Yeah, we hit a wall once with an outboard on a bass boat. The river was low and it was lurking just beneath the surface. Check this video of a submerged pylon and some logs we encountered on one of our trips down river in 2023. The pylon was just south of the Haddam swing bridge. th-cam.com/video/N3kKysDwFnE/w-d-xo.html
The ct river was overloaded last season. Due to all the rain we had the river was at much higher levels and loaded with floating debris. We went up the river a few times and my wife sat on the bow watching for debris. A personally know a few people that had some rough bumps on the river ladt season. That boat had to be hauling a$$ to tear out the running gear. Back it down go easy, boating is a very Very interactive activity. Hopefully next season is better.
We hear boats on the CT river doing highway speeds all the time during the summer. Given the number of trees I've seen floating in the river, I'm not surprised at this result.
I hear they're really well made but don't know much about them other than that. I was familiar with the older ski boats they made in the 80s & 90s, but no one really buys those anymore. I think the newer/bigger style are good in rougher conditions compared to the old ones.

Hi, for Christmas my brother gave me a set of Boat plugs to celerate him going fishing & made it back with a boat full of water, we cleaned it night before as a favour, but never told him. Pulled plug to drain cleaning water.
Whoops! At first he probably appreciated you washing the boat but maybe not so much by the end of the boating trip. If he still boats, I bet he probably doesn't launch it without checking to see if the plugs are in now. In many states, new laws make it illegal to transport a boat with the drain plugs in to stop the spread of invasive species.
More money than experience...not realizing this.... hubris. Thank goodness for good people willing to help a stranger, hopefully they pass it on in multiples.
I was impressed by how easily it pulled that much weight out of the water. That's a heavy boat, and it had a ton (probably several) in it. It drained for over 30 minutes once they pulled it out.
I ran a Century Saber up on a rock jetti..over on the Occoquan river. My prop shaft came all the way out.. I stuck it back in..limited back to the st. Park boat ramp . $1,500 in 1986
Here on the Chesapeake Bay, it's dangerous after big storms. So much tree debris comes down the Susquehanna, lots of water laden logs hanging just below the surface.
It's crazy how much stuff ends up in the river, where it flows into Long Island Sound (here in Connecticut) and ultimately the ocean. Spring is always bad because of snow melt, but it can be bad anytime there's a storm. The video linked here was taken in July or August. A smart boater would know not to go on the river at this time, but all that stuff will ultimately in the ocean where people might not even think about it. Someone in Rhode Island could hit a log that floated all the way down the river from Vermont. th-cam.com/video/BbHJvJnil7k/w-d-xo.html
The river is full of old walls and broken pylons from when it was farmland and oil tankers used it, so it's possible they hit one of those. The river is very murky, and depending on the level, you can't see anything below the surface. Check this video of a pylon that we came across one day. If the water had been a few inches higher, we wouldn't have seen it. th-cam.com/video/_o1z95P_uww/w-d-xo.html
Seen it a couple times, it’s a shallow hull at dry weight and you fill the ballasts and you drop and could easily pick up a dead head or any unseen logs, happens so quick hope everyone is ok
Maybe because a lot of water came out, but it never really looked like it was about to sink. But, that said, I've seen some boats in other videos - the Miami Boat Ramps Channel - for sure and some boats that did something simple like take a huge wave over the bow sank within 5 minutes, so I'd always be cautious and think a boat could sink no matter what...but I'm always nervous like that. Haha.
Partially submerged object will definitely ruin your day in a shaft driven craft if you can’t raise the engine and check your prop after contact- that captain has some good friends indeed!
Yes sir. I've only had bass boat outboards, and the motor has a safety thing where it will pop up if you hit something. We hit a wall once (thankfully going slowly). Engine was fine, but the prop still got bent. Unfortunately, there's no provision with a shaft-driven boat. That's what stinks about the river. There's so much junk hiding under the surface.
Try to avoid it after a especially after a storm. We were out side the mouth of the CT river after a storm and hit a submerged telephone pole or tree in the sounnd. We broke a blade and bent a shaft of a New Hatteras Sports fisherman boat in 1966 and the shaft was stanless steel. We limpted all the way back to the Housatonic River were my brother had to schedul a long haul. We just brought the boat back from Mystic Marina for the winter. That was an expensive repair.
That's the thing - you can hit something in the sound that drifted downriver. Makes me wonder where all that stuff ends up. My brother-in-law ripped the lower end off his engine. He was in 80 feet of water cruising at 35 when whack! No idea what he hit, but he never saw anything. We bent a 4-blade stainless steel prop on a bass boat 20 years ago (certainly not the size that would be on a Hatteras) after hitting something doing barely 5 MPH and it was a couple hundred to fix. I can't imagine how much your repair cost. We too limped back to the ramp because I didn't want the bent prop to cause any lower end damage. It was a very long ride back.
To be fair, they could be experienced. The river is full of hazards that aren't on a chart and can't be seen. We once hit a submerged wall doing 5 MPH. It wasn't shown on a paper or electronic chart, and visibility was less than a foot. When we took it to the dealer, they said, "Oh yeah, that's a pretty known hazard, but no one had told us...
@MarkDHall I get it. But I am a licensed captain and operator. If and when the wind / weather picks up, you need to be safe. When operatoring any boat / vessel with passengers, safety is the only thing you should be worried about. Those waves and conditions were way too rough for that boat. He's not the only one, I've seen experienced operators get in bad situations as well. Take good care, and may God bless you and keep you!!
@@ericeverett6134 Thank you Eric for the reply. I agree that passenger safety should the top priority. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen any of the videos from Haulover Inlet in Miami, but it drives me crazy when you see a boat full of people going out with a bunch of kids in the front and no lifejackets on any of them, be safe out there and God bless too.
If you want to see some great boating videos of people at the docks, watch the "Miami Boat Ramps" videos and any of the videos by "Alfred Montaner" or any of the Haulover videos.
Yup. First thing you learn when you get a full in board is DONT HIT ANYTHING. it’s never just a simple patch repair. Skegs, hanger bearing, shaft, and rudder are very expensive to replace.
Nice! Nautiques are great boats, but they don't seem to get the exposure other brands do. I was a kid in the 80s and grew up skiing behind a "Ski Tique." I thought they were amazing, but by today's standards, they were pretty basic, almost utilitarian. The attention to detail they put into their boats today is amazing. That said, I'd still love to own one of those 80s boats.
The CT river is a shit show. Soo many shallow spots, debris under water, etc etc. we had 3 waverunners and a jetboat and would constantly bottom out or have to shut off and push them across shallow areas. Especially if you’re near the Springfield area where Six Flags is. In the summer you can be in the middle of the river nowhere near shore and it’ll be 12-15 inches deep. And if you go near the bridges there’s huge piles of cement, concrete, blacktop, and other debris that “fell” over during construction lol. Don’t mention the dead fish and raw sewage all over that area too. Have to stay north of the Holyoke dam.
We like the river south of Middletown because you can drive for awhile without having to slow for marinas, and it gets pretty the further south you go, but you're right. There is so much debris in it. We hit a wall once while boating down the center of a side channel near an island. It was several feet deep, then bam! The motor popped up and we glided over a wall about a foot under the water. Thankfully we were going really slow. One time I was driving past the area (it's visible from the road), and the water was really low, and the wall was sticking about a foot out of the water. Check out this video from some of the debris we encountered on one of our 2 trips last year to the river. This was many days after a rain too. th-cam.com/video/N3kKysDwFnE/w-d-xo.html

The planet people told no they come here. Hennings automotive in Iowa. They now make parts for GM and Chrysler. They been Ford for year's. Glad the big 2 decided to work together.
@@lincolnls0416 My son's a mechanic and he almost got a job at a Ford dealer. He said the shop does a ton of work on other brands. I know non-branded shops do that, but I had never heard of a brand name dealer doing it. He said yeah, it's pretty common. I had never heard of that, but your story backs it up.
We were in an old wooden boat skiing when water sloshing in the bilge ripped the transom open the hole width of the boat while accelerating. We made it across the lake with about 2" of deck above water. It looked like a fireboat on parade with the engine throwing water everyware😊
250 thousand dollar new boat.
My 1971 Reinell never had an issue.
They weren't sure what they hit, but it was possibly a submerged wall. I reckon that might do some damage to any boat.
No freekin way thats even close to 250k more like 60-80k.

Man nice boat. Glad you got back in safe
Great job getting it back to shore!
Yes! A huge thank you to the crew that towed them back. It's the law (and just basic, common courtesy to help those in need) to stop and help boaters in distress, but I imagine many would just pass by without stopping.
Lucky, so many don't make it back at all
Soon on Graig’s list no damage low hr 😂😂😂
Freshly washed inside and out.
And that's a nice boat. Glad you got to save it !!!
It's not our boat, but I'm glad they got it to shore and no one was hurt. Unfortunate, that it will need all those repairs, though.
It's called a drain plug lol
We all assume the object was submerged. What if he ramped up over something theres bow damage to indicate it. Just saying its a theory that boat tried being the "general lee".
That's a really good thought. Everyone, including me, was so busy looking at the back, that I don't know if anyone even looked at the front.
Tough river to boat on…. I hit a few times with my old I/o by Portland .
Yeah, we hit a wall once with an outboard on a bass boat. The river was low and it was lurking just beneath the surface.
Check this video of a submerged pylon and some logs we encountered on one of our trips down river in 2023. The pylon was just south of the Haddam swing bridge.

Everyone is in a hurry! I bought the boat to SLOW IT DOWN to begin with ... have a safe season out there.
That's a nice looking boat.
I agree. Some have said those types are ugly, but I find them pretty.
Ouch . Glad they got it out .My wife wants one of these . Its all I hear about when were out in our boat.
I hear they're really well made but don't know much about them other than that. I was familiar with the older ski boats they made in the 80s & 90s, but no one really buys those anymore. I think the newer/bigger style are good in rougher conditions compared to the old ones.
@@MarkDHall yep there like little tug boats for of course for pulling water sports . Very nice pieces of kit . They come with a nice price tags but they are nice .
@@waitemc We've seen them at shows, and they seem very luxurious. I think the inboard style setup is very reliable. A lot fewer parts than with an I/O.
Great team work getting this misfortune ashore…!!
Yeah, I felt bad for them, but they were fortunate to get someone to tow them back.
Glad y’all are safe your going to need new trailer axles 😂
Hi, for Christmas my brother gave me a set of Boat plugs to celerate him going fishing & made it back with a boat full of water, we cleaned it night before as a favour, but never told him. Pulled plug to drain cleaning water.
Whoops! At first he probably appreciated you washing the boat but maybe not so much by the end of the boating trip. If he still boats, I bet he probably doesn't launch it without checking to see if the plugs are in now. In many states, new laws make it illegal to transport a boat with the drain plugs in to stop the spread of invasive species.
Glad they got it out and didn’t pollute.
More money than experience...not realizing this.... hubris. Thank goodness for good people willing to help a stranger, hopefully they pass it on in multiples.
Bet they wouldn't do that at Black point Marina. Fred would be eating good that day
Nice looking boat
Nice submarine dude 😂
Built ford tough!
Park boat ramp
. $1,500 in 1986
Probably today that would be $15,000.
That will set the insurance company back about 40k in repairs😂😂😂
At least .
Crazy you made it out.
Always a bad day when your boat spits the shaft out! Thank god for bilge pumps and charged batteries lol.
And thankful to those who towed them in. Those pumps were going non-stop, even after it was up on the trailer.
Nice boat!!
I'll bet he was going nice and slow and keeping an eye out for hazards.
How about a round of applause for thise bilge pumps though💪💪💪
Seen it a couple times, it’s a shallow hull at dry weight and you fill the ballasts and you drop and could easily pick up a dead head or any unseen logs, happens so quick hope everyone is ok
I’m pretty sure they make these wake boats neutral buoyant now, so if you do forget to put the plug in or hit a submerged object, it still won’t sink
Haha.
Gotta out the drain plugs in fellas 😂😂
Look at the little budget Bayliner pulling in the 100k+ boat. Lol
It's funny because I still see a lot of 16' Bayliner Capris with the 'ole Force 85 chugging along, and they are doing great!
Lucky for the generosity of others.
Thats crazy it had that much water amd didnt go under, well built
Yes, it was crazy how much water was in it. Reminds me of the old Boston Whaler ads that showed a boat cut in half and still floating.
Sheee that had everyone sweating
Yes, glad they made it back okay.
Rookies, gotta love them!! Too bad for their boat!!😮😮
Glad everyone is safe. Shit gets scary quick when this happens. I've been in sinking boats an its not fun. Stay safe 😊
Boat= BREAK OUT ANOTHER THOUSAND.
Haha. Never heard that, but it's awesome...and true!
I hope they had a kid down there with his hand over the shaft packing. 😂
I could sit at the boat dock all day. 😂
If you want to see some great boating videos of people at the docks, watch the "Miami Boat Ramps" videos and any of the videos by "Alfred Montaner" or any of the Haulover videos.

Nice save 👌
Yup. First thing you learn when you get a full in board is DONT HIT ANYTHING. it’s never just a simple patch repair. Skegs, hanger bearing, shaft, and rudder are very expensive to replace.
That ain't a cheap boat. Yikes.
Nope.
that bilge pump was saying "FFS, hurry up!"
It looks like there are multiple outlets on the right side, but no water's coming out. I wonder if they're for the ballast tanks?
Hmmm .. Now HERE'S a valuable driving lesson
Nautique has a clamp on the prop shaft so it stays in the boat if it shears.
Very lucky to get it in
Very lucky to get the help that they got, I hope they bought them dinner or something
I know they were super thankful. Not sure if they did, but probably not something they'd flaunt if they did.
Ya know those Bluegill 🐟 fish be hittin hard these days! Y’all gotta be careful out on the water!
That be a rock! 😮

Nice job !!! Hit something and completely removed the propeller and prop shaft… And bent the rudder. That will be an expensive repair job !!!
looks like Cheshire boat ramp
