    I first played a demo of this that came on a CU Amiga cover disk, I loved the demo so much I went out and picked up the game from a local computer shop. Fantastic little shooter, kept me occupied for hours :)

    What a ringing endorsement. I must simply purchase one of those Amiga video gaming boxes immediately. >.>

    This was one of my favourite games on the A1200. I remember being blown away to be actually playing an FPS on an Amiga given it's limitations in that department. The fact that it actually ran quite well and was a really good game too just added to it. If Commodore hadn't been so suicidal with their business decisions I would have loved to have seen where the Amiga would have ended up - or at least it in the hands of a competent company.

    Just to clarify, this game doesn't have a traditional save option, but it has 3 episodes (space station, tombs and hell) and it will let you start from an episode once you've reached the first level of it. It saves the progress onto the game disk (or the internal memory on the CD32, I guess). So you don't have to do it all in one go.

    i heard about this game long after i stopped gaming on Amiga, around 1998.

    Great idea playing all these DOOM clones Steve, I admit as much as I LOVED CD32 AMIGA etc, hardware back in the day I did feel I was missing out on the whole DOOM mania lol.

    Used to love playing this with my older brother and my friends. it has a few ripped off sounds from aliens as far as i can tell. and this game is also a lot more fun than a more recent game that has the sounds from aliens.

    Looks quite playable and the narrow window doesn't really make it any worse. Quite like the custom thumbnail too.

    It does seem to run quicker than your stock 1200, so your chip suspicions may be correct.

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nostalgia Nerd What's surprising is, my 1200 is far from stock. It has a 68060 cpu in it.

    • @Nostalgianerd
      @Nostalgianerd 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** That is extremely surprising! A 68060 should wipe the floor with this game, you'd have thought at least!

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's the Akiko chip in the CD32 that makes the difference. It was included specifically to handle these kinds of graphics. So the 060 has the brute force to handle it adequately, but I think a stock 1200 would struggle.

    • @Nostalgianerd
      @Nostalgianerd 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Yes, curious. I wasn't aware of any software which utilised it. Hats off to them if they coded the CD32 version to make use of it.

    Strange resolution but it looks MUCH better than those last two FPS games you just showed. This one looks really smooth in comparison.

    Huh. This feels like what you'd get if you combined _Blake Stone_ and _Ken's Labyrinth._
    … with a bit of _Rise of the Triad_ ("Ludicrous gibs!") chucked in for laughs!

    I actually like it. I do like low res games and the sound effects of them shrieking is great.

  • @newmediadenmark_
    @newmediadenmark_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Doom and Wolfenstein is not using 3D hardware either but the 486 and Pentium are extremely fast. The games runs so smooth that they are almost running too fast. It is the same feeling with an i7 today.

    I really like this game and if you reduce the window, turn off the textures on floor & ceilings (and squint) it runs great.

  • @CholoCPC

    Amazing audio as well. Not just the screams but also like the doors opening etc. Audio was definately an area where the amiga was WAY ahead of the pc. Pc's might have had a native rough/useless "bleeper" audio. I still recall getting my very first (freakishly expensive & had to manually set IRQ/DMA) Soundblaster Card hooked up to real speakers & load Doom. Hearing those Deep base shots & screams seriously made the hair on my neck stand up. At the time of the CD32 most had at least a SB clone tho

    I happen to know you are a couple of years older than me so I am wondering how many more years I need to go before I have the museum you've got. I am a 37 year old N.A. Amiga 500 user so you must know how hard I've got it. :) So many consoles!!

    Much better, the number one mandatory item i.e. being playable was catered for with this one. It does not look that bad really either.
    The others were just trying to convert games and make them as similar to the originals without a thought about how playable they were.

  • @RockyBergen

    Here's a question worthy of a Friday Night Talkie (which I watch every week, btw), how old were you when you started seriously collecting? I am curious about how your collection developed over time. I consider myself to be something of a causal collector but if I take toll of my collection, it's getting rather large.

    I like it too, I like the old FPS games because they are not too dark and its easy to see the enemy! One question! How DO you save games on that CD32? Memory card?

    Gloom on the CD32 is very enjoyable and playable.
    Only problem with it is no save or password. It get's very difficult on later levels forcing you to return to the start again and again and again.

    Hey steve, was this game released on other systems like sega mega drive or something? Because i remember playing something like this as a child.

    The game does look like it runs really smooth, although I can't help but think of random mobile phone recorded video when I see this footage. Then it gets me thinking about the constant ranting Charlie Brooker does about aspect ration. >_

  • @janmansde3dede
    @janmansde3dede 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Internal 32KB (I think) memory, there isn't any slot for a memory card.
    As a owner of a CD32, I can say there sadly isn't a way to save CDTV games.

  • @whatamalike
    @whatamalike 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Personally I prefer to turn the floor and ceiling textures off and enlarge the screen. Sure, it's still pixellated but it runs quite smooth and doesn't look as odd as this mode you're showing which to me reminds me of playing an iPhone game on a TV :P
    But its all subjective, and its good that the game at least provides the option

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      madcapoperator The aspect ratio is definitely odd. Not sure why they did it like that.

  • @wrestletube1

    On this CD32 version it looks like a mobile phone port rather than a CD32 game.

    Best A500 FPS game is Behind the Iron Gates by Black Legend.

    but that plays in a postbox and runs at 4 frames/sec lol. Quite playable though I remember enjoying it.

    Breathless is great, even on an 030/50, but it probably needs an 060. I offered to send you my copy for free some years ago but you didn't respond, "Mr. Benway, England" would probably be enough but I didn't take the risk.
    Gloom. I don't remember if it was Gloom or Gloom Deluxe, but the split-screen multiplayer was fun. It sure as hell was no Doom or Duke 3D on LAN in school computer lab, but fun nonetheless. Again, at least on an 030 board.

    I remember hearing about this game when I had already sold my 1200 and had a PC and Doom.I couldn't accept it was possible for the A1200 to handle something like Doom.
    As I see it, while it definitely is good in its own right and worth playing, I was kind of right. It doesn't even come near the quality of Doom, simply because it just was obsolete in terms of power. This gives me the chance to say once more a big F-OFF to CEO&co of Commodore/Amiga.

  • @pundewhee
    @pundewhee 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    No worries. I'd offer to send it to you again, but unfortunately I've got a new place, some room for my A1200 system, some money and hence a reborn fascination for the actual system, and I never got that game to work on emulators, so I'll keep it :) Sorry!

    No memory card for the CD32. A few games saved to it's internal memory but only a few. Otherwise most right back to the start. IMHO it's one of the consoles biggest flaws.

    OMG this game is soooo ugly :) I love Amiga, but 3d games made for it........boy, so many bad games :) /not talking aboutAB3D2 or Doom and other conversions, which was made later for extra powerded Amigas.../

    This is more immediate than most FPS. I like it because its reeks of Amiga. Couldn't play it properly at the time. I had an A500 so I had to make do with Behind The Iron Gate. :-D It wasn't too bad actually considering its 1MB....... :-D
