. Peoples painties get in a wad so easy.
No no no, not for 50 bucks. That is absolutely a ridiculus price for this. I know manufacturing and I know alum tubing and at this price it is a complete ripoff...good concept though.
Well there you go BD H, jump in there make it cheaper . Your in for a real shocker being and old tool and die guy around machining business most of my adult life . You have not a clue . You would be fare better to spend you lunch money on some water proof matches and be done it. Like most of us do even those of us out here who can afford it might not choose to just because it's 50 dollars when we can if we choose it's just the idea weave been using matches for ever, and the only time they fail is when the user screws up . Happy Trails young man
There are smaller versions of the same concept that's priced at $10ish. Let me ebay search real quick... Yup found a quite a few when I searched "water proof pocket lighter" for about $6 or less. I own one of these types and while the quality probably isn't up to Exotac, it functions just fine.

Indeed they should. There is not one piece of offensive content in this video (other than the cost of this thing). Rather, it is informative and educational and helps bring some awareness to the overpriced and useless items that have been hitting the market these days. Even a cheap ferro rod, a large bag of cotton balls, a bottle of mineral oil, and a small watertight container to carry the soaked balls in, for a total cost of $8.60, will enable you to light a thousand fires, and then some...with ease.
Woody Smith it is not. A zippo works great if you use it often. However it’s fuel evaporates quickly. I have had a titan light for about 5 weeks now. No fuel evaporation. I light it up a few times a week to check. Plus no water intrusion. It makes it a good choice for throwing into a bag and forgetting about it.

would the fuel eventually corrode the rubber?
Best Blooper EVER!!!!!
That was a great one ... thank you don
Does it take standard hippo flints ? Thanks
Adam Newman I’m sorry but I believe HIPPO flints are just to large.
Very good video
Would you say it was Heirloom quality? $50 over several generations is not to much.
How does it compare to the numyth in your opinion

thanks you for the video. I wonder how long does the fluid stays in there without using it. A year like Douglas Field S ? and also how long does it take that 3ml to burn out?
Does it take a special wick or flint?
i think it takes basic zippo flind and wick, im late but better than never
From 3:30-3:48 the audio is heavily distorted
do these use the same flints and wics as zippo?
Yes, there is only one size of each - been standard for over a hundred years.
#SensiblePrepper How would you compare this to the numyth lighters I've seen in several of your videos? Seems like a similar concept. Keep up the great work man!
Can I ask you Sootch, have you tried filling it with kerosene or diesel?
Whiskey would be more useful.
$50. is way too much. IMHO this is a $12.50 lighter. Are they made in Ga. or assembled in Ga. from imported parts?
I REALLY WANTED THIS LIGHTER.. BUT THEN SAW THE PRICE.. LOL.. I THINK A REGULAR BIC WILL BE FINE WITH ME..
just wrap insulation tape round a zippo.. 😁 I just put zippo in small sealy bag, also 50usd worth of bic lighters would make more sense..
