    Excellent explanation and was exactly the problem that I was having. The other repair videos that I looked at talked about a damaged LCD screen and resoldering etc. but none of that was necessary for my problem.

      There's nothing wrong with using the speakerphone. What causes them to fail is too much charging, not using speakerphone.

    Thanks for this information. We have a Panasonic KX-TG6072 with 2 handsets -- Phone#1 is always on the base unit and Phone #2 is in another room on its own small stand. Phone #1 on unit dies out after 10-15 minute call (Phone #2 works properly). After watching this video, I have taken both phones off the bases. I hope that this resolves the problem.

    • @JordanU

    I have one of each of the phones in your video. The newest one looks exactly like the newer phone,and was bought 3 months ago. I am in the habit of putting it on charge every nite at bedtime,and have had issues with the microphone suddenly quitting while talking to someone on speakerphone. I wonder if it can be "retrained" if I let it lose charge until one bar is shown?

    Thank you for the video, Jordan. I was having the same issue with my phone going out when I pressed the speaker phone. I realized I was placing the phone back in the base right after I would use it, so maybe I did overcharged the batteries. I was about ready to get rid of it if it had not been for your video. This phone was purchased at a thrift store and I didn't have the user manual so I looked for one online. Something confusing is that in that manual it actually says...Even after the handset is fully charged, the handset can be left on the base unit or charger without any ill effect on the batteries. My hand set is the number KX-TGA931T. I'm a bit confused about the battery charging now. I'm going to try keeping it off the base and run down the batteries, then replace them if necessary.

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm glad the video was helpful to you.. I have the KX-TGA931T and I also got it second-hand,, and the batteries were bad.. You will see different manuals say different things.. Many of them also suggest replacing the batteries after only a year,, so by leaving it on charge they certainly don't expect it to last real long.. I do believe the manufacturers aren't completely truthful about the batteries anymore,, if you look in older telephone manuals when they were built with better quality,, they usual have an explanation about the battery memory effect and how to avoid it..
      I've found the method I discussed in the video to work best for me,, so that's what I recommend doing.. Unfortunately once the phones develop this problem,, there is nothing you can do with the batteries to reverse their decline in capacity.. They must be replaced..

    • @theresaim6660
      @theresaim6660 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jordan. I appreciate the additional information. I'm to the point that I've had so many issues with this phone that I am calling it quits. For the amount of money I am spending on periodic new batteries I decided to just buy a different phone. Your video did help in understanding the issues and in making the decision to move on. I really like the phone, but too many issues with it. Thanks, again.

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately the Panasonic AAA batteries are quite expensive to replace,, generally costing about $5 for 2 (enough for one phone),, where the 2-AAA packs used by Vtech,, AT&T,, Uniden etc.. are often able to be found for less than 2 dollars each.. From my experience,, they also last a lot longer.. What telephone did you decide to get?

    • @theresaim6660
      @theresaim6660 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jordon. Funny that you should mention, VTech. Today I gave up and bought the Vtech CS6829 from WalMart. I bought the Panasonic because I have other ones in the house which work great. Previously, I had a Vtech, but it didn't have a speakerphone, which I really needed. I'm going to give this unit a try and see how it works. I looked at the thrift store, but there were no used phones available and I couldn't wait any longer. The Panasonic went crazy the other day and the LED kept flashing off and on. Enough is enough, I felt it was time to move on. With tax it was around $30.00. Received good reviews too.

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Theresa Im I have a similar model Vtech.. Its been a good phone and I haven't had any battery problems.. Its not the best quality phone out there,, but I feel you definitely get your money's worth.. eBay has a lot of used phones and you can usually find a good deal on just about any model..

Could it be batteries also?

    Replaced my rechargeable batteries on KXTG7621 cordless phone system, and now there is no sound. can't hear ringing or the answering speech when I call an outside phone. But if outside phone calls me, I hear the ring and can be heard speaking. the same on all 4 phones although on one phone only there is a symbol in the upper left corner of a bell with a slash through it and it looks like a small 2 just right of that. Any thoughts?

    • @JordanU

    I'm amazed at the comments - I would have thought most people have heard about memory effect by now....BUT - I don't know anyone who does not replace their handset on its cradle after a call and I have done this for more than 10 years with my Panasonic (X3) And only one of my handset has lost its display (This is why I'm here reading your tips) During this period of time I have changed the battery only once. (and very occasionally saw a request for charge) I also would have thought Panasonic would tell us not to replace the phone on the cradle until asked for recharge - If so you'd think they'd provide us with a 'siesta' cradle pending recharge request... I still thank you for your effort but no help in that for my gone display.
    BTW this handset despite no display works ok if I know the number i want to ring, or if I answer it when it rings as it is in my garage / workshop

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you read closely through the manual (which most users don't), the proper way to charge is noted.. In your case, if the display failed but the phone is still otherwise functional, it's not a battery issue.. I've seen that happen on 2 Panasonic phones I've used, after some time the displays came back just as mysteriously as they failed.. At this time I am unsure of what the cause, or the solution, is regarding that failure..

    • @meeekstubbular
      @meeekstubbular 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JordanU Thank you for taking the time and effort to reply. Actually I may have read this in my manual but did not take much notice of it...As said most people don't care about this. As for me I changed my 3 batteries in 2015 with a note on them for reminder.
      Yes you're probably right about mysterious, when i reassembled the phone not seeing anything much about it. The display now is back! It did happen once out of the blue but lasted one day only.
      I also read somewhere that taking the battery out for a while and back in does sometime revive the display! I also noticed that my battery (4 y old now ) have a very low reading, yet you are saying one should wait until the msg to recharge comes so that also should be a low battery state?
      Thank you again anyway:) I guess my phone is 10 15 years old

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Removing and replacing the battery will discharge and recharge the capacitors, which can have an effect on the behavior of the device in some cases..
      Once you've removed and reinserted the battery, you will receive an inaccurate charge level reading from the phone until it's been charged up again.. Every few weeks you should let the battery run out completely..

    • @meeekstubbular
      @meeekstubbular 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JordanU I do remember reading about the memory effect. I wonder why they can' t use Lithium in phone as they don't have this problem?

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@meeekstubbular I imagine it's mostly a cost issue; the nickel batteries are old technology and relatively inexpensive compared to lithium batteries.. From a technical standpoint, lithium batteries aren't the best for something that spends a lot of time on charge as they can't be float-charged..
      The whole memory phenomenon is actually very mysterious, while there's plenty of cases where it makes an appearance, it's hard to consistently and intentionally replicate it.. NiMh batteries are supposed to be more resilient against the memory effect, it's primarily the NiCd type that's known for memory.. The phones used to almost always come with NiCd, in more recent times they're more consistently coming with NiMh.. There's a handful of sets out there that do use lithium batteries, but the models are very, very far and few between.. I personally do not recommend the use of lithium batteries for an application like a cordless phone..

It started fading for a couple of days and then on the 3rd day it is totally blank (like in your video after you click the speakerphone; but instead it is all the time even when it is on the cradle). I have tried swapping the batteries from the one handset that works to the other two but they are still blank. And the batteries that were in the bad handsets work fine with the one handset where the lcd still works. All 3 handsets still work fine (for receiving and making calls), but nothing is displayed ever on screen. Thoughts?

      I've seen a number of cases where the screens suddenly go out completely (which is a different issue than seen in this video) with seemingly no explanation. Often times the screens will start working some time later, just as mysteriously as they quit. This seems to be a bigger issue with many of the 5.8 GHz models, but I have heard of it a few times on the model you're referring to. I don't know what causes it, and at this time I am not aware of a proper resolution for it. My only suggestion would be to unplug everything and remove all batteries, let it sit for a few days then try again. Or just keep using as normal, chances are it will fix itself in a few weeks.

    Jordan, I have the newest model black Panasonic phone. You are correct about "Overcharging" the batteries. I purchased mine in 2012. Never had a minutes problem with handset and speakerphone. I buy model: KX-TGE273S (3 handsets) because I wanted the link-to-link feature. Well, I opened box and hooked it up had a problem with Speakerphone. Had to put volume all the way up to hear my caller. Bottom line Jordan, my older 2012 model speakerphone was EXCELLENT (NO BUZZING) But thismodel KX-TGE273S has distorted problem with speakerphone. Plus, just found out this is #1 phone for 2016 reviews Jordan, surprisingly people don't use speakerphone. They must be using ear to phone talking. Jordan, bottom line Panasonic is not the Quality as they were in 2012. I have sent the KX-TGE273S back to Walmart and am trying another link-to-link model. That model is: KX-TG454sk - This is link to link, but is an older model with 4 handsets. I paid $130.00 on ebay for this model. This will be my last attempt to purchase a Panasonic home phone. I hope this model is a whole whole lot better. Hey, you can help me if you can find anything or your opinion on this model. Thanks Jordan for all your Reviews. Your findings on Panasonic's quality decline are pretty accurate to what I have seen.. Many of their DECT 6 phones were good quality,, but once they released DECT 6 Plus,, quality went out the window.. That was right around 2012..
      Personally I would have stayed far away from the KX-TG454SK.. That model was designed after Panasonic's era of quality passed.. If you want one of those Bluetooth linking phones,, I'd suggest you look for an older model from the late 2000s,, or go with a different brand..

    Hey Jordan U,
    I have been having problems with my wireless Panasonic home phone. (1 base that hooks up to my modem and 3 other ones that just plugs in wherever I want to put them)
    Here's my problems:
    1. When I'm talking to someone else, apparently my conversations goes in and out and I have to repeat myself again every 30 seconds to a minute. I was told by a geek squad person who works at Best Buy, that it might be the signal from my modem and phone is interfering with each other.
    2. Also, I recently viewed your video on the Panasonic phones and learned that it's not a good idea to put the phone back on the base, especially if you don't talk much. Now, with that being said, whenever I do put the phone back on the charger, it starts blinking and beeping.
    Do you have any suggestions on what is going on? I live in a mobile home and was wondering if I would go and get a newer phone (probably Vtech 6.0) would this solve the problem?
    ... And what's the best way to set up the phone? Where should I put the base in conjunction with the other 3 phones?

      When I first purchased the phones, it was a pair of four. Approximately 14 to 16 months later, one of the phones that just docks on a charger, was unplugged and the batteries were removed from the phone, due to the fact that this particular phone was acting weird, doing the same thing that happened later with the other phones, also, this particular phone somehow lost the microphone capabilities. I could hear the other party, however, they couldn't hear me, even just a little.
      When I unplugged the base and removed the batteries earlier, at first, I thought that this would cause a problem with the signal on the other three phones, but for at least 10 months, everything was fine, until about the middle of February, Which was the blinking of the lights and the beeping sound every 2 seconds.
      As far as I know, there has not been any thing that I've done that would have an impact on the phone.

      sharpasatac131 That model operates at a different frequency than the cordless computer networks and should not have any interference with it, even if placed in close proximity to it. Even so, placing the main transmitting base in a different part of the house is always good practice.
      You can try cleaning the charge contacts in attempt to resolve the charging issue, but as far as the audio issue goes, I think you may just have a lemon. That particular phone is newer than what I typically work with so I’m not too familiar with all of its common issues but a brief search through some reviews revealed what you described is not unheard of.

    If you google "cordless phone blank screen" almost every result is about Panasonic. And the suggested solutions are all over the map from (1) buy a new battery, (2) replace the screen, (3) rewire the circuit board, (4) wait a while and it will suddenly fix itself, etc etc.
    Mine just started doing this after 5 yrs of working fine. But the screen does display properly for a few seconds every now and then, and when it does i notice the battery indicator is pretty low, like maybe 20%.
    My suggestion is to try and completely drain the battery, which I guess means talking to your mother-in-law until the phone goes dead. And then do a total recharge. The reason i suggest this is that i've always heard that rechargable devices (not just phones) need to be fully drained before recharging, at least occasionally.

    I wonder why more phones don't use Lithium Ion batteries. Those seem to be almost completely resistant to the memory effect.

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They're not practical for a cordless phone because they can't be float-charged.. A Ni-Mh or Ni-Cd battery can be float charged; while the handset is in the cradle and fully charged, a very small amount of power will continue to run through the battery to maintain the full charge.. You cannot do this with a lithium battery.. A lithium battery charger will cut all charging power when the battery reaches full capacity, once it drains down to 95% more or less, it will start charging back to full, then cut the power again.. This will wear out the battery over time because it is constantly using up cycles.. There's also a function of cost, ancient Ni-Cd batteries are much cheaper than Li-Ion batteries, though the price has been coming down more recently.. I'm no fan of Lithium-based batteries.. In my opinion, their benefits do not outweigh their dangers.. I'll take a Ni-Mh battery, which is also resilient to memory, over Li-Ion any day..

    REALLY appreciate this video. But now can you please help me? You mentioned (@7:52) that you were going to make a video about how to purchase replacement batteries. Did you do this video? I cannot find it.Because my phones were behaving like in the video, I ordered 2 new Panasonic (#29) batteries from an eBay seller and charged them etc. as instructed. But these batteries (while lasting a bit longer) when getting low, just suddenly drop the call/go blank/lose connection with base - with no warning of any kind. Both batteries in both handsets (interchanged also) - where the handsets were perfectly fine before. The seller has offered to replace or refund. I paid more to get these legitimate "Panasonic" batteries so now I'm not sure if I should just get a refund and buy some other brand. Can you please advise? Would you give the Panasonic seller another chance or is there another brand that is as good or better as you mentioned. (I am in Canada if that changes my options.) Thank you.

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately I have not yet gotten around to that video..
      Can you provide me with the model number of your phone?
      When it comes to rechargeable batteries,, you must cycle them (fully charge, then fully discharge) several times, I'd say at least 5, before they will reach normal capacity.. Any time before those cycles have completed,, the batteries may behave unpredictably, and/or suddenly drop charge..
      With that being said,, let them cycle a few times and see what happens.. If the problem persists,, I'd get a refund and look elsewhere.. It is not imperative to use Panasonic branded batteries in these phones,, in fact there's probably no advantage to doing so.. Any reasonable quality Ni-Mh cell should work fine..
      Do the batteries you bought have a white or black top to them? I'm surprised you had to pay more for the Panasonic ones--I've found that they're usually a bit cheaper than the big battery brands..

    • @nunuviorbiz4772
      @nunuviorbiz4772 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Two different bases (or do you need handset model #?): KX-TG5631, KX-TG5576. The original batteries were on a black back/ends - one with green 'batteries' (like yours in the video) and the other is orange on the black frame. The replacements were both orange on black Three other things. After all these dropped calls with the new batteries, I put back the old ones...and the low battery beeps eventually returned and the sudden drops stopped! (Of course, this is after only a short time - so my plan to replace the batteries is still critical). How do YOU discharge the batteries? I don't have that many people to talk to! The only alternatives to Panasonic brand weren't "big battery brands" just other unknown (to me) aftermarket makers. Of course everyone says theirs are spectacular alternatives.

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      O,, I thought your phones were taking the AAA batteries! For some reason I completely read over the fact that they were the #29 battery packs.. In that case,, my recommendation is this:
      When it comes to the packs,, I would not suggest getting OEM branded ones.. Rather,, go with a reputable branded aftermarket equivalent,, such as Floureon.. They're generally much cheaper and superior in terms of quality and capacity than the originals.. I would return those batteries you got and get a refund.. Then,, purchase Floureon branded equivalent packs.. They're usually only a few dollars on eBay or Amazon..
      I've used them in many different phones,, including the telephone on the left in this video (which takes a very similar battery),, and have always had good results after a few cycles.. As for the discharging,, I usually unplug the telephone line from the base and just let the handset run in Talk mode.. Usually over night will run down the majority of the battery..

    • @nunuviorbiz4772
      @nunuviorbiz4772 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your advice. Sadly, seems I can't get Floureon batteries in Canada. Do you have any opinion on eForCity (Insten), PK Cell or Everydaysource? Possibly could try to arrange to get Floureon sent to a US mailbox etc etc but unsure if this huge effort is worth the hassle. Amazon.com reviews really slag Floureon. Then again, none of them rate too well.

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never heard of any of those brands,, and therefore don't have any comment on them.. I have a feeling the shipping would probably be more than what its worth,, but I'd be willing to set it up for you if you want.. You may want to give one of those brands you listed a try and see if its any good.. It can't be worse than the Panasonic ones.. How much did you end up paying for those?

      This fix is not for the issue where the screen disappears but the phone still works, this is only applicable if the screen goes out and the whole unit reboots..
      You should NEVER place electronics in extreme temperatures like that; condensation can form on the PC board and damage components..

      @@JordanU it just goes to shows that my phone was already having bad components on the LCD ckt. It worked fine only the LCD went out. The low temp test was to check for the capacitors if they are stiil working fine and not the battery. Anyway, my phone's display went out after a few hours after putting it on the fredge and still works.

      I have the same kind of problem. The handset on the small charge unit not the main base answer system unit goes blank when you try to answer a call, then it won`t let you answer it. Then the only way you can get the screen to come back on is placing it back on the charger, of course by then you've missed the call. The phone is a Panasonic and the model is KX-TGA805E and I would guess it`s around 4 or 5yrs old but I would only be guessing.

    After going through all the comments I see that getting new batteries don't work . Throw in the towel. I fixed mine by letting it sit without charging for 24 hours. When I came back the screen was back to the home screen and working properly. If after being off charger for 24 hours and there is no dial tone than the batteries could be bad. But just changing batteries does not work most of the time.
