Great to hear your take on the usability and reasons you went with the LX470. We had one for a couple years and loved it. We're now in an LX570 the last 3yrs and love it just as much. Totally different feel between the two, but both amazing trucks in their own way.
Good Info. My family of six all drive LXs or LCs and have since 1996. 5 of 6 have over 300k miles with one rolling along with 466k miles. All of the negatives you mentioned are better than any other vehicle made. Overall there is no comparison to the low cost of ownership even with not getting 20 mpg. Btw, most anything will get 1/2 the normal mpg when pulling so much weight.
Having owned several Toyotas truck/SUV in the past, this is a good honest review.👍🏻

The hitch was placed in the bumper in some years so hopefully that won’t be too difficult to change. My brother’s 04 LX has the hitch in the bumper. Ya lockers will definitely make a big difference vs. ATRAC for harder wheeling. Great honest review! No fluffing things up and as a 100 owner and land cruiser enthusiast I agree with your evaluation of the 100.
Last year I bought an 06 4Runner with the same 4.7 V8 that's in this vehicle, with 200,000 miles. Considering that these things are typically good for 400k+, I'm pretty confident in my decision.
Downhill and Deadlifts bought an 03 V8 with 198K. Has 250K a year later and is serving me well!

Downhill and Deadlifts watch out for the cracking exhaust manifold, it’s a common problem with the v8 4Runner

Awesome review ... considered the LX470 as my overland rig, but ended up going with a gen1 Sequoia (4wd Limited, ATRAC etc). Didn't want to trailer and sequoias have a ton of space inside, the great 4.7 engine and was perfect on its first trip from LA to canyonlands and CO/AZ on a 17 day trip last month. Definitely felt like we were sitting on a couch like you said. 32" tires and fully loaded with camping gear, got btwn 17.5 and 17.8 mpg in 2wd on the fwy on several full tanks (TRYING for the best mileage, admittedly...so going the speed limit 😇). One cool thing about sequoias is 2wd/full time 4wd/center diff lock or low range options. Great for saving gas on fwy while still having a low range transfer case when it gets rough. I live out west, so really tight trails aren't much of an issue 😎
Love Land Rover LR4 and Discovery's, but decided Toyota or Lexus because I couldn't risk being stranded on White Rim road Canyonlands with a wife and 3 year old, haha.
Nibbix1313 how many miles you got on it. My gf (at that time) bought a 02 limited 2WD back in 05 with 60k miles. Went on so many family trips. Never had any issues other than the brake rotors getting warp. I’ve never replaced the starter, , alternator, water pump or timing belt. Finally had to put her down after 300K miles after it was stolen and interiors stripped and catalytic converter cut off.
kidmoua bought it a year ago with 150K miles and a good service history. Now it's at 160K after a couple trips to San Francisco and the 4 corners region last month. Lots of local 4WD roads in SoCal as well. With 10.6 inches of ground clearance (not a typo), I would leave it in 2wd oftentimes and it would go much further up trails than i expected. Other than the hummer H1, only the 80 series land cruiser have and brand new wrangler JL have more ground clearance stock, and by just 0.2 inches. The Sequoia actually has better ground clearance than all the IFS SUV's (100 and 200 series Land Cruiser's, Land Rovers, Hummer H1 and H3, keep commander, etc) and most jeeps, stock, which shocked me (of course the sequoia is much BIGGER than a wrangler and has an independent front suspension, so it's not a rock crawler... but it's a FANTASTIC platform for overlanding).
Actually I had to replace the rear rotors too, and an oxygen sensor, but other than that it drives like new. The Sequoias are great and very capable on the larger 4x4 trails out west (they are also WAY underrated). Of course. Land Cruisers, 4Runners, Tacomas, Tundras and FJ's are great for overlanding too. Just depends on what the intended uses and plans are.

Great straight to the point and logical review of the beloved LC Lexus. There is a lot that factors into the MPG. I have a sequoia that is rated for 13 to 17 and have gotten up to 22 on the hwy. Think shoes (tires) and good maintenance and believe it or not good fuel. I only run chevron and I run 89. If I was to use my sequoia off road more often I would probably opt for a second set of shoes strictly for this purpose. I also own a Tundra with the same drivetrain and it only gets if I'm lucky about 17 on the hwy but I'm running BFG's TA KO's. Much heavier tire but great off road. I've owned Toyotas since 1986 and I don't think I would ever own any other vehicle. I'm not a Toyota fanatic but I am a fanatic of not begin stuck on the side of the road. I have owned other manufactures over the years and I have always gone back to Toyota.
I agree! I have a Toyota Pickup truck & a LX 470- it rides so well when on the hwys!
honestly this was an excellent choice for overlanding, add a locker and different bumpers for clearance and i think you'd be set

The Refrigerator door in GX460 AND 470 was first introduced by G Wagon.
After realizing we outgrow my Tacoma I started looking at tundras and used land cruiser 200 series. I really like toyota reliability but the tundra needs a update and with the crew cab the bed is 5'7 so I couldn't sleep comfortable in the bed. The land cruiser was supper comfortable and quiet but the price for a 5 year old cruiser with 50,000 miles was the same as a new leftover ram with a diesel needless to say I went new and almost a year later I don't regret it, 800 ft lbs of torque makes me giggle ever time I drive it.
I bought an 2011 lx570 2 yrs ago with 50k miles now it has 90 love it
One thing to keep in mind is that if you put larger tires on the vehicle, the average MPG in trip info will be incorrect. You are probably getting a little better (2-3 mpg) than what it is showing.
Good honest perspective, thanks. I'm seriously thinking about getting one I've got a Corolla with over 200k miles, I'll just use it as a beater and use the land cruiser for the weekend fun. I'm curious is the back is big enough to fit bikes in.
I've got an 08 Gen2 Sequioa with the 5.7 in it. 14ish around town. Last year I went to Utah, 5000 mile round trip with my 400+ lb dual sport on a hitch rack and got up 17.2 mpg. Hard to beat the ride and power of the Toyota SUVs
ive got an 04 4runner 4.7 v8. took a 3000 mile trip from mississippi to colorado this past summer. it only gets 15mpg around town 20-22 hwy depending on if you're driving 65 or 80. it felt like it was made to eat up highway miles. so comfortable as well.
I wonder how different this is from a Lexus GX470? I'm guessing smaller body?
mixflip The GX470 is a land cruiser prado (“light duty”) and if based off of the 4runner/FJ cruiser chassis. The LX470 is bigger and essentially a more luxurious land cruiser 100, with the same drivetrain and chassis. The later 100 series land cruisers came with AHC like the lx470 but most of the 100 series came with static suspension.
Although they both have the same engine (LX470/LC100 and GX470), the 2UZ-FE.
LX is the big brother to the GX
This is I believe unofficial and doesn’t appear in any Toyota or Lexus marketing, but Land Cruisers are supposedly engineered to last 25 years even with poor maintenance. This is because of the main clientele of the LC, such as the UN, which need that kind of reliability. It’s reassuring that the vehicle is built to a purpose rather than a price point.
The Land Cruiser that’s sent to the US, and the Lexus version of it, don’t necessarily need that extreme amount of reliability, but it’s already engineered in it. So options that are specific for North Americans that the UN would never need, such as DVD players and AHC, most likely aren’t engineered to that 25 year life standard.
But they’ll STILL be engineered to the Toyota/Lexus standard, which is pretty darn good.

This was lovely unbiased candid balanced review. How many miles do you have on this and would you know how much it will cost to repair/replace the suspension?
It has around 195k miles. I've seen them with over 300k though! Old Man Emu suspension is around $1500 for the parts, but you can easily spend a whole lot more! You could probably switch in suspension from a Land Cruiser for pretty cheap too.
Enjoy it. You’re gonna LOVE it. They’re beasts off-road. Nothing compares to the Cruiser. Nothing.
Nice video. We also have an Lx470, put 70k miles on it in the last 4 years and really didn’t need anything. Take a look at your CV boots as those are common failure points. We just replaced a CV axle at 160k miles.
I am happy with my 99 LC. One thing I hate is the gas mileage. But other than that it's an excellent truck.

Everything with overlanding seems to be a compromise between space vs. fitting on trails, and off road ability vs. on road comfort!
@@RevereOverland ha yep, got an LX myself that I picked up rough, and I definitely know even if it's a Land Cruiser, it's still got shortcomings for a 11-20 year old vehicle. My steering rack just blew yesterday and last month I had to do the ABS booster motor.
The longevity and quality of them is incredible, but they're definitely not indestructible like their reputation suggests!

Good review, thanks for sharing! I have a '96 LX450 and at 250k I'm now planning to upgrade to the 100 series. In terms of the offroad capability, I've read a fair amount about others swapping the front axle for the 80s compared to the independent front suspension. Personally, I don't care and will welcome comfort. Who needs to jack it up beyond 35" tires and a 3" lift? My first car was a Wrangler and there's a reason I wasn't a repeat buyer. Comparing this to a Wrangler is pretty funny.

Absolutely! I just did the radiator and head gasket and rebuilt the birfs. But, three growing kids and time to pass it along to someone that wants to offroad.

Yeah dude good choice. A lot of people aren't aware that is a Land Cruiser with better interior. Many cases you can score one for cheap from a soccer mom lol. I have a 96 4Runner 4x4 that I constantly off road and take to Baja with 332K miles on it. Only issue with it at the moment is the steering rack has a torn boot. Easy fix. It's not often you need repair Toyota's compared to other off-road options.

Crawl control wasn't available on the LX470! I think it was introduced on the LX570. The 470 does have ATRAC though, which works really well - especially when you use the center lock!
Even when I was towing a heavy trailer with two motorcycles I never got below 12mpg. I usually see 18mpg as my daily driver. I suspect these super low numbers are being caused by bigger tires and stuff like rooftop tents. At 80mph this brick is going to get crap mileage, but add those two factors and I can see single digit numbers.
It seems like the things that bother you are the same things that would bother my wife (DVD player) ...... I actually prefer not breaking down in the middle of nowhere .
zkppy I am the person taking in the video. The reason I love the cruiser is it’s reliability, but I felt like I should point out things like the DVD player in case it is important to someone. Also, watch Revere Overland’s video “resting Lexus”. The LX470 did break down in the middle of no where. One time at the top of engineers pass.

How are those K02's treating you. I have heard they knock about 1 mph off on the LX470/LC100. Any thoughts on the Revo3, or your 2nd choice behind the KO2's. Or maybe a recommendation for a 90% highway, 10% off road?
The KO2s are amazing. They're super quiet on the road, and perform well off road. Everyone has their preferences, but I won't get anything else. Your speed won't read right any time you get larger tires.
The size is why I love the GX. Feels like the Goldilocks size wise.

Everyone has different preferences, but this is how I see it:
LX470/Land Cruiser is best for people with families or multiple passengers, people who need the V8 power, or for people who want the luxury.
The 4Runner is a great alternative if you don’t need the space or power. You can usually get a little newer and lower miles for the same price, and save money on gas with the V6.
I don’t know a lot about Sequoias. I’m sure they’re great vehicles, but probably lack the aftermarket support of the Land Cruiser and 4Runner.
I got 10.6 pulling my 20fb Airstream.
My dad used to occasionally run 87 grade fuel in his and it killed his catalytic converter. With his car in CA it was an expensive fix.
Good review, they do drink like a fish. The older 4.5ltr i6 was about 25% worse mpg
Just look up high ride hitch lexus GX, there are a few vendors with hitches that are higher up

Dang, my 05 LX470 consistently gets 16mpg or better. Even when I was towing a trailer with 2 bikes on it from Charlotte to Denver I still saw 12mpg. You might want to check something on your rig. Tire pressure? I'm usually up around 40psi. Then again it could just be extra drag from the rack and bigger tires?
His is modified and he is carrying alot more weight over stock. Even a diesel would get worst mpg with more weight and larger tires

Hmmm, my 2003 Lexus LX470 gets 20-23 mph on the freeway. Wonder why your mileage is so poor? I have owned mine for 17yrs and don’t plan on selling it any time soon. Put 257K miles on it and getting ready to change the timing belt for the second time; $1,400 kind of expensive but includes water pump...I change it every 130,000 miles whether it needs it or not, LOL! The EPA mpg ratings for a LX470 are 13/17 so there's zero chance you're getting that kind of gas mileage unless you swapped in a different motor than the original 2UZ. Also, 2UZ timing belts are recommended they be done at 90K intervals, so you're pushing by a lot keeping the belt on that long. Not trying to rain on your parade, but would hate for someone else to be misinformed by this info.
You indicated when towing a heavy load, you had to redistribute and/or drive in low mode.
1) doesn’t the vehicle automatically change from low to normal at 17 or 18 mph, without any override option?
2) my ‘08 lx570 has a tow cap of 8500. I pull roughly 3500-4000lbs max. Do I need to make any mods for that weight range?

1) Yes. But AHC has it limits. The LX570 and ROTW LC200's AHC is more robust than the 100 series AHC.
2) You are well below the tow limit on the 08+ LX570 so you don't need any additional mods. Lexus derated the tow rating to 7100# in later year LX570, same AHC, because people were towing at 8000#+ and running into AHC errors. LX570 have softer springs (than LC200) and AHC has to compensate a lot of weight when you are towing > 700# of tongue weight + 650# of payload inside the vehicle (total payload is ~1350 stock). To bring the tow rating to where the standard LC200 without AHC is (8200#), you need to upgrade the springs or upgrade to armored vehicle AHC ($$$). It is much cheaper to buy heavier duty springs (Icon dual rate progressive springs, OME 2721, 2722 and higher). The HD springs will handle the extra weight and the AHC will not have to work as hard to maintain height. This also applies to LX470/LC100 with AHC.

@@imwuz Most Lexus and Toyota dealerships don't deal with AHC since it is only available on the few Land Cruiser and LX470/LX570 that the mechanics will ever see. If you have any AHC issues, the dealership will likely replace the entire AHC pump and assembly than go through the troubleshooting process. The most common issue with AHC is not routinely changing out the fluid (~60,000 mi normal or 30k if off-roading heavily) and blockage at the AHC pump from debris (solution is to clean the pump filter). All of which can be DIY for less than $150 USD.

I’m looking to move to a 4.7 Toyota either the 4th gen 4Runner or the 100 series like yours.
For entertainment you could rig an ipad to the dvd screen.
That fuel economy made me gasp audibly. Our F150 does way better. 13 in town, 17 on the highway (if I’m driving). I bet most of that is because of the mass of that vehicle. I think the 4Runner with that engine foes better.

I bet you the 100/LX470 is better off road than the 4th gen 4Runner. It also has more space and far more luxury and comfort! The LX470 does really well on washboard roads, where in other vehicles it's torture. The gas mileage though... It's bad!
@@RevereOverland That's a testable hypothesis. I bet the LC is nicer and more comfortable most of the time. But when it comes down to 4 wheeling, I bet the 4R is going to beat out the LC because it's just smaller and more nimble. But not that much. The mileage is horrifying really. The 4R is 1000 # lighter, but still. I know dudes running Overlanding setups on 5th gen 4runners are getting crappy mileage too. That's a huge plus for the 3rd gen. I get 17 in town and 19-20 on the highway and 14 on the trail. My only significant complaint is that mine is old and deteriorating.
Totally agree with size/weight. I've wheeled in my Jeep with a bunch of 80/100 series Land Cruisers and there have been a multiple times where I've easily gone through something they've struggled with. That being said, they do better than my Jeep in general. For stock vs. stock my money would be on the LC/LX470!
I think ultimately it comes down to the size of your family! If there are 5 of you, LC/LX470 all the way. If it's just 2, then the 4Runner could be the more sensible choice.
@@RevereOverland Interesting. We just saw a fairly stock XJ do really well on a SUPER gnar trail here. I should have that video out this week. It's the second part of the Snake Lake Trail. It was a super junky $400 craigslist job. Walked right up the hardest part of the road out.
I'm looking forward to seeing it. That trail looked tough, and I know the camera makes everything look easier than it actually is!
Can somebody address what he is referring to about the Regular vs Premium gas causing problems?
I'm not sure of the exact details, but it's something about vaporlock at high altitudes. Apparently a higher quality fuel helps!
I have a GX470 and we have the same 4.7L engine. I always used regular 87 octane gas. Recommended it doesn't mean you have to. This engines were also fited on the tundra (working trucks), 4runners, designed to use regular 87 gas. If you do the regular maintenance and use quality 87 gas you'll be fine. I get 21/22mpg on Hwy, has 143k on the engine and I off road to. They are great!
I'm 99% sure your low fuel economy is due to a stuck piston on one of your brake calipers. It's a super common problem, and very easy to fix. Great review otherwise, I have 2 of them and I'm looking for a 3rd.
G80 locker. Not air not electronic but automatic. Got 1 in my Chevy it just works when a wheel spins
How is it for a daily? I always imagine they're a pain in the snow on the road.
@@RevereOverland G80 lockers aren't the best for longevity from my experience. They have lots of small moving parts. They have lobes that lock the axle with the centrifugal force from the axles spinning at different speeds. The centrifugal lobes are much like a mechanical advance system on an old distributor. G80's are very nice for occasional use, but I wouldn't want to use it off-road much, personally, mainly because of all the small parts. They are quite good for road use and bad weather driving. My father has a G80 in his van and he touts its praises. All depends on how you use the vehicle.
An Eaton Detroit Trutrac is pretty good for the road driving since it uses simple frictional force between meshed helical cut gears. They're not very complicated at all. The more you get on the gas, the more it binds up. If you're not on the gas very much it acts almost exactly like a normal open differential. Very good for on-road/off-road use. Also not too expensive, at about $500.

There is no perfect vehicle. There is a vehicle best for each specific situation. However, all break down. They're made by men and will always need repairs. That said you said it yourself. Maintain the LC and it'll last you 400,000-500,000 miles. Maybe even more. I currently own a 2003 WJ Limited V8. Oil pan and gaskets just kicked the bucket. I don't trust Jeep much since the 00s and have little need for a Wrangler so I'm looking at 4Runners, GX470, and GX460. I'm second owner of WJ. It's over 159k miles and now I want to try some overlanding. I think Toyota is a more reliable company than Fiat-Chrysler(I know it was bought recently) and I want the vehicle to last at least 10 years. Honda and Toyota are the only two brands I see that do that well across their vehicle lines. Still see Camry and Civic vehicles from 80s and 90s on the road. Sounds like besides some minor inconveniences it's a great vehicle.
Good honest review. 👍 as far as vehicle's go, we all get called to certain things. And i like that. I like the diversity. I love my 05 v8 grand Cherokee. I had to get rid of my 2000 grand Cherokee while back and missed the jeep ever since. Get in a wreck in a small car that i had. When looking to replace it, i was gonna get another car. I scrolled passed the my now 05 grand cherokee and just couldn't get it out of my head. Glad i got it. I plan on keeping it till it falls apart.

Yeah you def should, there are some really nice spots on the beaches here. My wife and i went lasg year shortly after i got the wk. Had no idea what we were doing lol. But it worked. We just slept in the back. But next time were gonna do it right. With a tent lol.
What are the best beaches to camp on? We've visited the OBX before, but I'm not sure about where you can camp out there.

@@jaymoar3561 Range Rovers after 2006 with the Ford (Jaguar) V8 are very reliable vehicles and make over 400HP- they're inexpensive to obtain now and with normal maintenance the Ford (Jaguar) engines are fantastic. Supercharged they make over 500HP- LOT's of aftermarket support and just overall good trucks. Most of the reliability issues were from when BMW owned them- I know- ask me how- but the later versions have all proved to be terrific engines.
Rather than a built in DVD, get a Galaxy Tab and do a custom mount. Far more versatile. If you're Apple happy, go that way then.
Excellent review- don't let all the dipshits below tell you otherwise. Your review included everything- you were not whining- you were providing an honest non-fanboy review of a truck that is over hyped by fan boys. I think the mileage issue is a huge- overlooked problem with all these Toyota's- if your only getting 10-12 MPG it can't really be considered for overlanding in any way- without at a minimum adding a new or auxiliary Long Range Fuel Tank. Less then 300 miles on a tank of gas is TERRIBLE- hell my LR Discovey gets 15MPG on 33's and it's horrible MPG. Although- if you want to spend the money a LRFT could get you another 180- 200 miles on a single fill up- check out Oxoverlanding's Lexus- they didn't that and get really long ranges- although at the same 10MPG it's hella expensive to do it! But otherwise- excellent and fair review.
Whats that 4.0 get in full economy?
My 2008 4runner with the 4.0 V6 gets 17ish daily driving, 21 straight highway. It's a nice engine. Never towed with it though.
The lx470 and Lc 200 are great vehicles, but they get such horrible mpg’s by modern standards...that’s their main drawback.

No, but we think it was a combination of the fuel and the altitude. The LX470 requires premium, and doesn't like the ethanol.

We just waited 10 minutes each time and it started right back up like there was nothing wrong.
Because Toyota is the true most dependable longest lasting not Chevy as they're new commercial states !! My 1993 Toyota landcruiser 80 series had 500k miles on it when I sold it in 2010, it never had a problem only the driver side window motor and fan blower had to be changed ! It spent most of its life in one of the most unforgiving environments known to man the arctic circle! I hear it is still running strong till this day !!
I have a 2002 Land Cruiser with 318K miles.....and its the most reliable vehicle i had

Wes has a heavy foot, which probably doesn't help! When I drove his LX I got about 13mpg. Either way, the mpg is probably worse than your FJ... But the LX will be SO much more comfortable!

FJ, GX and 4Runner all get shit gas mileage, maybe only 1-2 more mpg than the LX, that's why I bought the LX. I have a corolla for my 20 mile commute, but for everything else I drive the LX.

This one is in perfect shape, but I looked at one where I could poke holes in the frame. The rear end of the frame seems most susceptible.
@@RevereOverland There are definitely a few spots to watch out for. I have a 2003 LX470 with 175,000 miles on it. Luckily, no rust anywhere much to my surprise. (1) the rear window near the corners, (2) where the front fenders brackets are on the sheet metal via vibration it will wear thru the galvanized coating (3) behind the rear bumper sheet metal, (4) check for water leaks from an improperly installed front windshield (only really good expert glass shops take the time to read the procedure). I have had 1 LX470 and 1 LC100 with improperly installed windshield that lets water in and causes rust (5) rear window areas near the back corner (I think it is thin paint in that area). If you can, remove the plastic on the inside of your rig (very carefully, and spray a rust inhibitor )
check for water leaks through the bolts that secure your roof cargo rack. If you take one out, you will likely see corrosion. I took my out and coated it with polyurethane sealant.
. BTW, have you considered a supercharger or turbo? What size tires do you use? Oddly enough, the 2003 has a trailer hitch inside the bumper not like yours. Also, the DVD player is in the headrest of the front seats with DVD control through the CD player changer in the central console. It is odd that Lexus changed a good setup on later years ??
In the middle east the hitch always came in the bumper I don't know why north America doesn't have it that way.

@@RevereOverland They had the same setup in the states for certain years, but all 100s have that same crossmember under the bumper cover. If you want to remove your frame-mounted hitch and use the crossmember instead you'd just need to change the bumper cover and bolt on the toyota adapter. It's only rated to tow 5k lbs this way vs the 6.5k stock though.
It gets better gas mileage than my Newll motor coach so I’m happy! Lol

Do you think the jeep is better off road than the LX470??
Are we talking Wes' XJ, or my WK? Stock vs. stock the WK (with the Hemi) is the best off road, followed by the LX470, with the XJ coming in last. The LX470 definitely has the most ground clearance though.

Wesam Mansour this is my LX470. My xj was better offroad because it had MT’s 15” rims front and rear locker. I would disagree with Rob slightly above. I would say it’s a tie between the WK and cruiser. His lockers are superior to the atrac , but his clearance sucks so he gets turtle backed in places the LX won’t. To me the deciding factor between the two is if how many people / gear you need to carry.

The Lexus LX470 is the same as the Toyota Land Cruiser 100 series. The Lexus has a few more luxuries as standard, but they’re available on the Toyota.

THIS is the one I confused with the GX460 at first--- I CAN"T STAND the lift up back gate.. that's DUMB.. the rest may be good.. but that is a dealbreaker for me..

3400 vs 5800...do the math. 2 to 3 times more is quite the exaggeration . 171% weight at most, as mods will make the percentage less.
Michael Gabriel you are comparing stock to stock. My XJ had a lot of weight cut out of it I.e. sway bars, rockers cut and fold fender, front and rear bumper. My LX470 weighs over 6k lbs. I have a full size 33” spare on the roof, a large roof rack and a storage system in the back. My XJ weighed in right around 3000lbs and my cruiser is just over 6000lbs. As I said my cruiser weighs more than double my XJ. Now right before I sold my XJ I added a front and rear bumper and spare tire carrier, but i didn’t have much off-roading experience with that on it and have no idea how much it weighs
