Hey awesome update: as for the name of the roll-able broiler pen I came up with "broller(s)" the only concern I have is I did not see a braking system to stop the wind from blowing it away. Nice thought though to let them roam around a bit more, as always looking forward to the next video.
I would call them the "Roller Broiler's" or RB's. Looks like a nice design and a much easier way of moving them around. If the cold wind blowing underneath is an issue for the birds maybe some sort of cloth or plastic strip curtain that hangs from the bottom of the frame to the ground allowing the birds to push their way in and out of the pen. This would reduce the amount of cold wind blowing in and you could tack them up or remove them in warmer weather. By the way, I would suggest you round the corners and the edges off those stainless steal drain gutters you added to the plucking machine. They are very sharp and eventually someone will get cut by them.
great idea to give the chicks more space! When visiting ridgedale it just seemed a bit cramped in those pens. Does the slanted roof help too,? do chicks feel better when the roof is higher? How about if you made a constuction with some thin lattice, like a trellis, fixed alongside the slanted roof, with hinges, that during moving can rest on the roof and when parking, flap out like wings just resting on light poles? It would enlarge a safe pasture area from 12 m2 to 28m2 (that is, if the roofsheets were 4 meters wide and the pens are 3x4).
My interest in permaculture is growing, credit to you. Forgive me if I’m mean or mistaken, when screwing roof sheet place the screws through the rib not the pan as the penetration is less likely to leak, if that’s a concern at all given the circumstances, however I recommend being consistent in all regards ie house roof or broiler pen. I’m looking forward to more of your content. Cheers
Anxious to see how the pen works out! I would worry about the wind a bit and especially the wind getting under it and flipping it. Curious to see if as the chickens age they make the effort to get in and out of the pen. Can't see why it won't work awesome!
Hey Richard! If I understand correctly: in the market gardens you just cut the tops of the old plants and leave the roots? Doesn't that interfere with succeeding plantings? Looking forward to the videos of your trip :)
Jelmar The dying roots in the ground will release their nutrients again and become fertilizer. They will provide organic paths/ canals to let rainwater penetrate into the soil. And the decomposing roots will feed the soil life in between crops... Composting/decomposition process will be going on right where you need it... And you don't disturb the soil, meaning you're not bringing old weed seeds back to the surface and it keeps the fragile deeper soil organisms where they like to be, in stead of grilling them with sunlight at the surface..
Hi Richard, you did mention wind which raises two issues, first is whether the wind might lift the entire coupe or turn it over, and the second is with the plastic sheeting, and the gable roof, there is a significant sail area, and being on wheels, which makes it easy for you to move, will make it easier for the wind as well. And the wind won't look for chicks under a wheel. Looks great otherwise. Certainly easier to move and less deductive to the timber frame being dragged along the ground.
I agree, I have lost a similar pen to wind, but this one has wheels and is higher, so it will be more susceptible. All you would need is to pin down the wheels a bit to keep it from starting to shift.
Good point, needs an anker. You would end up naming it very aptly the chicken charter. Have heard pretty all the modes of transport coming by for a good name. Not yet a plane.
cluckerfunk for your new broiler design :-) someone suggested raising the wheels up and down. We've used trailer jockey wheels for this purpose before, you can get them from machine mart in the UK with pneumatic tyres. The problem is the wheel diameter is small (like a wheelbarrow) so they will roll on grass, but will get caught up in clumps and bumps. But maybe worth checking out...
Like that broiler wagon design. Is the bottom rail clearance necessary to be that high? If there were a vertical piece of wood from the top frame rail to the bottom frame rail on the inside, then the wheel could be mounted so that the bottom rail of the frame would be lower than the center of the wheel. If the outer frame had a top rail and a bottom rail to match the inner frame then the outer side of the wheel axel could also have a vertical piece of wood to attach to. The verticals could have several holes make the frame height adjustable if that be desired. Still, looks to be a significant labor saver.
Here’s my two cents on the „Broiler Spoiler“ pen on wheels. I would make the wheels move up and down. In this manner the pen would rest on the ground when the wheels are up making it more secure during the night when they are most vulnerable to predators. During the day a simple lever raises the wheels up for moving the pen and to give them access to the fenced areas. Any good carpenter could make this modification. Don’t forget to add some brakes for windy days and steep slopes! Cheers from Permadave in Italy
This could be accomplished without wheels using the traditional joel salatin style setup By adding 4 spacers/ empty buckets under each corner. At night you remove the buckets and in the morning you put buckets on top, move the cart normally, and then place a bucket under each corner.
Broiler Express - Chickracers - MVP's (most valued players - Movable Chicken Pens) and maybe add cross-bar right in front of wheels as sweepers & provide some perching space of the wet grass ?
have you thought about add rain gutters to harvest rain water? the collection barrel will have to be separate from the Hen-ton due to weight issues I am thinking of a blue plastic water storage barrel laid on its side with piping to chicken nipple style water cups
poultry pen pull-along the 3P pen This looks like it could work. Our mistake with doing poultry with open shelters was to make the pen too large and the shelters with a flat roof, allowing the chickens to perch on the top. The buzzards enjoyed the buffet we set for them for a few days.
Do you have predator problems with the broilers? I know you've put up fences but foxes and the like take some keeping out round here, so you have the same pressures there?
How about the "Polytractors". That would be a little nod to Joel at Polyface Farm. We all owe him a debt of gratitude for his years of research into pastured broilers. Love the videos and the farm mate. Good luck.
The open style pen for the layers works for you, so why not the broilers. We have fox, mink, weasel, hawk and even feral cats some times. Electric fence wont stop them for ever. I guess that it helps having so many people at the farm. Guard dogs work for some, they raise them along the chicken to bond with them. But that's a lost art here now. I don't want to sound negative, (although i probably do), but this have been tried before, and there is no free lunch. Where there is energy to be gained, given time, something comes and fills that niche.
I suggest "the ridge rider" or "Chickcycle" for a name. It looks awesome! So good to give them more sunlight and more space, I hope it pays dividends to the meat quality!
Great vids, & great work overall! Names for the moveable broiler pen: Broilorry, Chick-a-van/Chook-a-van, Fowl-mula One / Fowl-mula One Car, Pen-Ultimate, or ... Putinlimo or Trumplimo (because on the inside, they’re chicken, & full o' poop)
This seems like a great idea! I've been wondering if the main reason that hybrid meat birds often end up unable to walk is because they aren't forced to from a young age... I look forward to updates on what I think can be another improvement to the value of your produce.
Chick 'n' Roll Pen If you are going to have the fence close to the edge of the roof. Would it be a good idea to have the fence charger mounted on the pen? Might be an additional time saver.
Thanks for such great content! I think the "Chook Umbrella Bike" is a good name since it is so very light and it uses bicycle wheels. Or the "Chook Surrey."
Well another name suggestion for the new chick mobile would be "Roule-ma-poule!" - French for roll my hen! ;) Pronunciation: Rro-o-lle - má - po-o-lle --- hard to translate the prosody. Richard ask your friends in Luxembourg! :)
what about moveable fake trees for more arial protection and more shade also? those could be moved around maybe once a day.. so all the ground gets some chicken love...
I'd suggest to call it a chook-chook. You can hear quite a few things in it. ;-) Good luck with testing it out... I'm looking forward to hearing your opinion. Enjoy your time visiting the old interns. Thx for another great video.
Good Morning. I'm starting to follow your channel and I see that you have quite interesting proposals. I am writing from Venezuela with the help of Mr Google. What measure does that corral and How many chickens per square meter do you use in the pen? In the same way, how many chickens can shepherd in that model of mobile corral? Congratulations for your contribution. Regards...

Less work with a fence to move too?
Is it easy to get in and out of it? Is there a flip up door?
