I was saying months ago that all these generative algorithms were horribly inefficient and needed a team of optimization developers to fix them. Of course, the tech billionaires wanted to keep the black box of the program a "super magical secret that we have no idea how it works™" to remove all accountability and feed a fantasy to the shareholders.
Deepseek had me laughing with all the tech losers throwing temper tantrums. It was significantly cheaper to make, stole data from OpenAI, and was optimized to the point where it could run in my basement on an old computer!
All these companies lied about needing to burn more coal, turning back on nuclear power plants, and wasting absurd amounts of drinking water.
DeepSeek is the GlaDos of generative machine learning. It's still evil, but we can work together, and it runs on a potato.

I see this as a HUGE win against those damn hypercapitalist American corpos. I still have my other issues with AI content creation, but I at least hope Deepseek wins this case and plummets OpenAI and its giant predatory Western allies to the ground!
And after we deal with them, this only leaves us to deal with the "Shadiversity Syndrome" types of users. One less immediate headache to deal with so we can put all our focus on the *other* symptom of this drama. Because sadly people like this would still exist even beyond just the motive of profit.

So diminishing returns from training more advanced models like ChatGPT from scratch still apply while at the same time you can distill any model into cheaper one. That really sounds like race to the bottom when it comes to profitability.
I thought training on synthetic data would be problematic but maybe if it's just 1to1 copy then there is less issues.

On the other hand it means if you do train a model, that it's worthless. Because someone can steal your models data and sell it cheaper.
So either stealing data isn't illegal, so they can't profit off of it.

There is not much difference between watching online videos, playing games and using ai (there is ai on youtube too go figure) But it doesn't matter, because what me and you use as resources is so small, compared to what the corporations use. Working in set design helped me get over all the greenwashing bullshit, noone is advocating for movies without sets... also if you're a good artist i don't think that ai generated slop will crush you, only bring the standards higher, and im saying that as a person that does a lot of different kinds of art. @firelordoregano5632 I'm honestly at a point where I feel like the united states doesn't have a right to criticize china anymore. Literally, everything they have issues with we do too. Cheap infrastructure, trampling people's rights, issues with how we treat the LGBTQ, issues with the healthcare system ( although ours is quite worse), mass surveillance, issues with how they handle peoples, personal information, i could literally go on and on with hundreds of other things, and i'm not even joking.
Don't get me wrong. China has done a lot of things very much worthy of criticism, but when that criticism comes from a country that is essentially making all of the same mistakes, it carries less weight.
Plus, like you said, they are more like us than people realize. Both of us are capitalist economies, the issue is that both our governments far too often put their own interest first ( let's not kid ourselves living in a plutocracy isn't all that better than living under communism). Our only advantage is our ability. To speak out against the government end. Even then, it becomes difficult when you have a cult of personality around a person who can say anything and his followers will believe it.

If anything Deepseek accelerates AI. Anyone and their mom will be able to run AI.
Does it hurt NVIDIA? Not really, if anything it helps them. Means more and more ppl will want their hardware.
Does it hurt big, closed AI companies? Temporarily. Because here's the thing, unless you agree AI is perfect and indistinguishable from humans, then you agree that AI has a LONG way to go. If it has a LONG way to go, then these closed AI companies will use that to justify pouring even more resources at the problem.
And if you think Deepseek trained their model without copyrighted material, well then i dont know what to tell you. If anything while the west is worried having all these conversations about the morality of it and whether the AI uses gender-appropiate language, the Chinese are marching forward without giving a crap about any of that.
